North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 446: 340 People from Headquarters

Since headquarters decided to take over the case, Chris and Jimmy felt somewhat relieved. For cases they had never handled, besides the initial excitement, they were actually very cautious step by step, like walking on thin ice.

Especially now that they had discovered the car they were chasing was rigged with a bomb, a single mistake could be fatal. As Jimmy waited in the parking lot for the bomb squad, he was far from calm. He was genuinely scared during those moments, thinking about the disastrous impact if the bomb had been detonated on the streets while they were chasing the car. Jimmy and Chris might have even been held accountable.

The personnel from the DC headquarters arrived quickly, although initially it was thought they would come by flight. When Chris and Jimmy were notified, headquarters had already arranged a helicopter to bring them over. Covering a distance of over 300 kilometers, they arrived in less than two hours, landing on the helicopter pad atop the Federal Square building.

Chris and Jimmy went to the rooftop and shook hands with the agents from headquarters, then invited them to the conference room.

Chris, "Thank you for coming to assist. I am Chris from the Homicide section, this is Jimmy."

"Gordon Glick, this is Scott, Harry, Joey." The leader introduced his team members, and both parties took their seats.

Chris, "Jimmy, go and bring the files and evidence." Jimmy nodded and left the conference room.

Chris said to Gordon, "Sorry, there is no suitable office available at the moment, so we will have to trouble you to stay in the conference room."

Gordon, "No problem, how long has this case been ongoing? We didn't receive detailed information before coming, only knew it involved a suspected bomb attack."

Chris, "Let's look at the materials in a moment. Jimmy is in charge of handling the specifics of the case, as you can see, I am temporarily immobile."

Gordon nodded his head. Chris got up and grabbed some bottled water from a cabinet nearby, as Jimmy, along with a few trainee agents, fetched all the collected information to the conference room.

Chris gestured to Jimmy to speak. Without shying away, Jimmy recounted the entire ordeal from the beginning to the car chase and the capture of the driver today. He concluded, "Sorry, we haven't been able to copy the files in advance, so you might need to share one copy temporarily."

Gordon waved his hand, his eyes never leaving the contents of the file.

Jimmy continued, "The driver is currently in the interrogation room. Since his arrest, he hasn't said a word and hasn't asked for a lawyer, so no interrogation has taken place yet."

Gordon nodded, passed the file to his subordinate Scott, "Scott, take a look at the file, and then go to the interrogation with Harry. Joey, you head back to the police parking lot and check a station wagon again."

After delegating tasks to his subordinates, Gordon looked at Chris, "Chris, I need someone to go with Joey, he isn't familiar with the area."

Chris turned to Jimmy, "Jimmy?"

Jimmy nodded, "OK, Joey, follow me."

Jimmy drove Joey to the police parking lot. Joey was in his thirties, Caucasian, with short hair, and looked very capable, just longer than a buzz cut and barely spoke the whole way. Jimmy wasn't much of a talker either, so both of them were mostly silent all the way to the police parking lot.

Next to the station wagon, Jimmy handed Joey an initial report from the forensic department, which included hastily processed inspection photos. Mainly, there were photos of the explosives placed under the car, since the bomb squad had already dismantled the bomb, and now the underside looked nothing like before.

Joey examined the report and photos, circled the car twice while looking, then without minding the dust on the ground, lay down and crawled under the car to begin inspecting.

He was genuinely professional and dedicated, which made Jimmy cringe at the thought of doing the same, fearing for his suit.

"Jimmy, come take a look." Joey called from under the car. Jimmy shrugged helplessly, took off his suit jacket, placed it on the car roof, and then crawled underneath as well.

"See here, it doesn't quite match the photo. Was a fixing iron bar removed during the bomb disposal?" Joey pointed under the car, where a thin streak on the undercarriage was a different color from the surroundings. Compared to the photo, it was clear there was nothing there anymore.

"No, the bomb squad is very reliable. They wouldn't have removed a fixing bar without telling us. There must have been something here originally, which was no longer present after the car was brought in." Jimmy was certain.

"Look at this hole, it's newly drilled, not original. There must have been something attached here from the detonator system you removed. Let's look inside the car." Joey glanced around to confirm the position of the hole, then crawled out from under the car and opened the door to push forward the back seat.

"There are four holes here under the back seat, if they were just for wiring, there would be no need for so many holes. There must have been something else planned for installation here." Joey said with certainty as he examined the space under the back seat.

They continued examining inside the car, including the engine compartment. Finally, Joey took off his gloves, patted the dust off his clothes, "Let's go back."

Jimmy cleaned up as well and they drove back to the FBI office.

The same conference room was now restocked, with three whiteboards placed side by side, covered in the clues they had found so far.
