Jimmy: "Investigate Joey's social relationships, communicate with his widow to find out who Joey typically saw, search the surrounding area for surveillance cameras that might have captured information, and look into cases Joey handled when he was a prosecutor. That's all I can think of for now."
Chris nodded, "You handle this case."
Jimmy closed the dossier and stared at Chris in surprise, "Huh? Why? Is it appropriate for me to take on such an important case?"
Chris: "Why do you think Hughes arranged for me to mentor you? Because I'm about to retire. Alright, you handle this case, and remember to adjust the priority of the investigative route you just mentioned."
Jimmy took a deep breath, exhaled, and nodded, "Got it, I'll first contact the police to cooperate in checking the surrounding surveillance cameras."
Jimmy opened the dossier, found the Detective who had handled the shooting case, and made a phone call. After inquiring, he learned that they had already conducted a round of checks in the vicinity after the shooting, and there were no cameras facing outward on the surrounding buildings. The closest surveillance camera was 200 meters away, which was basically useless for the investigation.
The Detectives at the station weren't just idling away; they also conducted a preliminary investigation after receiving the news before handing over the case to the FBI. So, either Jimmy would have to conduct another round of inquiries himself, or he would have to accept their initial investigation results.
This was Jimmy's first time leading a case in Manhattan, and he certainly didn't want to accept the police's judgment so carelessly.
Jimmy asked Chris to wait here and then went to the houses next door. Unlike the police's inquiries, Jimmy judged for himself whether there were cameras on the exterior or near the entrances of the houses. With the size of today's cameras still being quite large unless they were deliberately hidden, it was unlikely that Jimmy would overlook them.
After nearly an hour, Jimmy made his rounds and then returned, indeed finding two hidden cameras. However, due to the angle, the cameras could only see their respective doorways and couldn't capture the street outside.
Back outside Joey's villa, Jimmy stood by the road contemplating the murderer's route. Based on the result of Joey being shot after opening the door, the murderer must have knocked or rang the doorbell at the front door. Fingerprint checks on the doorbell had already been carried out during the earlier investigation, and the fingerprints retrieved were a mess, indicating that many people had pressed it, making accurate extraction impossible.
So what could have been the murderer's route before ringing the doorbell?
Jimmy looked towards both sides of the public road at the entrance. It was definitely unrealistic to approach on foot. There would be no obvious traces left on the paved road by motorcycles or cars, and with the two-way traffic, it was impractical to retrieve vehicle information from both the left and right intersections.
In the end, the key to solving the case still depended on exploring Joey's social relationships and past cases.
Jimmy found Chris: "Chris, I'd like to talk to Joey's widow first."
Chris nodded; Mrs. Taylor was staying with nearby friends for the time being. Both men drove over, and Jimmy walked ahead and knocked on the door. An elderly woman came to open it.
Jimmy flashed his badge, "Hello, I'm Special Agent Jimmy Yang from the FBI, and this is Special Agent Chris Walker. We've come to see Mrs. Taylor."
"Please come in, I'll call her."
Jimmy and Chris sat down on the couch in the living room, and shortly after, an elderly woman came down from upstairs.
Jimmy: "Hello, Mrs. Taylor, I am Special Agent Jimmy Yang from the FBI. I'm handling the case of Prosecutor Joey's demise. Please accept my condolences."
Mrs. Taylor shook hands with Jimmy, "Thank you, please sit," and then she sat down on an armchair next to them.
Mrs. Taylor: "Do you have any questions for me?"
Jimmy nodded, "Mrs. Taylor, I'd like to know if Joey had any disputes with anyone recently? Or was there anything unusual in his life?"
Mrs. Taylor shook her head, "Joey and I used to live in Upper West Side, New York, and after he retired, we moved to Great Neck. We've lived here for several years, only spending a few months in Orlando, Florida, during the winter each year.
Joey didn't have any special activities, only occasionally returning to Manhattan to meet with a few old friends. He also didn't have any anomalies recently. I left home in the morning to participate in a community club activity and found out when I returned in the afternoon... Joey was a good man, I really can't imagine who would be so heartless as to shoot an elderly man."
Mrs. Taylor's voice choked as she spoke, and Jimmy picked a tissue from the coffee table and handed it to Mrs. Taylor. She took one and wiped her eyes, "Thank you. I really can't think of anyone he would have had a conflict with or who would do such a thing."
Jimmy: "Please accept my condolences, Mrs. Taylor. We'll take care of this case. Here's my business card, if you remember any clues, please contact me in a timely manner."
Jimmy could say he came up empty-handed, as he followed Chris out of the villa, he said while walking towards the car, "Chris, do you think she lied?"
Chris: "Can't tell for now."
Jimmy: "I want to look into the cases Joey handled before, what's the procedure for that?"
Chris: "Just go and apply with the Prosecutor's office directly, let's go, I'll handle it for you this time."
Jimmy nodded and the two got into the car and headed back to Manhattan.
The next day, after Jimmy met up with Chris, they went straight to the Federation Prosecutor's Office. Chris had already made contact the day before, so their visit today went smoothly, and they only had to wait a few minutes before meeting Prosecutor Richard Dadario.
Chris: "Mr. Dadario, we're here this time hoping to have a look at the cases formerly handled by the late Federation Prosecutor Mr. Joey Taylor, to see if we can find any clues."
Richard shook his head: "Case files can't be shown to you directly. Tell me what you need, and I'll arrange someone to compile it and give it to you."
Chris frowned and nodded, then turned to Jimmy: "You tell him."
Jimmy: "Mr. Dadario, I'm Detective Jimmy Yang."
Richard: "Yes, I know you. Are you taking charge this time?"
Jimmy shook his head: "The case is still led by Chris, but he hopes I can gain more experience, hope you don't mind."
Richard: "Go ahead."
Jimmy: "I hope you can prioritize checking the cases involving the mob, drugs, guns, and murder, and if possible, to investigate whether they have military service experience."
Richard: "Your reason."
Jimmy: "This time it's a shooting, a shot to the head, clean and neat. Such a person is definitely not a novice. For such a marksman, if he is a criminal who had cases dealt by Prosecutor Joey previously, he must be a main figure in the case, and at the same time, have very good psychological quality.
He left after shooting Joey, and no one around noticed anything unusual. My guess is that mob shooters, drug dealers, those with military experience are the most likely, followed by serial killers with somewhat problematic psychologies."
Richard nodded without speaking, and Chris said from the side, "Jimmy, you go out and wait for me."
Jimmy stood up, buttoned his coat, and turned to leave the Prosecutor's office. Since Chris sent him out, he must have something to discuss privately with Richard. It seems that he did make some mistakes earlier, and now Chris had to clean up after him.
It was Jimmy's first interaction with the Federation Prosecutor, and only the second time he had seen Prosecutor Richard, with hardly any experience.
A few minutes later, Chris came out of the office, "Let's go, we'll head back to the station."
The next day, Chris signed for a package delivered from the Federation Prosecutor's Office to the station, which contained a thick stack of extracted documents. It seemed the Federation Prosecutor's Office had done quite a bit of overtime yesterday.
Chris: "Jimmy, you start with these files. Note, this is only a part, not all of it, they're still organizing."
