Jimmy was once again put on leave, Hughes said to wait for notification, estimating it wouldn't be a quick fix, so after going home, Jimmy immediately changed his clothes and headed out.
However, he hadn't gone far when he received a call to report to Dr. Mary for a five-day psychological adjustment.
Jimmy was speechless. The FBI really did have ample funding. They knew he had no issues, yet he still had to report to Mary, whose fees were certainly not cheap.
The five-day psychological adjustment plus the weekend equated to just over a week's leave, which was fine—after all, it wasn't costing him anything, and administrative leave was paid. In any case, he wasn't at a loss.
Jimmy first contacted Dr. Mary to confirm the time, then headed straight to Chinatown. Relying on his Chinese appearance, he asked several elders and found an old tea shop.
Although it was his first time buying tea leaves and he didn't know much, he could still inquire with the shopkeeper. After all, more expensive tea must be better than cheaper ones, right? He also consulted about some tea brewing techniques.
Jimmy had lunch at a teahouse and, after resting in the afternoon, went straight to Mary's studio.
Jimmy and Mary sat on the couch, with Jimmy brewing the tea himself—Zhengshan Xiaozhong, not in large quantities since he didn't know if Mary liked it, so he only brought a small box.
Following the tea shop owner's introduction, Jimmy's first attempt at brewing tea was passable, though he couldn't expect it to be great, of course.
After washing the tea, the first brew was quickly poured into the fairness pitcher after being infused with boiling water for only a few seconds. He poured Mary a cup, "The taste is quite good. It seems that even if you're not exposed to it from a young age, you can still pick up the skill of tea brewing quite quickly, much better than my first attempt."
Mary put down the cup, her assessment was that it was quite good. Jimmy also poured himself a cup. With no deep understanding of the tea, he could only say that the taste was nice and acceptable. This was definitely not related to his own technique—the tea was just good to begin with.
Mary looked at Jimmy and asked, "What have you done again? Hughes called me to arrange another psychological adjustment for you?"
Jimmy, "You know Ruiz, right? I was on a task with Ruiz, just had a fight, no big deal, except for Ruiz being unlucky and getting shot."
Mary, "Oh? How many this time?"
Jimmy, "Not many, three or four I guess. You know, I don't really care about them."
Jimmy often treated Heart Eye as an aid, and when it came to gun battles, his maneuvers felt more like playing an FPS game, like CS or Half-Life. Perhaps it was pressure in the beginning, but as the frequency increased, he felt increasingly adept.
Mary, "Hmm, what do you think?"
Jimmy, "I don't have any particular thoughts. Given the situation at the time, if I hesitated, you might have been informed that I was already KIA today. An agent's life is full of surprises, and no one can be sure of always being lucky."
Mary, "You haven't completed your probationary period, have you?"
Jimmy, "Yeah, still two months to go, but it shouldn't be a problem. I don't think Hughes would prevent me from becoming permanent. It's not easy to find such a good employee like me."
The two chatted idly and drank tea when suddenly there was a knock at the door. Jimmy was surprised; it was uncommon for a psychiatrist to have someone knocking during a session as it could seriously affect a client's mental state.
Mary and Jimmy turned to look, and sure enough, it was an acquaintance. Jenna walked in carrying several paper bags, seemingly back from shopping.
When Jenna saw Jimmy, she placed her bags next to Mary's desk and said, "Oh, lucky guy, what are you doing here?"
Jimmy, "Good afternoon, Jenna."
Jenna joined them in the seating area, and Mary grabbed a cup from the side, pouring some tea for her.
After taking a sip Jenna said, "You changed the tea leaves, huh?"
Mary, "Jimmy brought them over."
Jenna, "Hmm, not bad. What were you two talking about?"
Jimmy, "Just casual conversation. I'm off work so thought I'd come here for tea."
Jenna frowned at Jimmy, "Are you FBI folks always this free?"
Jimmy shrugged, "I guess I'm an exception—more holidays than most."
Jenna, "Fine, what are your plans for your time off?"
Jimmy, "Haven't thought much about it, the leave came quite suddenly. Maybe I'll do a big shopping trip. How about you?"
Jenna, "We're not as free as you, obviously we'll be working."
Jimmy, "Okay, looks like I'm the only one loafing about. Guess I'll hit the shops then. You two chat, Mary, I'm heading out."
After speaking, Jimmy stood up, adjusted his clothes, grabbed his denim hat from the side, and prepared to leave, with Mary and Jenna standing to see him out.
The reason Jimmy left so abruptly was that he had noticed something peculiar earlier. Mary had a ring on her finger which Jimmy had spotted while they were chatting, but he didn't think much of it. It was only when Jenna came and sat next to Mary that he realized something was off—they both had rings of the same style, which was too obvious. Better to leave early than to be a third wheel.
He had already sensed something was amiss when he attended their dinner before, but it wasn't too obvious back then. Today's scenario, however, had pretty much confirmed his suspicions.
The broker was efficient, quickly offering several properties, and provided another very promising two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment. Due to certain circumstances, the property was about to be reclaimed by the bank and hadn't yet entered the process.
