It was odd, the silk thread in the box had clearly dissipated during the daytime, so how had it reappeared?
Jimmy packed up his documents, greeted Hayden, and left the police station, got into his car, and drove toward the dirt road in Northern Town.
This kind of silk thread shouldn't pose any danger. The two campers hadn't had any incidents before, and according to the satellite photos, the anomaly had persisted for a while. If something were to happen, it wouldn't have waited just for this night.
Jimmy's target was the mist, originating from the Red River. If the mist was targeting the box, and it being nighttime, the mist should have moved by now.
Jimmy had just left town and hadn't gone far when he suddenly stopped the car. The mist was floating ahead but was no longer advancing toward the town. Now, the mist was only a few meters away from Jimmy, yet, even this close, both remained undisturbed; Jimmy stared at the mist, dumbfounded.
It wasn't that the mist wasn't advancing, but rather that it had reached its distance limit. It seemed the "thing" in the Red River didn't have unlimited power. The box was its target, but because the distance was too far, beyond its capacity, the mist could advance no further.
Jimmy turned the car around, drove directly to the roadside farmland, and hadn't driven far sideways when the position of the mist shifted. Jimmy's expression changed, he circled around the mist. Before he could fully determine the scope of the mist's edge, it suddenly retracted rapidly to the north and quickly vanished from Jimmy's sight.
Jimmy waited a long time at the same spot, but the mist didn't reappear. It was a new phenomenon; today was lucky to have come out and seen it. He turned the car back onto the road and drove back to the motel.
The next morning, after the sun came up, Jimmy left the motel, had breakfast, and went to the police station to check on Chad's preparation of the diving gear.
Yet, that day Chad came very late. Jimmy had waited in the police station for over two hours, and it was past 10 AM when Chad finally arrived, and not alone.
Jimmy stood up, "Supervisor Lambert, what brings you here?"
Indeed, following Chad into the police station was Lambert, the supervisor from the FBI Dallas Office, accompanied by another agent, previously involved in the armored car heist case, Special Agent Sam Burton.
Lambert, "Well, I came to see how your case is progressing. How is it? Any conclusions?"
Jimmy, "I have some ideas, but no final conclusions yet."
Lambert, "No problem, tell me about any leads you might have found."
Jimmy fell silent for a moment. Strictly speaking, since he realized it was a paranormal event, he hadn't thought about how to report this case. His entire focus had shifted from the case itself to the paranormal event.
All his investigative details were based on the paranormal activity, including aerial and satellite photography.
Lambert, "Why arrange for diving gear?"
Jimmy, "I thought of looking in the Red River to see if there are any clues."
Lambert, "So, you suspect they drowned, and since the bodies weren't found, they're reported missing, right?"
Jimmy shook his head, looked at the people around him, and eventually decided to share the current progress with Lambert, but definitely not in front of everyone.
Jimmy looked at Chad, "Sheriff Chad, is there a quiet room here somewhere?"
Chad glanced at Lambert, then turned to Jimmy and nodded, "Second floor."
Jimmy, "Supervisor Lambert, let's go talk over there, just the two of us."
Chad led them to an office on the second floor. It was an empty office, and next door was the evidence room. There was no one else around.
Lambert watched Chad close the door. The sound of footsteps gradually moved away, and it seemed there was no one else around.
Jimmy looked around to make sure no one was there. He then asked Lambert, "Supervisor Lambert, this case is very troublesome. I don't think I can write a complete case report. Based on my current investigation, these disappearances don't seem to be the work of humans."
Lambert said, "You're saying it's not the work of humans, right? What's the reason?"
Jimmy replied, "Before I joined the FBI, I participated in church exorcism ceremonies." After saying this, Lambert's eyes suddenly narrowed. Jimmy kept watching Lambert, and this expression told Lambert that he knew something.
Jimmy continued, "I can see some special things, non-human things. Since I arrived in Tata Town, I haven't slept well in these three or four days. Every night, I'm woken up by a feeling of palpitations. There's something strange to the north of Tata Town."
Jimmy took out some photographs from his briefcase. "These are the aerial photographs I applied for two days ago. Look here. I've marked the boundary. The plants to the north of Tata Town have a noticeable color difference. Even the same type of plant looks different on either side of this line. I've found their center point here, at a bend in the Red River."
Then he took out satellite photos that had been delivered yesterday: "These are satellite photos from July this year. Although it's not very clear, look at this forest. It's the forest where the fourth disappearance took place. There's a significant difference in the color of the trees."
Jimmy showed Lambert his analysis of the photos over the past two days. Lambert remained silent, looking at the photos together with Jimmy.
Lambert asked, "Is there more?"
Jimmy replied, "Yesterday, I dug up a box in this forest. Inside it was a skull and some other items. They are waiting for Sheriff Chad and his team to conduct an examination. The box is quite old and unrelated to our missing persons cases, so I didn't take it over."
Lambert said, "Hmm, I think I understand. Now, explain why you suddenly fired into the air yesterday?"
Lambert saw that Jimmy didn't speak and continued, "I came today not really for the case, but because of you. What exactly happened that made you shoot wildly like a madman?"
Jimmy said, "I saw things they couldn't see."
Lambert looked at Jimmy, put his arm around Jimmy's shoulder, and leaned his head close to Jimmy's ear, "Are you sure you saw things they couldn't see? Are you perhaps not feeling well, needing a trip to the hospital?"
Jimmy gently shook his head: "I'm very normal, I'm certain, sir."
Lambert released Jimmy, "OK, I understand now."
Lambert took out his phone, looked up a number, and made a call, "Priest Horton, this is Lambert."
"Yes, we might need you to bring someone to Tata Town, the one by the state border."
"Of course, if you could arrive as soon as possible, that would be best. Thank you very much."
Lambert hung up the phone and said to Jimmy, "I believe you. I hope you won't disappoint me. Let's go, and wait for the others to join us."
Jimmy packed up the photos on the desk, put them in his briefcase, and joined Lambert in going downstairs. Special Agent Sam Burton was sitting at Jimmy's previous spot, resting with his eyes closed. Being dragged here early in the morning by Lambert wasn't exactly pleasant, and being the driver on top of that was quite tiring.
When Sam saw Lambert and his group coming down, he stood up. Lambert waved him off, and they sat in the waiting area of the lobby, waiting for Priest Horton to arrive.
