In the afternoon, Jimmy drove to the lake north of Tata Town. Since it was a fairly well-known camping site, the surrounding roads had been basically paved—although still dirt roads, at least they were drivable.
According to the case records, the previous three missing cases all had specific locations. Jimmy came here to inspect the sites of these three cases. He walked along the positions of these cases and also observed the surrounding environment.
Since a long time had passed since these three cases, there were no traces left of the incidents as they had originally occurred. The only way to pinpoint the exact locations was by using the photos taken at the time that were in the files.
Jimmy also activated Heart Eye Observation. The visible locations had surely been checked by Chad and his team countless times. Compared to Chad and his team, Jimmy's advantage was Heart Eye; he could see places the naked eye couldn't.
However, there was nothing of note discovered underground—it was pitch black, indicating there weren't any unseen spaces or the like. But the area was vast, and if Jimmy wanted to cover it all, it would take a significant amount of time.
Having spent quite some time examining the vicinity of the first case without finding anything, Jimmy went straight back to the motel. The case wasn't something that could be rushed in a day nor could it be solved in one. It wasn't bad to head back early to rest and preserve energy to continue checking other locations tomorrow.
Back at the motel, Jimmy gathered everything in the car, packed it into his bag, and brought it into his room. It was definitely not safe to leave things in the car, and he couldn't expect the security to be particularly good here.
After resting for a while, Jimmy's phone suddenly rang. Glancing at it, he saw it was a call from Dr. Mary Walter in New York. He pressed the answer button.
Jimmy, "Hi, Dr. Mary."
Mary, "Jimmy, are you still in Dallas?"
Jimmy, "Yeah, I haven't finished the detachment here."
Mary, "It's been over a month, does a detachment take that long?"
Jimmy, "I don't know why, either. I'll contact Hughes after the case ends. By the way, do you need something?"
Mary, "Nothing really, just thought I'd ask."
Jimmy and Mary exchanged a few words and then hung up. Looking at his phone, Jimmy suddenly felt like something good was about to happen.
As Jimmy was lost in his thoughts, the phone rang again. Without looking at the caller ID, he answered directly.
Jimmy, "Did you forget to say something?"
Jones, "Uh, is it a bad time that I'm calling?"
Upon hearing the male voice on the phone, Jimmy looked at the phone: "Ah, Jones, it's you. What's up?"
Jones, "Actually, yes. You asked me to keep an eye on your apartment, but did you forget something?"
Jimmy thought for a moment: "I can't think of anything. I just asked you to check for any unexpected problems after work. There shouldn't be anything I forgot."
Jones was speechless, "You've been gone too long. Did you forget about paying the rent?"
Jimmy, "Ah, I really did forget. Now that you mention it, I've been out for over a month. How did the apartment manager find you?"
Jones, "He knows we're friends, so he came to ask why you weren't around."
Jimmy, "Why didn't he call me? Weird, I completely forgot about paying rent."
Jones, "You expect him to call you? The phone number you left with the apartment manager had two wrong digits! If he didn't know we were acquainted and hadn't come to me, your stuff would've been packed up and thrown out ages ago. How could you mess up your own number?"
Jimmy laughed awkwardly, "Calm down, it was a mistake. I'm still on detachment at the Dallas office for a while; can you cover the rent for me? It's a big help."
Jones, "When are you coming back?"
Jimmy, "Not sure yet. I'm investigating a case right now. I'll ask Hughes later."
Jones, "Alright, I'll take care of the apartment situation for you. That's it, then. Goodbye."
Jimmy, "Goodbye."
After hanging up, Jimmy patted his forehead. Being away from New York, he hadn't realized that his apartment rent had been overdue for so long. Thankfully, it was very wise of him to have rented an apartment in the same building as Jones.
With Jones' help, it saved him a lot of trouble. Not to mention, he had an FBI-issued Glock stored in his room.
When he came to look for Roland on vacation, he only carried his revolver with him. Upon learning of his detachment to Dallas, he had notified Jones to take and safeguard the pistol. If he had lost that gun, the trouble would have been immense.
Still, there was a problem. Jimmy had cleared out the Stone City warehouse before and sent some stuff to New York, which remained in his apartment. There were too many things happening, and he hadn't found a secure place to store them.
He had planned on buying a house, and with it, he could get a bigger safe to secure many of his belongings. However, the current detachment disrupted his plans, and he had postponed calls from the real estate agent twice using the excuse of not being in New York at the moment. He wondered if the agent would continue to help him find a house upon his return to New York.
Sitting on the bed, leaning against the headboard while watching TV and lost in thought, Jimmy felt his current life was a bit chaotic, not at all like the thrill he had when working as a 'salary thief' at the county police. Instead, he faced various problems and immense pressure, wondering when he might be able to relax again.
Checking the time, Jimmy got up to ensure all doors and windows were closed and locked, then he turned off the TV and lights, and went to bed early.
