North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 322: Are you ever going to stop?

Jimmy successfully returned to Dallas. The car provided by Ray had been occupied by Jimmy before heading to Little Rock; it was parked at the Dallas airport for a week. Fortunately, Jimmy no longer minded the parking fee and left the airport smoothly after paying, heading back to the FBI office.

He didn't go directly to the hotel, but to the office instead, mainly to give Lambert a heads up. Before he sneaked off to Little Rock without notice, Lambert had later coordinated with Pete from the Little Rock office to provide resources for Harten. This favor was acknowledged, and now that he was back, he certainly needed to report in as soon as possible.

Jimmy knocked on Lambert's door, "Come in."

Jimmy: "Director Lambert, I'm back."

Lambert looked up, "Sit, wait for me for 1 minute." He continued to go through some documents, signed them, and then placed them back on the pile of papers next to him. Looking at Jimmy, he said, "Tell me about your trip to Little Rock."

Jimmy: "Sure, Director Lambert. As you know, before I joined the FBI, I was a police officer in Arkansas, Plaskey County. James was our chief, and he took great care of me, you could even say he gave me a second chance at life.

Some time ago, when I was on vacation, James got shot. My intention was just to see him, but after communicating with former local colleagues, it was clear that the shooting wasn't random but targeted at James.

So, I started an investigation with the county police and friends from the local FBI. Then there was an accident. When I went to the hospital to take over the duty from the county police, I encountered the gunman. After a shootout, the gunman committed suicide, the case was closed, and I returned."

Lambert: "Is that all?"

Jimmy: "Yeah, nothing special, just a gunman. Although we didn't get a confession since he killed himself, we had to close the case. The rest of the investigation will be handled locally, and I didn't interfere any further."

Lambert: "Well done, I like your style. You've been busy for a week. Go and get some rest, I'll give you one more day off. Come back to work the day after tomorrow."

Jimmy got up and left Lambert's office since there weren't many acquaintances around. He went downstairs, drove to the nearby hotel, and wondered why Lambert hadn't specified how long the assignment would be and why he was still staying at a hotel without considering the cost.

Back at the hotel, Jimmy changed and washed up, then went out to take care of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He had gotten up late that morning and, after dealing with follow-ups in Little Rock, it was already afternoon by the time he arrived in Dallas. Although it was still a bit early for dinner, he couldn't worry about that. He hadn't eaten anything substantial all day, save some snacks at the airport.

After taking care of his work, Lambert thought about Jimmy's case, checked the time, and then decided to call Pete, the supervisor in Little Rock.

Lambert: "Thanks, Pete."

Pete: "No worries, he's a good lad. You have a good eye."

Lambert: "Hahaha, I can't take the credit for discovering him. Remember Hughes from Manhattan? He's Hughes' man. He just wanted me to keep an eye on him for a bit. I didn't expect such a reward. What do you think?"

Pete: "He's very sharp, discovered clues others overlooked, and arrested five suspects. His capabilities demonstrated in this case were quite impressive, definitely worth developing."

Lambert: "That's good to hear. I guess I owe Hughes one now. By the way, once the case is over, why don't you come to Dallas? We could go hunting on the ranch."

Pete: "Of course, let's set up a time later."

Lambert: "OK, goodbye."

After Lambert hung up, he started to ponder what to do with Jimmy. It seemed a shame to send him back right away, but holding on to him for several weeks didn't seem right either. That crafty old man Hughes, why didn't he just call himself?

While Lambert considered his options, Jimmy had already had his meals and returned to the hotel to rest. He didn't feel like going out today; after a busy week, he needed some time to reflect and recap.

Come to think of it, aside from discovering that surveillance vehicle, Jimmy hadn't really contributed any special insights to the investigation. He had mainly been running around to confirm intelligence results.

He had been lucky this time, just as Tom provided CIA intelligence. Otherwise, with someone like William, who had undergone counter-interrogation training, extracting useful information wouldn't have been a quick task.

However, there seemed a bit of a problem on Justin's end. It was uncertain how things would unfold in the future. Jimmy actually liked Justin, but it was a shame; in this case, they had completely different perspectives. There was bound to be disappointment on one side or the other.

The gunman, Jimmy had misjudged him. That 2-meter-tall doctor, Jimmy had seen him while scouting the floor, but he mistook him for a fitness enthusiast rather than suspecting that someone with such an obvious feature could be an assassin.

The gunman's suicide also left Jimmy with an issue: without confirming his identity, there was no way to take down the Organization behind him. If they continued to pursue James, it would be up to Tom to handle it.

Then came the biggest revelation; Jimmy finally understood the background of his current identity. Quite the high-profile figure, a CIA regional director, that's a coveted position within the CIA. Even though Jimmy didn't have access to specific CIA documents, he knew about the different domestic agencies from the FBI Academy. Add to that his own CIA ID card, so he paid particular attention to it at the time.
