North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 319: 286 gunmen arrested

The gunman didn't continue running after turning the corner; he slowed down, stopped, and then turned to prepare an ambush for Jimmy behind the corner.

Unfortunately for him, tactics that would work on an ordinary person were ineffective against Jimmy, whose clairvoyant ability had already seen the gunman's move. Jimmy didn't slow down much, and his heavy footsteps steadily approached the corner.

After estimating Jimmy's location, the gunman raised his hand to aim at the corner, waiting for Jimmy to come running by. Jimmy didn't disappoint him; when he got close to the corner, he immediately stopped his run and began to move quietly towards the corner. His revolver was continuously aimed at the position, ready to fire the moment the gunman showed himself.

When Jimmy stopped, the gunman realized something was wrong; the other man was as cunning as they come, not daring to come around the corner, which was very unfavorable for the standoff.

He didn't turn and run but instead aimed at the corner while slowly moving backward. After moving several meters away from the corner, he turned and started to run, while Jimmy had been watching his every move. As the gunman turned, Jimmy had already passed the corner and fired at the gunman.

Knowing the gunman was part of the CIA's operation team, Jimmy had no intention of holding back too much; staying alive was all that mattered, however brief that might be.

Shooting the gunman in the head or neck from behind would indeed be too excessive and suggest clear intent, so Jimmy fired the remaining two bullets in his gun, one hitting the back and the other the thigh, both from behind.

The gunman never expected Jimmy to be aware of his every move. He had relaxed a bit when he turned to flee. The shock of being shot made him fall forward, then start to writhe and scream on the ground.

Jimmy didn't linger at the corner; after firing, he immediately withdrew. If the gunman managed to shoot from a prone position sideways, Jimmy, standing at the corner, could easily be hit. For safety, it was better to hide.

He took six bullets from his holster to reload. By now, the gunman was violently twisting on the ground, hit by the three shots that broke the camel's back; he had no chance of running anymore.

"FBI, drop your weapon, hands in the air," Jimmy called out after reloading, without showing himself but from behind the corner.

The sound of sirens was getting closer; the noise from Jimmy's revolver was quite loud, guiding them. Before Jimmy had the chance to apprehend the gunman, a police car had already reached the intersection.

"LRPD, drop your weapon, drop your weapon," a police officer called out without getting out of the car, sticking his hand out of the driver's side window and aiming a gun at Jimmy.

Jimmy pulled out his FBI badge that he had previously hung inside his clothing with his left hand, "FBI, the gunman is ahead, be careful."

The LRPD patrol car carried two officers. The one in the passenger seat got out and aimed a gun at Jimmy, while the driver then exited the car, aiming as he approached Jimmy. He took a look at the badge and then peered around the corner.

"Bang," the gunman suddenly lifted his gun to his head and fired a shot; seeing no chance of escape, he chose to commit suicide.

"Fxxk!" Upon hearing the gunshot, Jimmy also turned to look, seeing that the gunman was now completely still. Since it was night and the streetlights were dim, Jimmy didn't see any blood. But based on the sound of the shot and the gunman's current state, he could guess what had happened.

The LRPD officers were not rash, but after shouting twice around the corner and seeing no movement from the gunman, they stepped out from the corner and slowly approached the gunman on the ground, only to confirm that he had already committed suicide.

"%¥&¥... %¥," Jimmy followed the LRPD, looked at the corpse on the ground, and a string of curses came out.

If the gunman had been alive, many things would have been easier to handle, whether it was to convict him directly or to trace the people behind him, there were multiple options to choose from. Now that he had committed suicide, it directly extinguished the plans Jimmy had for what was to come.

The LRPD called an ambulance, and Jimmy also called Cage and Harten, informing them that the gunman had committed suicide, and then hung up the phone without discussing too much because it was not safe to talk on the phone.

When the ambulance arrived, the gunman's body was taken away for the coroner to perform an autopsy. Jimmy registered with the LRPD and went back to the Church Hospital, where Detective Cherry was still in a coma.

The LRPD squad car took Jimmy back to the hospital. Jimmy took the elevator to James's ward floor, which was already in chaos. The gunshot earlier fired by Jimmy was too loud, directly alarming the surrounding patients and caregivers. They called the police and hospital security and nurses. After finding out that the shooter had left, the security staff began searching the area and found Detective Cherry who was unconscious.

Cherry had been revived, fortunately, the gunman had not attempt to harm innocent people, and had only pressed on Cherry's carotid artery to make him pass out.

Letting Cherry rest in an empty ward nearby, Jimmy entered James's ward, where Mrs. Baldwin had already woken up. Having been taking care of her husband these past few days, she had been sleeping in a small guest room inside the ward. The gunshot had startled her awake, and she had been guarding by James's bedside until she stood up when she saw Jimmy come in.

Mrs. Baldwin, "Jimmy, what happened?"

Jimmy, "It's all taken care of, Mrs. Baldwin. A gunman came to assassinate James; I chased him out. Seeing no hope of escape, the gunman shot himself."

James had already woken up but could not speak. He made some grunting noises, and Mrs. Baldwin grabbed a clipboard from beside her for James to write on with his uninjured left hand.

"How about you, are you hurt?"

Jimmy looked at what James had written and shook his head, "I'm fine, you know my skills. If the gunman hadn't killed himself, I'm sure I could have captured him alive for questioning."

Seeing James was about to keep writing, Jimmy said, "Don't worry, James, the case is over. I'm going to wrap up with Cage and the FBI and then head back to Dallas. Oh, I've recently been transferred from Manhattan to Dallas."

James put down the pen he was holding, and Mrs. Baldwin, holding the clipboard, took the pen and placed it on the table beside them along with the clipboard.

Mrs. Baldwin, "Alright, Jimmy, we're okay now. You go deal with your things, you'll have a busy day."

Jimmy nodded his head, left the ward, and went to the next room to call Detective Cherry to continue guarding James. He then left, drove to the county police station. The reason he went to the police station first was that it was closer, and when he had called Cage earlier, Cage had said he would go to the police station.
