North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 297: 272 It backfired on me while I was eating melons

Jimmy looked at the file and based on the timing, it was a case just received by the FBI that hadn't yet been assigned to anyone. His arrival was timely, taking on the case to investigate; moreover, it was one of those cases involving a body found years ago in the wilderness, likely to be another headless case.

The biggest trouble was, upon seeing Big Bend National Park, Jimmy couldn't help but recall what Roland had once said. Roland had taken Jimmy to Big Bend National Park, killed a demon, closed a rift, and then Jimmy had killed the people at the scene who were infected by the demon, and afterward left Roland to wander on his own.

Now looking at the file, Big Bend National Park, a cave, dozens of bullet holes, six dead people, death dating back 3-4 years. Excluding the absence of a demon, it was eerily similar to Roland's account. Jimmy felt chills down his spine. Could this cursed place be where he and Roland had killed a demon?

There were some crime scene photos and police investigation reports in the file, but Jimmy only glanced at them briefly without taking detailed notes. He packed up the file and went to find Jessica, as he was investigating solo this time and needed to borrow a set of investigation equipment from the Dallas office—camera, magnifying glass, fingerprint visualization kit, blood detection chemicals, and so on. Since the case was 3-4 years old, swaps, test tubes were not needed due to the issue of weathering, likely leaving no liquid traces needed to be brought back for lab tests.

Fortunately, it seemed Lambert had briefed Jessica, who smoothly provided Jimmy with a black toolbox, something he hadn't been equipped with in Manhattan before; previously only Jones had a set.

Jimmy, carrying the toolbox, met with Agent Ray Hope on the second floor, confirmed Lambert's message with Ray, exchanged phone numbers, then left the FBI office, grabbed some lunch, and drove directly to the hotel to pack up his luggage, leaving Dallas toward Roland's cabin.

Big Bend National Park was near the border of Texas. Technically, flying there would be more convenient for handling the case, but Jimmy decided to drive instead, primarily to meet with Roland first and verify if the case was related to their past actions.

Fortunately, it wasn't a long distance. By evening, Jimmy arrived at Roland's cabin.

Hearing the sound of a car, Roland came out to see a black sedan parking in front of the cabin, and Jimmy stepped out from the driver's side.

Roland, "Jimmy, why have you come back?"

Jimmy, "Let's talk inside. I need you to confirm something."

Roland and Jimmy sat on the couch, and Jimmy handed the file directly to Roland. "Roland, I received a case from the Dallas FBI office. In a cave in Big Bend National Park, they found six bodies. See if it is..."

Roland flipped through the file, "Hmm, it should be our doing. A monster appeared in Big Bend National Park earlier, attacking a campsite. Though everyone from the campsite ran away, no one died despite some injuries.

The injured campers were interviewed, and park police investigated, but they couldn't figure out where the monster had come from, thinking it was a prank.

We read about it in the newspaper and rushed there. We tracked the monster to a small cave. Inside the cave was a small rift, and some little demons had come out. They had also captured some campers as material for possession, to allow other demons to enter this world.

We killed the demons, and those used as material for possession were killed by Jimmy. They must be the skeletons in these photos."

Jimmy anxiously asked, "Is there anything left that could possibly implicate us? Like the bullet holes in the cave walls mentioned in the report. Or did we leave anything at the scene?"

Roland, "There shouldn't be anything. Some bullet fragments might be extracted from these cave walls, but they shouldn't be of any use."

Jimmy breathed a sigh of relief, "Then there should be no problem. Just missing and deceased tourists, which isn't a big issue. Every year so many people go missing in the United States, and many are never searched for after many years."

Jimmy took back the file, getting ready to leave. "Well, Roland, I'll be going now. I still need to drive to Big Bend National Park."

Roland, "Okay, be careful. If you have a chance, check if there's anything unusual inside the cave. There is a chance that the rift could reopen after being closed, but it usually doesn't happen so quickly."

Jimmy nodded his head, left Roland's cabin, and went to find a hotel to stay for the night.

That night, Lambert was reviewing files in his office when the phone rang.

Lambert, "Hughes, calling so late, what's the matter?"

Hughes, "How's Jimmy doing?"

Lambert, "Alright, for a rookie, he's passable."

Hughes, "Just passable?"

Lambert, "Pretty much. I gave him a simulated file. It shows he has analytical skills, but lacks experience.

I was planning to assign him a bank robbery case, but just a couple of days ago, we received a mass death case. The deaths occurred a few years ago, and it happened in a remote cave, solving it is definitely impossible. We'll see his ability once his report comes in."

Hughes, "You really play hardball, I only asked you to evaluate him. Well, handling a case solo best demonstrates one's capability. I'll await your conclusion."

Lambert, "Well, regardless, we need to be patient with the young ones. Why are you in such a rush to test him? I checked the records, he just started with you."

Hughes, "Ah, I didn't want to, but it's hard to gauge him. If he really lacks investigative potential, better to plan early, could even transfer him to HRT, which would give me some peace of mind."

Lambert was a bit speechless. A rookie agent, just a month into the job, was it necessary to define him so early? He felt Hughes wasn't telling the whole truth. It seemed this Jimmy had something, or maybe he hadn't looked thoroughly through the records?

Lambert, "Don't overthink it, let's just consider him temporarily assigned to us. I'll keep a good eye on him for you. By the way, isn't it about time for you?"

Hughes, "Yeah, soon. Once the replacement staff is arranged, it'll be about time to retire."

Lambert, "Congratulations. When you have time, come to Texas for hunting."

Hughes, "Will do. That's it for now, goodbye."

Lambert hung up the phone, thought for a moment, then turned on his dedicated computer to connect to the FBI database and began rechecking the files. He wanted to see what it was about Jimmy that Hughes was so concerned about.
