The smoke, like a resentful spirit, drifted away. Jimmy looked around once more before putting away his revolver and heading towards Priest Rodney.
After the middle-aged man fell to the ground and transformed, Priest Rodney had already let go. He had been punched by the middle-aged man earlier, and now his arm was deformed, looking at least fractured, possibly even shattered. Another priest held the short sword in reverse and approached Priest Rodney: "Rodney, how are you?"
Rodney painfully replied, "My arm is broken, but nothing else should be wrong. Rivera, go check on Cooper; he withdrew from the fight earlier."
Priest Rivera squatted down to look at Rodney's arm, nodded, stood up, and walked towards the position of the priest Jimmy had seen earlier, who should be Cooper.
Jimmy: "Priest Rodney, what exactly happened?"
Rodney didn't answer Jimmy's question but instead asked, "Jimmy, why are you here?"
Jimmy: "I was nearby when I received the call, so I came over. You still haven't said what you guys were doing?"
Rodney: "Alright, it's not easy for you to find us here. Thanks for coming; otherwise, the three of us would have been in grave danger. No one expected him to become so powerful in just a few days."
Jimmy: "Who exactly is this person?"
Rodney: "This person is named Oliver Torres from New Haven, Connecticut. He's a cultist who performed a human sacrifice there. The locals discovered it, and after confirming it was a ritual, the church arranged for an investigation. He killed one of our deacons and fled Connecticut to New York State.
We've been tracking his whereabouts, but with a few people, we couldn't take him down and instead lost manpower, which is why the three of us were here to intercept him.
You noticed, didn't you? Your bullets couldn't penetrate his body. At first, only his right fist was special, and we've tried handgun bullets before; they couldn't harm him. Only blessed blades could cut through his skin. But in just a few days, both of his hands have strengthened. Although I'm not sure what's going on, he probably acquired something else."
Jimmy turned to look at Torres lying on the ground, now so weakened: "Is this how he originally looked?"
Rodney groaned in pain, supporting his right arm with his left hand, unable to hold on any longer, and lay directly on the ground: "No, actually, he's even thinner now than before. His previous strength was likely due to being possessed. Can you check on Rivera and Cooper? We also need a doctor."
Jimmy looked at the scene: "What should we do here?"
Rodney: "We'll handle it, rest assured."
Jimmy: "No, I'm talking about the bullets in him. They were all fired from my gun. It'll be traced back to me."
Rodney turned his head in shock at Jimmy: "What? Your bullets made it in? What's happening?"
Jimmy was speechless: "Didn't you notice earlier? When he abandoned you to come after me, I fired two rounds of bullets from the front, injuring him."
Rodney: "No, that's not right. I saw your first two shots; he wasn't injured at all."
Jimmy: "Uh, I switched guns earlier."
At that moment, Priest Rivera walked over, shouting from a distance: "Rodney, we need to leave. Can you manage?"
Rivera's words interrupted Jimmy's response, so Rodney didn't continue asking but said, "Jimmy, help me up. Rivera, how's Cooper?"
Priest Rivera: "He's in bad shape, his left leg is broken, and he's taken a punch to the chest, possibly fractured. We need to get to a hospital urgently."
Priest Rivera came over and replaced Jimmy in supporting Rodney: "How are you? I'll take you out first, and then we'll make a stretcher to carry Cooper out."
Rodney: "I'm okay. I can walk. Let's go. Jimmy, come with us; someone will handle things here."
Jimmy followed them, but he took out his phone to record the GPS coordinates here. If Rodney and the others don't clean up thoroughly, he'll need to think of ways. If someone discovers a dead body with a dozen of his bullets, he'll be in big trouble, not to mention the lengthy procedures that'll need to be undertaken, the investigation itself will take an unknown amount of time.
He wondered how the church usually handled these matters. Simple resentful spirits are fine since they don't leave evidence behind. With possessions like this one, using cold weapons is understandable, but using a gun leaves too many traces.
Heading beside Cooper, Priest Rivera asked Jimmy to wait here as he went to the truck to see if there were materials to make a stretcher.
Finding large branches in the woods wasn't difficult; fabric for the stretcher, however, was a hassle. Fortunately, their clothes were enough.
They directly took off two men's jackets, attached them to branches, and twisted their pants to make rope to secure the clothes and branches. They made a barely usable makeshift stretcher, carried Priest Cooper out of the woods, and placed him on the pickup.
Priest Rivera drove them back, with Jimmy following in his car. As expected, their destination was the church Jimmy had previously tracked on Priest Rodney's phone.
On the way back, Priest Rivera probably had already called for an ambulance. When they arrived at the church, an ambulance was already parked at the entrance.
