North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 596: New Recruit Training 2

Julia: "It's in my notebook, I'll give it to you when I return to the office."

Jimmy: "Alright, how's the transcription going on your side?"

Julia: "Should take about another hour, let's return in the afternoon."

Jimmy: "Okay."

Jimmy is flipping through documents, finding several very suspicious vehicles. Their license plate information doesn't match the vehicle type, and there's one that outright has a fake plate, impossible to trace.

In New York, fake plates and cloned cars are very common, but for someone to carry out such a shooting, it's reasonable that they prepared fake plates in advance, so these vehicles are the most suspect.

But this judgment doesn't mean that vehicles with traceable plates are completely innocent. The gunman might have disguised themselves as an ordinary tourist, so to avoid being stopped by the police on the road, using a normal plate is understandable.

Many suspects have been found by patrol officers due to traffic issues, not only in movies but also frequently in real life.

In the afternoon, Mark and Julia returned to the office. Julia spoke as soon as she entered, "Jimmy, no leads. All five victims are from ordinary working-class families, they have no criminal records or known gang affiliations."

Jimmy nodded, "Understood, then it's safe to say this is a completely random act of social revenge. The shooter likely has some mental issues.

Alright, put the materials aside for now, our surveillance footage analysis is complete.

Julia, check all the vehicles recorded yesterday, and these ones too, see if there's any report of a similar case. The plates of these three cars have issues, I've already asked the tech department to investigate the surveillance of the streets near the park to track their movements."

Mark, organize the transcripts, and the testimonies provided by the people on-site."

This time, Jimmy didn't handle everything himself but arranged the investigation content for them to process, while the tracking of the problematic vehicles had already been organized in advance, with no need to wait.

Having not brought in new recruits previously put him at a disadvantage, Jimmy was too used to handling everything himself and would only coordinate when needing someone for specific tasks. Now with two newcomers, he had to change his habits, but needed to determine gradually how much to assign them without overburdening.

At least over these past two days, Mark and Julia haven't shown much opposition, especially Julia, who has certainly done more than Mark. Watching her researching on the computer, Jimmy wondered when she might refuse his arrangements.

Their investigation went smoothly, and the tech department found results in tracking the movements of the three cars as per Jimmy's orders, with the first car's route already confirmed.

Jimmy, upon receiving the call, shouted directly, "Julia, Mark, get ready to move out, we've located the first cloned vehicle."

All three stood up, adjusted their holstered guns, and headed out. Jimmy drove them to Brooklyn, identifying the district where the vehicle disappeared based on surveillance information. Jimmy drove while Julia and Mark looked around for the car's whereabouts.

"Found it. Front right, park there." Mark spotted a similar car ahead and as Jimmy pulled over, the three stepped out and approached the target vehicle.

Jimmy glanced inside the car, ensuring no danger, then looked up at the nearby apartment, using Heart Eye Observation to assess the building's situation, confirming no immediate threat before speaking, "Mark, go inside and find out who owns this car."

Mark nodded, and Julia followed him to the apartment. Jimmy trailed behind them, knocking on two apartments, confirming the ownership of the car at the entrance, before heading directly to the fifth floor and knocking on the car owner's apartment door.

Mark: "FBI Special Agent Mark Anderson, are you Mr. Scott?"

The man who opened the door looked at the badge in Mark's hand, unhooked the security chain, and opened the door, "Yes, what can I do for you?"

Mark: "Did you visit Felix Park yesterday afternoon? There's some information we need to discuss with you."

Scott looked at the three people at his door, "How did you find me?"

Jimmy chimed in from the back, "Let's come inside and have a proper chat, or I can call NYPD right now, think about your car."

Scott widened his eyes at Jimmy standing at the back, while Mark gave Jimmy a surprised glance. Jimmy gestured, and Scott stepped aside, allowing Mark and Julia to enter.

Records like this are best left to them, Jimmy watched Scott walk in and followed behind, casually closing the door.

Mark: "Mr. Scott, I want to ask, when did you go to Felix Park yesterday? What was your purpose?"

Scott looked at Mark and Julia sitting down, then at Jimmy standing, feeling a bit confused about who was in charge before him.

Jimmy: "I'm FBI Senior Agent Jimmy Yang, please answer Agent Anderson's questions."

Scott: "I'm an art enthusiast. I went to the park to paint."

Mark: "To paint?"

Scott: "Yes."

He walked over to something covered beside the living room, pulled off the cloth to reveal a drawing board mounted on a wooden stand, with a sketch of landscape covering a third of the paper, "I was there practicing painting."

Mark: "Do you know about yesterday's shooting?"

Scott: "Yes, I heard the gunshots and immediately dropped down, once it stopped, I packed up the drawing tools and left."

Mark: "Did your car stay in the park's parking lot? Did you notice anything unusual?"

Scott: "No, when I got to the parking lot, everyone was running around, I didn't see the shooter."

Mark: "In the parking lot itself?"

Scott: "I don't know, at that time I just wanted to get out quickly."

Mark kept questioning as Julia recorded beside him, asking more about Scott's personal situation, checking his driver's license, then tidied up the transcripts and stood up to leave.

Jimmy didn't interrupt their transcribing, he'd already used Heart Eye Observation on Scott's other rooms, indeed finding lots of painting materials and some tubular items, likely for storing canvases, along with some frames leaned against the corner. With such evidence, Scott's claims are basically credible, he truly seems to be an artist.

These irrelevant transcripts can just be recorded, likely unnecessary for further use, although Jimmy gave Scott a low warning as they left, "Take care of the license plate issue quickly, you might not be so lucky next time."

This unlucky guy, earlier during the inquiry, Mark also asked about the license plate. Scott, for convenience, simply swapped his mother's license plate onto his vehicle. As for his mother's car, having no repair value, he had it scrapped.

When the tech department inspected the plate information, they found the plate didn't match the vehicle type, leading to all the subsequent troubles. If he'd just sorted out an official plate, Jimmy and his team might never have needed to come and question him.

Scott seems like a sincere kid, throughout Mark's interview he barely concealed anything. Hopefully, this will be their last interaction, barring any unexpected events.

On the way back to the office, Jimmy received a call. He handed the phone to Julia in the passenger seat and put it on speaker, "Agent Yang, the car with the fake license plate has been located, in Brownsville, Brooklyn."

Jimmy: "Send the address range via text, thank you."

Technician: "Okay, I'll send it now. The other cloned car lost its trail, it disappeared in an area without actionable road surveillance. We can't continue the investigation, an on-site inquiry of its disappearance area is needed."

Jimmy: "Understood, we'll deal with the fake plate first. Julia, hang up. There's a map in the glove box, check the target location later."
