Standing Next To You

Chapter 618: Red Envelope II

Lin Sanju sighed at the overflowing enthusiasm of his sister and parents.

As he expected, his family would react this way. His thoughts drifted to that woman—her hair shimmered like gilded gold under the lights. He didn't know much about her aside from her first name. They were nothing more than acquaintances who happened to meet twice.

Though she had only appeared briefly, she left a deep impression on him—like a lingering fragrance that clung to his senses, no matter how strong the wind blew.

"There's really nothing going on," he said, trying to shut it down—but his slight smile betrayed him.

However, even as he denied it, Lin Sunji kept pressing him—asking how they met and if he wanted her help.

To finally stop them from pestering him, Lin Sanju pulled an envelope from the inner pocket of his suit jacket and placed it on the table.

"You guys should stop worrying about me. Our family's about to get busy—we need to prepare."

The moment the three of them saw the red envelope, they paused.

Lin Sunji picked it up, opened it, and read the card inside. Her face darkened.

"...Am I getting old? Why is everyone else getting married while I'm still single—with zero experience?! Even my stiff, uptight brother is having a romance before me." She sulked bitterly.

Li Mei was stunned for a moment—but then her face lit up with joy. "Oh my... they're finally tying the knot!"

It was a joyful occasion for the fourth branch. While they had anticipated it, they hadn't expected it to happen so soon. It seemed a certain man simply couldn't wait any longer.

Aside from the fourth branch, many others received the red envelope as well.

At the rehabilitation center, Lin Fei accepted a letter from the mailman. When he saw the names on the card and the wedding date, a grin tugged at his lips.

"I knew he wouldn't last a year." Not even half a year had passed since the two got together—and yet, the man clearly couldn't wait to tie his dear sister down.

Lin Fei set the envelope aside and began packing. "Time to hit the gym. I need to look my best for the wedding."

His rehabilitation had come to an end. The drugs had been completely flushed out of his system. The withdrawal symptoms had become tolerable—almost faint. According to the doctors and therapists, he was ready to leave the center, though he would still have to attend follow-ups and submit to random drug tests.

Over the past few months, Lin Fei's body had recovered. He'd gained some healthy weight, and the color had returned to his skin. He was no longer the frail, skeletal version of himself. Now, he resembled the old Lin Fei again—confident and cheeky.

He carefully placed the envelope in his bag and left the place he had stayed in for months. It was time for a new beginning.

But before that—he needed a makeover and a wedding to attend.

.....

In Country F, William stared at the red envelope in his hands, deep in thought. He had always known this day would come, but still...

"You got the invitation?" Melanie's voice came from behind him.

William hastily tried to hide the card, but her words made him pause.

"You knew?"

"That's a strange question. Are you asking if I knew that was a wedding invitation in your hand? Or if I knew that Fei Chuan has been planning to propose and marry Bei Sangyun?"

William blinked. "...Both."

"Well, I knew both." Melanie sat beside him. Her almost golden blonde hair fluttered behind her as she sat down. She snatched the red envelope William was trying to hide and began opening it.

William watched her closely. When she didn't burst into tears after seeing the pre-wedding photo on the invitation, he sighed in relief.

Melanie traced her finger over the couple in the photo. Fei Chuan was wearing a tuxedo. He looked incredibly handsome, his eyes sparkling as he hugged Bei Sangyun from behind and looked into her eyes. Bei Sangyun gazed up at him in return. Her wedding gown was gorgeous, highlighting her beautiful face, along with the elegant earrings and necklace she wore. Her smile was gentle, but her eyes were filled with unmistakable love.

It was just a photo, yet it radiated deep affection.

"...They look good together," Melanie muttered.

William assumed his sister must be envying Bei Sangyun's place. After all, she'd been saying for the past four years that she would only marry Fei Chuan. And now, the man she had always loved was marrying someone else—and the invitation was in her hands.

"When did you find out? A lot of people were surprised when they first received Fei Chuan's invitation."

"I had a gut feeling. Brother Fei came to visit our parents recently because of that deal, right? I figured he must have wanted to be honest to Bei Sangyun. And the last time he came here, he brought her to that place. I guessed he was planning to propose sooner or later."

William sighed. His sister was right. "I didn't expect Fei Chuan to be the first among us to get married. I thought I'd be first." He snatched the invitation back from her hand. "Anyway, I'm playing an important role in his wedding. I'll be his guardian with Grandma Pei on the first day, and his best man on the second day." He grinned as he boast.

Melanie—and the rest of the James family—had also received invitations from Fei Chuan, but only for the second day of the wedding ceremony. The first day, which would be the traditional wedding, was exclusive. William was the only one from their family invited, as he would represent Fei Chuan's kin.

"I'm coming with you. You can bring a plus one, right?"

"You already received your invitation. Just come on the second day."

"But I want to witness everything. It's Brother Fei's wedding, after all," Melanie pleaded with her eyes.
