Interlude 10
"I am surprised that you were not more upset about Lady Jikan dealing with the green dragon." Amaranth commented as she sat down her pen and stretched.
"Honestly, it sounded interesting, but after everything that had happened up until that point, and how messed up your mother and I were, we both knew that fighting that dragon was never going to be in the cards for us." Darkness explained. "I was more disappointed than anything. The entire trip had been riddled with corruption and traps, both literal and figurative ones. So many corrupt people and so many things that were far too complicated for your mother and I to join in at the end. We didn't want any part of most of what we had dealt with up until that point."
"It really did seem like Lady Luck was taking her due." His daughter offered.
Darkness nodded. "It does, doesn't it?" He asked rhetorically. "The view from the wall in Sapphirestone and wine were the only two things that I really liked about the city. Norrip had heart but little else. It was a welcome break between two horrid cities though. Vespera was a nightmare. Everything sucked. Snow is pretty but awful when you aren't prepared for it. Corrupt nobles are just gangsters with more reach and money. The traps haunted me for weeks. Dying in battle is one thing, but dying in a trap?" He shook his head. "That is towards the bottom of my list of ways to die."

Amaranth laughed. "You have a list?" She wondered.
"Bleeding out after the battle was won is at the top." He told her with utter confidence.
"What is at the bottom?" Amaranth asked her father.
Darkness shivered. A man that gave tons of others nightmares shuddered at whatever thought had gone through his head. "No, no I think I'll leave that to your imagination. Knowing you, your imagination won't cook up something that terrible." He told her.
"Awe." Amaranth complained. "So, are we taking a break here?"
"Yes and no." Darkness told her.
"Oh?" Amaranth questioned.
"We are taking a break from writing and storytelling." He explained. "Get your armor, spellbook, and sword. Then meet me in the training yard. We have work to do."
"But father, I have actual work to do, and a family that has only seen me for dinners for weeks." Amaranth protested.
Darkness sighed. "Fine. One week. I will be back in one week and I expect you to be ready to fight gods." He told her. "I am going to find your limits and then force you to break through them. No more putting off your push into the divine."
Amaranth gulped.
