Fragment of The End of the Scion's War: A Chronicle of Istaera's Liberation
Master Historian Valdris Thornquill
Circa 5e 27
The final battle of the Scion's War raged for seven days across the scorched plains of Istaera, where the last six surviving children of the Dark Lord made their desperate stand. Seeking to escape their siblings' fates, they gathered their hosts and marched on the Goddess's united armies.
Maluphet the Stormcleaver fell first, his mighty axe struck from his hands by the flashing blades of Dorian the Bladedancer. Nel-Thara the Soul-Render and Korthul, Voice of Thunder, were brought down next, shot from the sky by the ranger Elowen's unerring arrows. Zylla the Flesh-Weaver attempted to retreat, her myriad bodies scrambling for the Depths, but the great mage Kasimir, brother of the Divine Hero, destroyed her with a single spell of staggering power.
Only Vixis the Blooddrinker and Avara, Death's Whisper, remained. They withdrew to the keep of a brother slain nine years before, long before the final battle started in earnest, and there drew upon the Black Flame that had saturated the lands of Calvareth and Velmire. Their combined power became terrible to behold. With one fused incantation of black energy, they unleashed a storm of shadowed rain that slew thousands.
Yet the Divine Hero, blessed by the Goddess and wielding the peerless Sunblade, advanced through the slaughter. Chroniclers speak of a radiance so brilliant that even the remaining Scions could not look upon her without weeping. It is said that, with two swings of her shining sword, she struck down Vixis and nearly ended Avara.
Mortally wounded, Avara, Bitch of the North that she was, uttered a final, horrific curse. Not one to kill. One to punish. Yet, the Red-Haired Witch, most loyal friend to the Divine Hero, leapt before her beloved companion, taking the brunt of that sorcery upon herself. Doomed to be forgotten, she accepted her fate with pride, knowing she'd done a kindness to Reial by saving her dearest friend.
(Though forgotten by the world, this author offers thanks to the greatest witch of the ages for her loyalty and sacrifice.)
When the final battle ended, the Divine Hero knew death alone would not contain such beings. Drawing upon the deepest mysteries of divine magic, she opened the earth itself and hurled their black essences into the Depths. Her brother Kasimir sealed them there, weaving the Black Seal—the mightiest of all the wards created to seal the Thirteen away—to bind the last six Scions of the Dark Lord.
Above the seal, the survivors founded Galden, the Shield. Beneath, the dwarves established Khozad'Thar, the Stone Watcher, to guard the abyss for all time. Soon, both cities grew, and life returned to the lands of Istaera.
Yet, far below the surface world, it is said that their malevolent spirits still writhe and claw against the Black Seal, eternally seeking escape. It is even whispered that on the stillest nights, when the wind dies and the moon is absent from the sky, one can hear their voices. Even fewer claim that they've seen the bastards of darkness, that those blackest of souls try to tempt the living to—
