"Of course it's to cause trouble for those Snake-men!" The Dwarf's Big Beard bounced excitedly. "I get uncomfortable all over just thinking about those yellow snake eyes targeting my Dwarf comrades. Lynch, you'll support me, right?"
"Of course, why else would I be here with you?" Lynch said. "For the next few days, just rest well. Don't stir up trouble to avoid any more incidents."
So the two of them sat cross-legged in the cell, ignoring the noisy environment. They deliberately ignored the clamor from the drunken Dwarves in the adjacent cells.
There were many Dwarf guards coming and going, and their gazes would inadvertently linger on Morgan's cell, slowing down and then moving on. At first, Lynch thought they were just curious about him as a Mage, but after a few days, he began to grow suspicious of their observations. "Even if it's curiosity, it shouldn't last for three days, should it?" he thought, becoming more vigilant.
After having a few bites of the food Lynch brought, the Dwarf lay down on the ground and fell asleep. The Mage had been feeding Morgan with dry rations he carried, while the prison meals were all incinerated by Magic Fire. Lynch told the Dwarf, "You didn't do anything wrong, so being locked here is already unfair. Why should you eat the food here?"
Morgan soon started snoring, his arms folded and his whole body curled up comfortably, still smiling. It seemed like he wasn't in a confined underground prison but napping on a warm, sunny field. Lynch concealed his body in a corner of the cell, where there was no light, only shadows, but the Mage still felt safer. His hand reached for an oil lamp brought by the Dwarf guards, unaware of Lynch's night vision ability. "Perhaps, I should light this lamp, the brightness might make me feel better."
The sound of "pat, pat" came from the foot of the wall as a rat poked its head through a small hole. With plenty to eat from the food Lynch and Morgan dropped, it had grown quite plump. The original small hole was now too tight for it, and the rat strained its legs to escape this dilemma.
The Mage casually cast an Oily Technique on the wall to help the rat slip out of its predicament. However, it didn't stop but dashed outside at full speed, even tumbling several times without pausing.
Frowning, Lynch stood in the center of the room, recalling he had heard that rats could sense impending disasters, always fleeing from danger first. He looked towards the prison's entrance—there were no guards, and all the keys hung on the rack, suggesting no inspections were underway.
A foreboding feeling surged, and Lynch quickly summoned all his gear. "Morgan! Wake up!" he shouted, then a bolt of lightning blasted through the prison door.
The Dwarf awoke in fright, nearly rolling off the ground. Lynch pulled him by the shoulder, "Have you sat in prison long enough? Do you want to leave with me?"
"Is it time already? Did I sleep for two days or what?" Morgan rubbed his eyes. "Next time, don't let me sleep so long; I still don't feel my energy restored."
"Alright, follow me." The Mage kicked open the door and ran out, with the Dwarf mumbling, "How are you even more eager than I am?" as he followed closely.
The city felt unusually deserted, but traces of a large event were evident. The Old Dwarf Weite's funeral had concluded, and likely, all the Dwarves of the city attended the gathering. Lynch glanced towards the city's cemetery but saw no signs of Dwarves gathering, indicating they could only be in one place. The Dwarves were outside the city at the excavation site, preparing to witness the unveiling of the Gem River.
"Damn, it's earlier than I expected!" Lynch glanced towards the palace. "What talk of 'considering'? Sounds nice! But in the end, wasn't it just impulsive? Morgan, let's hurry up and go!"
"Where to? I haven't retrieved my weapon!" Morgan pointed towards the prison. "We left in such a rush, I didn't have time to tell you."
The Mage didn't say much, just tugged at Morgan's beard. His eyes spotted a Blacksmith shop, where many pieces of equipment were displayed on the wall. Using the Mage's Hand, Lynch hurled a hammer from the wall through the window, landing right at the Dwarf's feet.
