Chapter 986: Let's Go Back

Facing the overwhelming beast tide, seven figures agile as leopards swiftly weaved through. They showed not a hint of fear, even though it was very likely they couldn't withstand even the first wave of the beast tide. But they remained unflustered, doing what needed to be done. Babu pulled out an arrow as thick as a thumb from the quiver, drew his longbow, and with a whoosh, the feathered arrow flew out, accompanied by a whistle and a flash.

Thud, a fountain of blood splashed, the arrow as thick as a thumb plunged into one beast's neck and emerged out the other side, then pierced another beast's neck. Due to inertia, the two beasts killed by a single arrow continued running a short distance before collapsing to the ground with a boom, rolling far across the ground. The remaining beasts, following closely behind the two fallen ones, didn't expect such an event and crashed into the dead beasts. In an instant, it turned chaotic with beasts roaring fiercely. A nearby beast pounced aggressively on the two dead ones, desperately tearing and biting. The smell of blood attracted beasts within a small range, vying for the corpses, and soon nothing was left of the two beasts, not even bones. During this brief scramble, a few beasts clashed with each other, resulting in a few injured beasts in the beast tide.

Surrounding these injured beasts, other beasts watched them like tigers, waiting for an opportunity to strike. However, suddenly a roar full of authority emanated from the beast tide, and the beasts, which had been ready to move, suddenly quieted down, continuing their charge towards Yu'an City.

A horned wolf burst out of the beast tide with incredible speed. The horned wolf's body glimmered with a faint azure light, threads of wind force continually radiating from it. Its wild eyes fixed on Babu, the one who attacked, brimming with killing intent. With a roar, the horned wolf suddenly transformed into the wind, severing from the beast tide with even more terrifying speed, charging directly at Babu.

With a whistle, Babu, watching the rapidly charging horned wolf constantly changing direction, felt no fear. He squinted slightly, tracking the swiftly moving horned wolf. At the same time, he lightly placed his right hand on the string, pulling and releasing it forcefully. The arrow nocked on the string shot out with a whoosh. As if piercing through space itself, Babu's arrow appeared abruptly in front of the charging horned wolf, the sharp arrowhead unerringly embedding into the horned wolf's forehead.

The sound of skin ripping, the sound of bone shattering, both sounds erupted almost simultaneously. Mingled with the sounds was the splash of red blood and white brain matter. Without a single wail, the wind force surrounding the horned wolf suddenly dissipated, and its body thudded to the ground, rolling forward along the ground. It rolled until it reached Babu's feet before stopping completely. By that time, the horned wolf had entirely lost its vitality.

Babu laughed heartily and lopped off the horned wolf's head with the curved blade at his waist, tossing it behind him to land in front of Babu, while he forcefully kicked away the headless carcass. Babu caught the falling horned wolf's body, tilted his head back to let the dripping blood into his mouth, smacked his lips lightly, then grinned, showing teeth stained with blood. Babu's face was similarly covered in wolf's blood. Paired with his horrific grin, Babu resembled a demon crawling out of hell, frightening to behold.

An angry roar erupted from the beast tide, seemingly dissatisfied with the horned wolf's death at Babu's hands. The beast tide surged forward even faster. In just two or three breaths' time, the beast tide reached Babu and the others, and Babu only had time to release three more arrows, barely killing nearly a dozen beasts, before he had to put away his longbow and fight at close quarters with a tree spear.

Only when confronting the beast tide up close can you grasp the kind of mind-shaking scene it is. If another group were to stand in front of the hundreds or thousands of beasts composing the beast tide, they would be swallowed whole by this savage wave. But Babu and the others were different; they had been destined to be hunters from birth. As soon as they could walk, they carried knives around the tribe, chopping at the corpses of dead beasts. By the time they were ten, they were hunting beasts in the mountains, and only the best hunters could survive and return to the tribe. This brutal way of survival had shaped Babu and the others' personalities. Even when facing death, they showed no fear, for they had always walked the edge of life and death.

"Brothers, kill them! I assure you, not even the Elder has seen such a scene, hunting so many beasts. This is our glory!" Babu roared, his voice tearing through the air. His body was already drenched in beast blood, yet he continued to swing the tree spear in his hand tirelessly, dark and sharp light ceaselessly erupting from the spear, shredding every charging beast to pieces. As the flesh splattered, it coated Babu's body.

"This is our glory," the others responded, swinging their spears in unison with Babu.

They moved as nimbly as leopards, with the swiftness of lions, and as united as wolves. They relentlessly hunted the oncoming beasts, showing no sign of fear. Their bodies were covered in fresh blood, yet they exhibited no bloodthirsty desire. Their eyes were calm as water, their faces expressionless. Their actions were crisp and decisive, without the slightest hesitation. Every strike hit the vital point, leaving any beast facing them with only one chance at confrontation.

Before long, the area surrounding the seven was piled high with beast corpses. The sticky blood stained the ground, affecting the movement of Babu and the others as it pooled beneath their feet. Babu and the others were also covered in wounds, with fresh blood—whether beast's or their own—trickling down their bodies. No expressions were visible on their faces, detached to the point of coldness, making them appear even more terrifying. Against humans, their presence might suffice to win a psychological battle before a physical one starts. Unfortunately, their adversaries were beasts driven wild by the smell of blood.

These furious, ferocious beasts knew no fear; they followed the orders of the continuously roaring beasts behind them, attacking the seven blood-drenched beings before them. Growls, low and high, echoed continually, with bloodthirsty red gleaming in the eyes of surrounding beasts. Reckless of life and death, they poured toward Babu and the others.

Even a superhuman would tire facing so many beasts, let alone Babu's seven, who were no superhumans but mere men, mere men devoid of fear. As they began to slow in swinging their tree spears, the beasts charged faster.

Thud, Babu's spear pierced the neck of a beast. But with a flicker of a shadow, another beast lunged at Babu, mouth wide, before he could retrieve his spear. The beast's gaping maw exuded a strong stench, and if it bit Babu, he might not die but would surely be infected.

No sooner said than done, just as the beast was about to bite Babu's arm, a shadow beside him punched through the beast's skull, hot crimson blood sprinkling over Babu's face. Only then did Babu retrieve his spear.

Babu knew that their group's stamina was nearly depleted, and if they didn't retreat soon, they would truly be unable to leave. They were hunters, not fools. Initially, it was a hunter's instinct that drove them out of the city without hesitation. Now that their stamina was almost spent, they were preparing to retreat.

"Let's head back," Babu shouted, black light bursting from his spear as he shattered charging beasts to pieces. His steps, however, did not falter as he retreated.

Now surrounded on all sides, Babu and the others faced a daunting challenge in breaking free and retreating towards Yu'an City. Just as they resolved to retreat, the beasts surged even faster, and a roar that shook the heavens sounded, as a red figure suddenly leapt from the beast tide and loomed over them, unleashing a mighty bellow.
