The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 47: Our King Has Devoured

After the great battle, the green land was left charred black.

Two tigers with colorful stripes lay on the ground under the siege of Mountain Gods, bloodied.

Sun Wukong approached them: "I want to know about the Buddha Beads."

"What Buddha Beads? We know nothing!"

The two tigers glared at him: "You defeated us by outnumbering us, that doesn't make you a hero. Nothing to be proud of!"

"Do you want me to take action?"

Sun Wukong asked.

That would be just fine, the Mountain Gods were too enthusiastic, he always had no chance to make a move.

"Bring it on!"

The two tigers struggled to stand up.

"Alright then."

Sun Wukong nodded, exhaled softly.

Before the two tigers could react, their fur was blown to pieces by the wind, disappearing into the air.

They were completely dumbfounded.

"Can you tell me about the Buddha Beads now?"

Sun Wukong asked.

The two tigers hugged each other, trembling: "We really don't know who it is!"

Sun Wukong slightly frowned, and upon further questioning, he found that these two tigers were Demon Beasts born after the division of the world, inheriting their parents' power and claiming a mountain as their realm.

"How could this be?"

Sun Wukong wondered to himself, he had taken several oases but not a single Demon Beast knew about the Buddha Beads.

Could it be that these Demon Beasts have nothing to do with the Buddha Beads?

Sun Wukong shook his head, that was impossible.

He turned around, and said to the Mountain Gods: "Tie these two tigers up, take them on the road."

"Yes."

The Mountain Gods brought out ropes, captured the two tigers, and along with other captured Demon Beasts, they marched towards the next oasis.

"Why tie them up?"

Along the way, a Mountain God asked: "Why not just kill them?"

Sun Wukong shook his head: "This is better."

Killing the Demon Beasts would make the remaining ones fight to the death in resistance.

But capturing them could exert pressure on other Demon Beasts, forcing them to submit.

On the road, the Mountain Gods captured many Demon Beasts.

With these beasts in tow, during their attacks on other oases, many would surrender on their own.

Their group grew larger and larger.

Two days later, the procession came to a halt.

"What's happening up ahead?"

Sun Wukong asked.

"The creatures of the oasis ahead are blocking us."

A Mountain God replied.

Sun Wukong flew forward to see that the road to the oasis was blocked by thousands of creatures.

Humans and Demons alike, men and women, young and old, stood weapon in hand in the snow, looking at them with eyes filled with hatred.

Sun Wukong even saw a little girl shivering with cold, clutching a bow and arrow at the front.

"Your Majesty."

The Mountain Gods asked Sun Wukong: "These people are protecting the oasis, what should we do?"

Without realizing it, they had changed the way they addressed Sun Wukong.

Sun Wukong paid no mind to this detail, seeing so many creatures blocking his way for the first time, he couldn't help but frown.

This oasis' Demon Beast clearly differed from those elsewhere, deeply loved by the creatures, thus this scene had unfolded.

"Have you found that Demon Beast?"

Sun Wukong asked: "Is it unwilling to submit?"

The Mountain Gods nodded: "It refuses to submit."

Sun Wukong thought for a moment: "Let's not go forward for now."

The crowd looked at him, somewhat puzzled.

"This Demon Beast is quite special, but it won't be the last."

Sun Wukong said.

There must be more Demons loved by the creatures as this one is.

"Let it come out, I want to talk with it."

Sun Wukong said so.

Therefore, the Mountain Gods called out the Demon Beast.

Here, the Demon was an old serpent dragon, appearing much more aged and decrepit compared to the previous Demons.

Sun Wukong glanced and saw that its vital energy was depleted; it wasn't even a match for the Monthly Immortal.

"You are not welcome here."

The Old Demon said.

Sun Wukong was surprised by its boldness.

"Aren't you afraid of dying?"

He asked.

"What's there to be afraid of?"

The Old Demon sneered, "I've lived for a hundred thousand years, I've lived enough. If you want to take this green land, step over my dead body."

Sun Wukong found it peculiar.

"Don't you care about yourself, and don't you think about the beings here?"

He asked, "What if they die?"

"I'll make them lay down their arms."

The Old Demon said, "I'll be the one to stop you."

The Mountain Gods secretly admired the Old Demon.

The creatures in the snowfield looked at Sun Wukong furiously.

"Is that so."

Sun Wukong had figured it out; he nodded slightly, then waved his hand and chanted the word 'Bind'.

In an instant, all the creatures on the snowfield were immobilized.

Their expressions remained the same, yet like statues, they stood there motionless, unaware of anything.

The Old Demon was shocked, "What have you done!"

"I immobilized them so they won't see what's happening."

Sun Wukong said, "You will die here, and no one will see it, becoming just an evil dragon, talked about by future generations."

"You..."

The Old Demon glared bitterly at Sun Wukong, then lowered its head, "I surrender."

The Mountain Gods were in an uproar.

"What is going on?"

The Phoenix curiously asked the Monthly Immortal, "How did it suddenly give up?"

"Maybe it's not truly kind."

The Monthly Immortal replied, "It's only after fame."

Letting so many creatures stand in front of its troops didn't seem like something a kind Demon Beast would do.

This Jiao Dragon wanted fame.

Yet, without witnesses, even the greatest deeds become lifeless.

"To see through it so quickly."

The Monthly Immortal couldn't help but look up to Sun Wukong with respect.

Indeed, worthy of the Heavenly Emperor, his insight and wisdom are unmatched.

"You can join me in changing this world."

At this moment, Sun Wukong said to the Old Demon, "I can give you a better story."

The Old Demon thought for a moment and nodded in agreement.

After getting a promise from the Old Demon and discussing with him, Sun Wukong lifted the Immobilization Spell.

The creatures came back to their senses, all clueless about what had happened.

"The Heavenly Emperor is merciful; I agree to hand the green land over to him."

The Old Demon turned around and said to its subjects, "Previously, we were mistaken about him. The Heavenly Emperor is to return the sun to the earth; all beings should wholeheartedly help him."

The creatures looked at each other, then one by one put down their weapons.

They, along with the Old Demon, bowed to Sun Wukong.

With just a simple gesture, Sun Wukong settled the issue of the green land, and the Mountain Gods grew even more respectful.

The group continued onwards.

The Old Jiao Dragon followed by Sun Wukong's side.

"You've lived the longest; have you heard of Buddha Beads?"

Sun Wukong asked it.

"Of course."

The Old Jiao Dragon nodded, "They've been broken a long time ago."

It gave Sun Wukong an unexpected answer.

It turned out these Demon Beasts weren't transformed from Buddha Beads at all but came from a nearby region of heaven and earth.

That region was incredibly powerful and was destroyed in mutual annihilation with the Buddha Beads, leaving only the Demon Beasts who absorbed the power of the Buddha Beads and descended here.

"How did the original sun vanish?"

Sun Wukong asked, "Wasn't it swallowed by the Buddha Beads?"

"No, it was eaten by our king."

The Old Jiao Dragon replied, "The king accidentally consumed the sun, distributed its power among us, and then perished."
