The Tathāgata Must Fail

Chapter 116: Hurry and Run

Gouchen Heavenly Venerate, synonymous with the Supreme Heavenly Emperor of the Upper Palace and also known as Emperor Gouchen.

He, like Emperor Qinghua, is of the same rank as the Heavenly Venerates, higher than both the Martial God and Emperor Donghua in status, and equal to the Jade Emperor, except that he acknowledges the Jade Emperor as the Great Venerable.

Emperor Gouchen governs the poles of the world as well as the Three Realms of Heaven, Earth, and Humanity, overseeing the matters of warfare amongst mortals and revered as the Martial God.

Being known as the Martial God, his strength speaks for itself.

When Sun Wukong made havoc in the Heavenly Palace, Emperor Gouchen happened not to be present; otherwise, even Heavenly King Li would have had to bend his waist and listen to his orders.

"Great Saint."

After glancing at the two female demons on the ground, Gouchen came to understand everything: "Was all of this orchestrated by you in the shadows?"

Lady Earth Flow was struck with shock, and then turned her gaze towards Sun Wukong.

"No."

Sun Wukong shook his head: "I did nothing."

Lady Earth Flow breathed a sigh of relief.

However, Gouchen was not convinced and continued to inquire: "Without your behind-the-scenes manipulation, how would their mere wits have led to this current situation amongst the nations?"

"It's not me who is controlling them."

Sun Wukong replied: "It's greed."

"Greed?"

Gouchen laughed: "You may not have directly controlled them, but everything they have done falls within your calculations, am I wrong?"

Sun Wukong did not answer.

He had not directed Lady Earth Flow and the others to do anything, but he understood that their ultimate goal was to control the Golden Path, and that was enough.

Their methods were cruder than he had anticipated; worried about baiting too obviously with salted hooks, but the outcome trumped all—he still caught a big fish.

Gouchen God looked at Sun Wukong, who remained silent, and felt a bit of emotion.

"It's terrifying..."

This Great Saint's actions were impeccable; he had long discovered their covert activities but never made a fuss about it.

By showing up personally this time, he had walked right into a trap.

"Great Saint."

Gouchen continued to ask: "What do you want?"

"It all depends on Your Majesty."

Sun Wukong smiled and said: "If Your Majesty stops now and stays as a guest in Wanling City for a hundred years, I will pursue the matter no further."

Gouchen's expression turned cold, and before he could speak, an Immortal from the ground, unable to accept this, stood up and began cursing loudly.

"How dare you, do you intend to keep His Majesty under house arrest?!"

Sun Wukong shot him a glance.

"Eek!"

Immediately, the Immortal felt all the hairs on his body stand on end and, as silent as a cicada in winter, dared not utter another word.

Gouchen's mind began to whirl.

His plans for the Western Continent were not yet completed, but Sun Wukong had already found out, making it difficult to continue.

Besides, Sun Wukong is also a Heavenly Venerate of the Western Continent, and his strength is not to be underestimated; to squabble with him now would be meaningless.

It would be better to lay low for a while, conserve strength, and wait for an opportunity.

"...Stopping is possible."

After coming to his conclusion, Gouchen said to Sun Wukong: "But it's inconvenient for me to be a guest in Wanling City, release those Immortals and I will take them away from the Western Continent."

"Impracticable."

But Sun Wukong refused.

This took Gouchen by surprise; Sun Wukong was always known for his magnanimity, this did not seem like his usual manner.

"Why?"

"This is war."

Sun Wukong responded: "Your Majesty has made an enemy of me, and should be prepared for it."

Emperor Gouchen was a formidable opponent; now with the opportunity at hand, Sun Wukong naturally sought to resolve the threat as soon as possible.

Emperor Gouchen's expression chilled: "Great Saint, have you considered this carefully?"

Sun Wukong nodded: "If I'm not mistaken, has Your Majesty already separated from the Heavenly Palace?"

Gouchen narrowed his eyes slightly.

Sun Wukong knew he had guessed correctly.

To avoid the Heavenly Rules, there is a very simple method, and that is to defect from the Heavenly Palace. As long as one's Immortal Records are not under the Heavenly Palace, one is naturally not bound by the Heavenly Rules.

This is a method that only the Heavenly Palace and Lingshan are capable of using.

For Sun Wukong, Immortals are too precious, it's impossible to abandon any of them.

But now that Emperor Gouchen has left the Heavenly Palace, this also signifies—

Sun Wukong, at this moment, can do whatever he wants.

"Since the Great Emperor declines to visit Wanling City, then do not blame me for the offense!"

Sun Wukong's body began to ignite with fierce flames.

Emperor Gouchen shook his head: "I have a better choice."

He pulled out a scroll from his sleeve.

"The Map of Ten Thousand Gods!"

Emperor Gouchen opened the scroll, revealing a long picture that burst into radiant light, obscuring the sky.

Immediately following, beams of light flew out from the long picture, transforming into human forms.

"Heavenly Soldiers and Generals?"

Sun Wukong was somewhat surprised.

They were Heaven's soldiers and generals filling the sky, the Map of Ten Thousand Gods is a treasured item held by Emperor Gouchen, capable of concealing soldiers and generals. No wonder Emperor Donghua had never noticed; those Immortals had been hidden within the Map.

The Heavenly Soldiers and Generals burst forth from the Map of Ten Thousand Gods, covering the sky, each wielding swords and spears, brimming with the desire to fight.

As soon as they appeared, they quickly formed ranks and charged towards Sun Wukong with war cries.

The dense army poured down from the clouds, and from the ground looking up, they resembled a giant black whale opening its gaping maw, aiming to swallow Sun Wukong, the small fish, in one gulp.

"Brothers, chargeeeeee!!"

Marshal Tian Peng roared excitedly at the very front.

Ever since his uproar at the Heavenly Palace, he had been confined within the Map of Ten Thousand Gods until now. Now ordered to battle, he was eager to redeem his sins and escape the sea of suffering.

He surged towards Sun Wukong like a tiger freed from its cage.

However, just as he charged halfway, he gradually noticed the figure up ahead, and Marshal Tian Peng suddenly paused.

"That golden-haired fellow looks a bit familiar."

Marshal Tian Peng took a closer look.

"No, it's not right... How can it be him!"

He immediately cried out in alarm.

"Sun Wukong!"

"Great Saint!!"

The entire sky roared with the exclamations of the Heavenly Soldiers and Generals.

Without anyone giving orders, the pitch-black clouds abruptly ground to a halt.

This eerie sight left the onlookers on the ground dumbfounded.

"Retreat, retreat!"

Marsh Tian Peng came to his senses, and with a loud roar, the Heavenly Soldiers and Generals turned around in panic, aiming to return to the Map of Ten Thousand Gods to save themselves.

But when they turned around, where was the Map of Ten Thousand Gods to be found, and the figure of Emperor Gouchen had also vanished without a trace.

The Heavenly Soldiers and Generals felt a sense of despair in their hearts.

They turned into thousands of beams of light, scattering in all directions.

Sun Wukong shook his head, sighing.

"Jingu Bang."

He reached out and grabbed the Jingu Bang, which resonated with him joyfully.

Sun Wukong lifted the Long Stick and swung it downward.

The Jingu Bang grew in the wind, quickly becoming as large as a mountain, and with a smack, it crashed down on the Heavenly Soldiers above, heavily smashing them to the ground.

Countless figures fell from the sky, each creating huge craters upon impact.

After a series of "smack" sounds, the ground looked as if countless radishes had been planted out of nowhere.

Marshal Tian Peng supported himself on the ground, struggling to pull his head out from one of the pits.

"No good, I have to run away quickly!"

He spat out a mouthful of fresh blood onto the ground and prepared to leave.

Sun Wukong above saw this and gave a cold snort, and instantly numerous golden lights fell to the ground, forming a Golden Light Shield that enveloped Marshal Tian Peng and the other Heavenly Soldiers and Generals.

"What kind of move is this!"

Marshal Tian Peng was shocked, and as he looked again at Sun Wukong, he saw that Sun Wukong had already leaped forward, chasing in the direction where Emperor Gouchen had fled.
