The next day, Sun Wukong visited the Winter Palace.
"Reduce the performances at Miao Yin Square?"
The Grandmaster seemed surprised and hesitant.
"The fairies have been performing quite frequently lately."
Wukong spoke, "It would be best to change the performance times to night, and also to reduce their frequency."
After he finished speaking, he saw that the Grandmaster still looked troubled, which puzzled him.
"What trouble is there, Master?"
The Grandmaster pondered for a moment, then said: "The revenue from Miao Yin Square is quite good."
The fairy performances were highly sought after, and Miao Yin Square was an important source of income for Mountain and Sea City.
Understanding dawned on Sun Wukong, who shook his head, "Master, this is a minor profit."
He believed the Grandmaster would weigh the pros and cons.
The Grandmaster could not help but laugh at himself: "What you say is also true."
He was indeed blinded by the immediate profit, but after thinking it through, the Grandmaster agreed to cut back on the number of performances.
"Nowadays, the fairies have a significant influence, so care must be taken with the content of the performances."
Wukong reminded him once more.
"You can rest easy."
The Grandmaster replied with a smile, "I have plans in place, and the fairies know their limits."
The dances and songs performed by the Fairy Chang'e are either optimistic and positive or that promote unity and progress, inspiring people to strive for excellence.
The Grandmaster knew he must not let art affect the development of Wanling Country.
Having received the Grandmaster's assurance, Sun Wukong took his leave.
As soon as he left the Winter Palace, a familiar Immortal Energy appeared in Mountain and Sea City.
Wukong sought it out and saw an old man walking through Mountain and Sea City.
"The Matchmaking God."
Wukong greeted him.
"Great Saint."
Upon seeing Wukong, The Matchmaking God was all smiles as he greeted him back: "It has been many years since we last met."
Wukong nodded, indeed it had been several years since The Matchmaking God's last visit.
He accompanied The Matchmaking God on a walk through Mountain and Sea City.
The Matchmaking God curiously observed Mountain and Sea City.
Before he left, Mountain and Sea City had yet to be built, so coming back to see such a large city floating in the sky was rather shocking to him.
The then Wanling City had already provided a fresh experience, but the current Mountain and Sea City was beyond imagination.
A Dragon Car passed by on a distant track, making The Matchmaking God stop in his tracks to watch, feeling like he was dreaming.
"This place truly changes with each passing day."
The Matchmaking God exclaimed, having hardly recognized Wanling Country after just a few years.
At a deserted spot by the road, suddenly a sound of bells chimed. The Matchmaking God curiously looked in that direction.
A square metal object hanging from a tree was the source of the sound.
"What is that?"
"Music Notes."
Wukong was surprised: "Hasn't the Matchmaking God seen them before?"
"I have not seen this kind before."
The Matchmaking God looked at the Music Notes with great interest.
"This is exclusive to Mountain and Sea City."
Wukong explained that Mountain and Sea City had installed many Music Notes for the convenience of schools.
"But the sound diminishes quickly, and the effective range is not extensive."
"That's not bad, either."
The Matchmaking God shook his head, "In the Northern Continent, to notify monks for scripture recitation, they still have to send someone out to shout announcements."
"Northern Continent?"
Wukong became interested: "Has the Matchmaking God been there all these years?"
"Yes."
The Matchmaking God nodded, "Buddha treated me warmly, invited me to listen to teachings there; I almost didn't make it back."
Wukong was taken aback: "Why is that?"
"The Buddha speaks of the Tao."
The Matchmaking God explained: "Listening to those teachings, anyone could ascend to Jile [paradise], fortunately, I have my Immortal Position, so I did not abandon my duties to become a monk."
Wukong understood internally, no wonder his informants had been out of touch for so long.
Most likely, they had become monks...
"How are the marriage fates in the Northern Continent?"
Wukong asked.
Speaking of his Immortal duties, the Matchmaking God could not help but shake his head: "These years in the Northern Continent, the marriage lines have dwindled somewhat..."
Though he had his suspicions, he only shook his head and said, "Perhaps it is a misunderstanding."
You certainly are not mistaken.
Wukong thought to himself, with Buddha's wisdom being exceptional, it is difficult to fathom his actions.
But what Buddha was clearly doing at the moment was spreading the Buddhist Law throughout the Northern Continent.
"Does he intend to enlighten everyone?"
Sun Wukong merely had this thought and found it unbelievable.
If that were true, Buddha's ambition would be far greater than both his and the Jade Emperor's.
However, trying to enlighten everyone was nearly an impossible task.
Sun Wukong asked The Matchmaking God, "How long will The Matchmaking God stay in Wanling Country this time?"
"One year."
The Matchmaking God said, "I am looking to find some disciples to pass on my mantle and help me straighten out relationships here."
Sun Wukong was startled, "Why is that?"
"I cannot come here often in the future."
The Matchmaking God said, "The Jade Emperor has established Three Thousand Immortal Paths, and marriage is one of them. I need to preside over the Marriage Palace, and I must return next year to take charge."
He felt a sense of how things and people have changed; in just over a decade the Three Realms had transformed.
Immortals used to enjoy their freedom, but now they all must descend to spread the teachings.
And all this change was single-handedly brought about by the Great Saint at his side.
"I have divined that there are people with a predestined connection to me nearby."
The Matchmaking God said.
Sun Wukong became curious, who would become The Matchmaking God's disciple?
He followed The Matchmaking God as they walked forward, and when they arrived at a school, The Matchmaking God suddenly stopped.
"This is the place."
The Matchmaking God indicated a direction.
Sun Wukong was puzzled, but suddenly, the sounds of pursuit came from the other side of the wall.
"Stop, you can't skip class!"
"Your teachings are boring; we don't want to listen!"
The familiar voices had just reached Sun Wukong's ears when several strands of spider silk shot from the sky, sticking to the large tree outside the wall.
Following this, seven little tykes used the spider silk to fly out.
"Let's go play at our big brother's place today!"
"Sure!"
Ignoring the teacher's shouts from inside, the Spider Demons skillfully climbed onto the tree, adept at truancy.
They noticed the two people on the ground.
"Hey? Great King!"
Their eyes lit up with joy, they jumped down and clung to Sun Wukong, "Why are you here, did you come to see us?"
Sun Wukong was getting a headache, but The Matchmaking God was pleased.
"So it's the Spider Demons, with their use of spider silk. No wonder there's a connection with me."
He looked at the witty appearances of the little ones and grew fonder the more he watched.
Seeing his gaze on the Spider Demons, Sun Wukong felt something was off: "The Matchmaking God, don't tell me the disciples you speak of are them?"
"Of course."
The Matchmaking God queried in surprise, "I see them as clever and shrewd, what's wrong with that?"
"Of course, there is something wrong!"
Sun Wukong immediately asserted.
What a joke, if these mischievous little ones became disciples of The Matchmaking God, Wanling Country would likely descend into chaos.
"Not possible? What's not possible?"
"Yeah, what's not possible?"
The Spider Demons were clueless about what the two were discussing.
"I wish to take you as my disciples."
The Matchmaking God said, "But unfortunately, the Great Saint does not agree."
The Spider Demons looked to The Matchmaking God, "And who might you be?"
The Matchmaking God stroked his long beard, introducing himself, "I am the deity in charge of marriage, the God of matrimonial joy."
"What is the God of matrimonial joy?"
The Spider Demons gathered to discuss among themselves.
"A matchmaker?"
"That's what a matchmaker is."
"He has red strings that can pair people up!"
"Does that mean our big brother won't have to stay single anymore?"
They chattered excitedly for a bit, quickly realizing the benefits of becoming disciples of The Matchmaking God.
"Master."
The Spider Demons ran over, happily wrapping themselves around The Matchmaking God, their eyes sparkling.
"We want to be matchmakers."
"Teach us how to play with the red strings!"
"Can red strings be used to fly kites?"
The Matchmaking God was pleased internally, but it seemed he was beginning to understand why Sun Wukong disagreed.
