The Unwanted Son's Millionaire System

Chapter 93

The sudden, quiet feeling of victory was ripped away in an instant.

Just moments before, they had been watching their plan succeed on the laptop screen. They had felt like heroes. But the sight of a sleek, black car sliding silently down their street—a street that was supposed to be secret—was like having a bucket of ice-cold water thrown on them. The thrill of seeing OmniCorp's stock price fall and their hashtag trend online vanished completely. In its place was a raw, stomach-twisting fear. They were prey, and the hunters had found them.

"They're here," Silva said again, his voice low and rough. He was already in motion, his soldier's instincts taking over as he grabbed their heavy duffel bag. "But how? We were so careful! How did they find us this fast?"

Kaito's face went pale with dread. "It's the internet connection!" he gasped, his hands frantically pulling cords from the laptop. "The line we tapped into is dirty—it's full of hidden tracking software. The second we sent out all that data, it was like we lit a giant flare, showing them exactly where we are!" He snapped the laptop shut and shoved it into his backpack, along with the precious hard drive they had stolen. "I can't believe I was so stupid! I got us caught!"

"There's no time for blame!" Ace interrupted, his own heart pounding like a drum. The mysterious power inside him, which he called the System, was flashing a urgent, silent warning in his mind, like a blaring alarm only he could hear.

DANGER. ENEMY FORCES ARE CLOSE.

- ONE BLACK CAR (MATCHES OMNICORP'S STYLE).

- TWO MORE CARS ARE COMING FROM DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS.

- THEY HAVE US SURROUNDED. THE MAIN DOOR IS NOT SAFE.

"It's not just one car," Ace told the others, forcing his voice to stay steady. "There are more. They're closing in from all sides."

Evelyn's eyes grew wide with fear. "The loading bay in the back! It's the only way out!"

"They'll have men waiting there," Silva countered, his voice a low growl. "These aren't ordinary thugs. They're trained. They'll have every possible exit blocked." His eyes scanned the huge, dark, and crumbling factory floor, looking for any advantage in the decay. "Our only chance is to go up."

"Up?!" Kaito's voice shot up in panic. "Ace, this building is condemned! The floors above us could fall apart at any moment!"

"It's either that," Silva shot back, already marching toward a rusty, groaning staircase that led up into the blackness, "or we get packaged up and delivered to that suit, Sterling. Now, follow me!"

With no other choice, they followed Silva. Their footsteps echoed loudly in the vast, empty building, each sound feeling like it would give them away. The metal staircase groaned and shook under their weight, threatening to collapse with every step they took. It was a terrifying gamble.

From down below, they heard a harsh, screeching sound—the loading bay door they had used was being forced open. They could hear men talking to each other in quick, efficient voices. The hunters were inside the building with them.

Silva brought them to the second floor, a creepy landscape of empty offices stripped down to their frames and dead, silent machines. He didn't let them pause, pushing them toward another staircase that looked even more dangerous than the last. "Don't stop! We have to get to the roof!"

"The roof?!" Evelyn protested, struggling to catch her breath. "That's a dead end! We'll be trapped!"

"It's not!" Silva insisted, his voice full of certainty. "There's an old maintenance ladder that goes down to the building next door! My cousin Leo used it to get back and forth!"

They shoved the rooftop door open and burst out into the cold night air. After the dusty, still air inside, the wind felt like a slap. The glittering lights of the city spread out around them, a beautiful view that only made their desperate situation feel more hopeless. The roof itself was a dangerous mess of cracked black tar, rusty metal vents, and the giant, skeletal frames of old water tanks.

"Over there!" Silva pointed to the far edge of the roof. A rusty, old fire escape ladder was bolted to the side. It didn't go down to the street. Instead, it was connected to the next warehouse over by a narrow, shaky-looking bridge made of a few wooden planks.

As they started to run across the roof, bright, powerful beams from flashlights suddenly shot up from the street below, sweeping over the brick walls near them. A shout rose from the darkness: "They're on the roof!"

Ace dared to look over the short wall at the edge of the roof. His blood ran cold. The street was swarming with activity. Three black cars were parked at odd angles, their doors wide open. At least six men dressed in black tactical gear, like soldiers, were moving in a coordinated pattern, using hand signals to communicate. These weren't just security guards; this was a small, professional army—Sterling's personal "clean-up" crew.

"Go, go, go!" Silva urged, practically pushing a terrified Kaito toward the plank bridge.

Kaito froze at the edge, staring at the terrifying gap between the buildings. The ground was a dizzying drop far below, and the few boards laid across the gap looked old and rotten. "I can't," he whispered, paralyzed by fear.

"You have to!" Evelyn said, her voice firm even though her own eyes were wide with terror. She grabbed his hand. "Don't look down. Just look at me. We'll go across together."

While Evelyn carefully guided a trembling Kaito onto the creaking planks, Silva and Ace spun around to face the rooftop door. With a loud bang, it burst open, and two of the armored operatives rushed out, raising their weapons.

Silva didn't waste a second. He snatched up a long, rusty pipe from the ground and hurled it like a spear. He wasn't trying to hit them, just to distract them. The pipe clanged loudly against the doorframe, making the lead man flinch and lose his focus for a critical moment.

In that same instant, Ace acted. He didn't have time to use his nanites. Instead, he reached for his power to manipulate sound. He focused all his energy, dialing the frequency up to a painfully sharp, piercing tone, and blasted it directly at the two men.

It wasn't enough to knock them out, but it was a complete shock to their systems. Both men cried out, stumbling backward and clutching their helmets as a wave of disorientation and sharp pain shot through their heads.

"Now!" Ace yelled to Silva.

Silva charged like a raging bull. He slammed his full weight into the disoriented men, driving them back through the doorway and into the staircase, creating a tangled heap of bodies, curses, and confusion.

Ace turned and sprinted for the plank bridge. Evelyn was already on the other side, pulling a shaking Kaito to safety. Ace didn't think. He just ran, his feet pounding on the wood that bent and groaned beneath him. He kept his eyes locked on Evelyn's outstretched hand and leaped the last few feet, landing hard on the gravel-covered roof of the next building.

"Silva!" he yelled, whipping around.

Silva was still at the doorway, using his immense strength to hold it shut against the operatives who were shoving from the other side. "Go!" he roared, his face contorted with the strain. "Get to the river! The old sewage outflow tunnel! I'll find you!"

"No!" Evelyn screamed, her voice breaking.

"GO!" Silva bellowed, his final command echoing across the rooftops.

Ace's heart felt like it was being torn in two, but he knew Silva was right. It was either sacrifice one, or they would all be captured. He grabbed Evelyn's arm and Kaito's backpack, pulling them away. "He'll make it," Ace said, the words feeling hollow and bitter in his mouth. "He's Silva."

They scrambled across the new roof, their eyes desperately searching for a way down. On the opposite side, they found another old fire escape, this one a rusty metal staircase that zigzagged all the way down to the ground, disappearing into a narrow, foul-smelling alley.

As they started their frantic descent, the clanging of their feet on the metal steps was drowned out by the sounds of a final, violent struggle from the roof they had just left. They heard the sickening thud of a heavy punch landing, a sharp cry of pain, and then Silva's voice—a raw, furious roar of defiance that seemed to shake the night itself. It was followed by a terrible, final sound: the heavy, unmistakable thump of a body hitting the rooftop.

Then, an awful, chilling silence fell.

Tears streamed freely down Evelyn's face, but she bit her lip, refusing to let a sob escape and give away their position. Next to her, Kaito was shaking, crying quietly as he clung to his backpack, the last piece of their old life. Ace felt something break inside him, leaving a cold, empty space where his hope had been. Silva was gone.

Their feet hit the pavement of the alley, and they started running again, not knowing where they were going, just needing to get away. Ace let the mysterious System in his mind take over, a cold, digital map overlaying his vision and guiding him through the confusing maze of dockside alleys. He led the way, every nerve screaming, expecting to feel the searing pain of a bullet in his back with every step.

Finally, they skidded to a halt at a broken-down section of the riverbank. A huge, circular tunnel, like a giant pipe, poured dirty water into the river. It was blocked by a heavy grate, thick with rust and grime. The air was thick with a disgusting smell—a mix of saltwater, rotting garbage, and harsh chemicals.

"In here," Ace croaked, his voice raw. He focused the last bit of his energy, commanding the microscopic machines inside him to attack the rust-eaten hinges of the metal grate. With a final, sharp crack, the hinges gave way, and the heavy grate fell into the water with a loud splash.

Without hesitation, they waded into the tunnel. The water was knee-deep, shockingly cold, and filthier than anything they had ever experienced. They pushed forward into a darkness so complete it felt solid. The sounds of the city—the sirens, the distant traffic—faded away, replaced by the drip of water, their own sloshing steps, and the unsettling skittering of things they couldn't see.

After what felt like an eternity, they found a slightly raised concrete ledge, mostly dry. They collapsed onto it, shivering violently, huddling together for what little warmth they had left.

They were safe. For the moment.

But the price of that safety was almost too much to bear. They had exposed a powerful corporation and brought down its CEO, but OmniCorp had hit back with terrifying force. They had lost Silva. They were soaked, freezing, and more hunted than ever before.

In the overwhelming blackness, a sudden, sterile light flared to life. Kaito had opened his laptop, which he had miraculously kept dry. The screen's glow illuminated their faces, pale and streaked with dirt and tears. With trembling fingers, Kaito navigated to a major news website.

The headline was huge, impossible to miss: OMNICORP CEO VANCE STEPS DOWN AMIDST MOUNTING SCANDAL.

They had won. They had actually won. They had defeated a giant.

But as they sat there in the freezing filth and darkness, the victory felt hollow and meaningless. It tasted like loss and dirty river water. The storm of chaos they had unleashed to save themselves had swept up everyone in its path, and they were now left drowning in the aftermath, haunted by the fear that their friend had been the first one the storm had taken.
