Seeing that the tension between them was escalating the elderly man who owned six prime Mumbai apartments could not tolerate this rudeness any longer.
He spoke up reasonably "Perhaps we should relocate to the pavilion area over there. Us people are indeed blocking the sidewalk so others genuinely cannot walk past.
This young man is wearing a security guard uniform so he is probably on duty and must hurry somewhere. We should let him pass."
"Why?" Rekha instead of backing down talked back sharply and demanded.
She glared at Alex with naked hostility while pointing her finger directly at his face. "You need to understand your proper social status in this world. You are merely a security guard positioned at the very bottom of society! Do you understand that?
If you refuse to work harder to find yourself a better job than this then sorry, but not sorry you will never be able to find a wife willing to marry you.
I am here trying to secure blind date opportunities for my daughter's future happiness. How dare you attempt to stop me from pursuing my child's happiness?"
Alex thought to himself with growing anger.
Damn this ridiculous woman.
What does your daughter's supposed happiness have to do with me personally?
Is that really your justification for blocking other people's path?
Alex's eyes turned noticeably cold with restrained fury. "Who told you that being a security guard automatically means someone exists at the bottom of society?"
As soon as these challenging words emerged from his mouth the entire atmosphere shifted dramatically.
Not only was Rekha completely stunned by the unexpected defiance.
Everyone else gathered around was also shocked into temporary silence. The air felt heavy with anticipation.
They had never anticipated that this security guard would dare to display such boldness and confidence when confronting Anjali's arrogant mother. He showed not the slightest hint of cowardice or submission to social pressure.
After all it is not everyday people see security guards trying to talk back to someone of higher stature than them.
"You...!!" Rekha sputtered with outrage and fury. She pointed accusingly at Alex unable to find words to refute him properly.
Before she could say anything Alex cutting her midway said coldly, "Do not point your finger at me like that."
"Who exactly do you think you are to judge me and my work?"
Alex calmly slapped away Rekha's finger that had been pointing directly at him. He gave her a cold smile that contained no warmth whatsoever. At times he could be soft hearted to people who didn't know him and his background but this situation was different.
"How dare you!" she shrieked.
"You as a mere security guard dare to offend me in such a manner!"
Rekha was so angry she ground her teeth together audibly. The sound was almost animalistic. "Your monthly salary probably does not exceed five hundred dollars! How dare you stand before me and act so boldly?
You are exactly the type of person that everyone discusses and mocks online, who despite being poor act like they are some bigshot! I never expected to encounter such a person here in real life. Seeing you genuinely disgusts me!"
"What kind of brain-dead logic are you operating under?"
"Cannot a security guard possess confidence and self-respect?" Alex challenged her.
Alex spoke with complete calm and certainty. "We security guards also perform honest hard work that deserves respect. We do not steal or rob from others.
Our salaries are earned legitimately and we pay our taxes to the government like everyone else.
On the contrary it is you who stands here spouting nonsense while looking down on this person and that person.
Your crude behavior and attitude reveal exactly what kind of person you would have raised your daughter as.
I fear for the family in which a daughter like yours might go after marriage. I can already imagine how unfortunate that family might be to marry into such a family.
It will not be long when they will understand how much of a merely ordinary mediocre material she is."
The entire gathering fell into stunned silence, this time the words had broken all the boundaries.
No one had expected that a simple security guard would dare to directly confront Anjali's mother at this matchmaking corner! And that too with such harsh words that cut to the bone.
The reversal was shocking.
That security guard was absolutely amazing! The courage was admirable!
Some people in the crowd began whispering among themselves. Their eyes sparkled with barely concealed delight at seeing the arrogant woman finally challenged.
"You!!" Rekha could barely form coherent words. Her face had turned a dangerous shade of red.
"You are not even worthy of carrying my shoes for me!" she finally screamed.
Rekha had completely lost control of her temper. She was flying into an absolute rage. She pointed at Alex while yelling with increasing volume "If you are so incredibly capable then tell me exactly how much you earn monthly!
You probably do not even make five hundred dollars each month! Yet you dare to comment on my daughter? Who do you think you are?!"
Alex replied simply and honestly "Sorry to disappoint but it is exactly five hundred dollars monthly."
"Five hundred dollars?!" she repeated with shocked disbelief. Her eyes widened to an almost comical degree.
"Ha ha ha!" Rekha laughed with cruel mockery. The sound echoed through the park.
"How can anyone possibly survive in Mumbai on five hundred dollars monthly? Even garbage collectors earn more than your pathetic salary!"
Her voice grew louder with each word. She wanted everyone present to witness this security guard's humiliation.
At precisely this dramatic moment a new figure entered the scene.
A well-dressed man in an expensive tracksuit approached the commotion. His presence commanded immediate attention from those nearby.
"Excuse me what is happening here?" the newcomer asked with authority in his voice.
It was Sahil, the manager of Khapar Law Associates.
What is he doing here?
