"Brother, is what we're doing a bit improper?"
In the wooden tower arranged by the Annihilation Sect for ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian.
Behind the wooden bed where ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian was sitting in meditation, two figures watched ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian's back through the veil, whispering and muttering to each other. At this moment, a faint trace of Dao charm still lingered around ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian. The powerful and secretive will that had descended here had just left. Otherwise, Wu Wang and the Sleep god wouldn't dare appear directly here.
How faint was that trace of Dao charm? If not for Brother Sleep God capturing this trace and placing it in front of Wu Wang, Wu Wang's divine thought at this time would have been utterly unable to detect it. Let alone a Transcendent Realm cultivator like the Grand Elder, even an Evil God like the turncoat Ming Snake wouldn't react to it at all.
How could the methods of the Heavenly Emperor be so easily seen through?
ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian had yet to awaken from his deep slumber. He remained in a meditative posture, his head drooping down, his snoring quite rhythmic.
The Sleep god lifted his greasy left hand, intending to reach for ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian's back, but Wu Wang held his hand down.
Wu Wang frowned and said, "Brother, do we really need to take someone else's memories like this?"
"Memories are memories, dreams are dreams, these two shouldn't be confused. I am the Sleep God, checking someone else's dreams, what's wrong with that? Is that not within the rules?"
Wu Wang laughed and scolded, "I think you're just curious."
"Aren't you curious too?" The Sleep god's eyebrows seemed to dance—twitching, scrunching, turning, and pulling—as he communicated telepathically, "Emperor Shun actually took action against a Yuanxian Realm cultivator. What is going on here? Don't you want to know? Don't tell your brother you can suppress such curiosity! I've made up my mind anyway. I'll take a look and then run, and come back to see you in a few years…"
"Hey! Run for what! Are you afraid of Emperor Shun now?" Wu Wang seized the moment to grab the Sleep god's wrist, a trace of cheekiness in his eyes.
The Sleep god's mouth twitched crazily a few times, huffing, "What's shameful about fearing Emperor Shun? He's the present overlord, the master of Heaven Palace. Do I have the guts to confront him directly?"
"So you're saying, confronting him indirectly isn't off the table then?"
"Enough with the jokes," the Sleep god said, "there's something wickedly strange about this whole affair."
"Indeed…" Wu Wang said softly, "I'm also a little uneasy. If Emperor Shun truly wanted to take action against someone, why would he do it so blatantly? The recent behavior of Heaven Palace is extremely abnormal, and with the Earth God taking the stage, who knows what he's calculating. We'd better be careful, lest we be used by Emperor Shun."
"Being used is unlikely; Emperor Shun made his move on Sanxian very covertly, presumably not wanting anyone to notice." The Sleep god scratched his double chin, thinking for a moment. "You make some sense, but for Emperor Shun to use a dream manipulation technique and try to evade my scrutiny is somewhat difficult. Don't you know? Your brother is not just the Sleep God on the surface. Even if Emperor Shun deliberately laid a trap, your brother could still act on the level of Divine Skills to resolve it. Give me a straight answer, do we look or not?"
"Let's have a look," Wu Wang gritted his teeth. "Sorry, Senior Sanxian!"
Having said that, Wu Wang loosened his grip on the Sleep god's wrist and immediately grabbed his belt, cautious that the Sleep god might have his divine spirit wander off after browsing through the dream memory.
This matter was indeed quite strange. In just a few months, the Southeastern Region had become the battleground for the two most powerful forces, Heaven Palace and the Human Domain. Both sides deployed their formations and tested each other, being drawn into a delicate balance by the Heaven Palace faction. Even strong gods of Heaven Palace appeared one after another, continuously putting pressure on the Human Domain. The Sun Goddess Xihe, for instance, appeared conspicuously at the rear to support Heaven Palace, causing considerable concern among the Human Domain's forces. But dragging on like this was bound to cause problems.
The Human Domain had to make a decision now. Wu Wang had been planning to persuade Shen Nong to wage war directly, striking Heaven Palace powerfully in one swift blow, but then this happened—Emperor Shun was sending a dream to Sanxian Daoist.
Perhaps, this was like two planks in a pond that seemed unrelated; as more planks surfaced, they could form a pathway.
"Then I'm really doing it." The Sleep god's eyes narrowed into slits, his left hand pressed against the curtain, slowly closing in on the old Daoist's back.
Wu Wang saw the Sleep god's left hand suddenly turn into a mist. As the fabric of the curtain trembled gently, this hand of mist passed through unharmed and reached into the back of ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian's head.
A moment later, the Sleep god slowly withdrew his left hand. Within the mist, there was now a small clump of gold sand.
The Sleep god muttered, "This is somewhat different from sending a dream… these memories appear to have been sealed within ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian's Divine Soul, and are now being released… Let's leave quickly, be careful of Emperor Shun coming back to investigate."
Wu Wang nodded, took another glance at the sleeping figure of ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian, who was bowing his head, then stepped back several paces, blending into the wooden wall with the Sleep god.
Without disturbing the formation here, the two men directly exited through the wall of Wu Wang's dwelling.
With a handful of gold sand, the Sleep god and Wu Wang rushed towards the desk, their bodies enveloped in a dense mist, shielding themselves from prying eyes and Immortal Consciousness from all around the dwelling. They put their heads together and fiddled with it.
A short while later.
Wu Wang and the Sleep god looked up at each other, both with somewhat calmer expressions on their faces. In fact, they even breathed a sigh of relief, with a flash of realization crossing their eyes.
The Sleep god said, "Aren't we a bit too calm?"
"I was thinking the same," Wu Wang winked at the Sleep god, and then both the man and the god simultaneously got into character. Wu Wang, the Young Master, adopted an incredibly solemn expression, his pupils slightly unfocused. He stepped back two paces and sat down in the wooden chair, his entire body tense. After a moment, regaining his composure, a look of realization dawned on his face. Meanwhile, the God of Yun Meng, disguised as the Sleep god, furrowed his brows deeply, his eyes filled with uncertain amazement, clearly hesitating about whether to flee or not.
The grains of gold sand turned into a faint glow and disappeared in front of the two of them. This was precisely a segment of video, a message, a dream reenacted by the Sleep god from ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian's experiences—they had watched it, extracted the information within, and thus the gold sand naturally dissipated.
With a grave tone, the Sleep god said, "Little Brother, give me a slap; I can't believe this could be true!"
With a wooden expression, Wu Wang stood up, raised his hand, and swung it down, accompanied by a crisp SMACK. The somewhat corpulent divine form of the Sleep god was sent flying, gusts bursting from around him, dispersing the surrounding mist and crashing into the stone wall veiled by the curtain. He tumbled down the stone wall, his head spinning with several colorful, illusory birds, his eyes turned cross-eyed.
Wu Wang clasped his hands behind his back and laughed, "I've never heard of such a ludicrous request."
The Sleep god leaped up, patting his cheeks to bring his eyes back to normal, and swore through gritted teeth, "You really hit me!"
Wu Wang shrugged. "You know I have great respect for your opinions, Brother."
The Sleep god ground his teeth and rolled up his sleeves, ready to engage Wu Wang in a real man's battle.
Wu Wang quickly said, "This matter, Brother, what do you think we should do?"
"What to do?" the Sleep god said resentfully, dropping his fists, muttering, "It doesn't much concern me. As for the grievances and entanglements between your Human Domain and Heaven Palace, better not involve a minor idle god like me."
"Sigh…" Wu Wang, with his hands still clasped behind his back, looked toward the location of ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian's wooden house; at this moment, signs were that ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian was about to awaken.
At this moment, Wu Wang's heart was actually somewhat perturbed, not as calm as he appeared. It was simply that the dream vision revealed by ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian, and the message it left, was somewhat startling.
The words of ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian from the past resurfaced in Wu Wang's mind. The fog that shrouded ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian had begun to lift a little.
'I have promised someone that I cannot become an immortal in this lifetime.'
'Wu Wang, you needn't worry about me. When my time comes, it comes, the inevitable end of every living being.'
'I want to return to the Southeastern Region, where I've already found a gravesite for myself, a place with clear mountains and beautiful waters, where I will be buried…'
Wu Wang looked up at the dome of the cave and slowly sat back in his chair, leaning against the backrest with his hands on the armrests, sinking into deep thought.
The content of the dream vision was actually not complicated.
The water's surface was as smooth as a mirror, and beneath it seemed to be an abyss, yet it appeared to be only a finger deep. In the center of the water, a Bagua-style altar floated silently, its blue stones tainted with light green moss and covered in numerous cracks. Just below the altar, two figures stood quietly. One, dressed in simple ancient robes, surrounded by the rhythm of the Dao of Order, was the Heavenly Emperor, Emperor Shun. The other was ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian, with his white hair and deep wrinkles, staring bitterly at the figure before him. Emperor Shun's back was turned to ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian, his expression unreadable. ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian looked troubled, hesitating to speak several times.
Emperor Shun's voice was gentle, "You know the consequences of breaking our agreement."
"Isn't there still a few more years…" ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian said with a trembling voice.
Emperor Shun turned slightly, glanced at ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian, and spoke softly, "The time has come; consider the consequences carefully."
ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian opened his mouth but could only bow his head with a long sigh and make a bowing salute.
The scene faded away slowly with the long sigh of Sanxian Daoist, and Wu Wang was engulfed in prolonged silence.
The 'that person' who had made the 'vow of non-immortality' with ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian turned out to be the lord of Heaven Palace, Emperor Shun.
If Emperor Shun feared Sanxian Daoist's talent in the Dao of Formation, taking precautions, it might make sense logically, but upon closer scrutiny, there were still various discrepancies. Furthermore, although ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian's theories on grand formations were profound, they shared an advantage in the 'weak spiritual energy' environment, just like his artifact refinement skills. This matter should have nothing to do with the shallow Five Elements Formation theory. The source of Emperor Shun's profound wariness, to the extent of direct threats, was very likely ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian himself.
And then there was the matter of Emperor Fuxi's divine aura.
"It's best not to meddle in this affair." The Sleep god murmured beside him, "We can't do much anyway, don't overthink it, pretend we didn't see anything."
Wu Wang raised his hands, rubbing his brow and temples.
Lin Suqing came out of the inner cave, approaching gracefully, and asked softly, "Young Master, do you need to rest for a while?"
"No need to rest for now," Wu Wang smiled at Lin Suqing and lowered his hands. "Please bring some tea."
"Yes," Lin Suqing replied, trying to tread lightly. She had already sent Little Shui to boil the water, while preparing the fine tea leaves sent earlier by the Four Seas Pavilion.
Wu Wang closed his eyes to rest for a while, then opened them and looked at the Sleep god next to him, his lips moving as he transmitted his voice, "Emperor Fuxi's divine aura… Brother, do you still remember this phrase?"
"How could I forget?" The Sleep god sighed and said, "It's likely the case. Wasn't it said that Emperor Fuxi left no corpse in the end, but instead left a boundless formation in the Human Domain? When I think about the scene I just witnessed, if you say that Sanxian Daoist has nothing to do with Fu Xi, then I definitely wouldn't believe it."
"So, Emperor Shun is cautious, threatening in secret, and prevents Senior Sanxian from becoming an immortal?" Wu Wang's eyes burst with divine light as he asked, "If that's the case, then why doesn't Emperor Shun just eradicate Senior Sanxian and end it all?"
"It's not that simple," the Sleep god said, calculating with their fingers for a while. "We still know too little information. To play this game against the Heavenly Emperor with what we have is almost a guaranteed loss."
Wu Wang fell silent, his gaze drifting away from the Sleep god's, and he sat there, lost in silence.
The situation was complex; the planks that had surfaced were far from enough. But there was one thing Wu Wang was sure of. The more the enemy wants to do something, the more we must stop them! The Heavenly Emperor is plotting something; he threatened ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian to go to a certain place in the Southeastern Region. Also, that Bagua altar in the dream seemed to be hinting at something. Could it be related to Emperor Fuxi? Yes!
Previously, when Brother Sleep God met Senior Sanxian, he was so startled that his wine glass fell from his grasp. Afterward, he explained to Wu Wang that ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian possessed the divine aura of Emperor Fuxi. This so-called divine aura, profound and inscrutable, could now perhaps be affirmed: ThreeOld Daoist Sanxian must be related to Emperor Fuxi!
Wu Wang raised his hand to hold the necklace at his chest and signaled Lin Suqing to rest inside the cave. Subconsciously, he wanted to keep these troubles away from Lin Suqing and Blue Bird. Probably because he felt they wouldn't be able to do anything if they knew, and it would only add to their worries.
What to do? Wu Wang had always understood a principle: the occurrence of many tragedies is either due to overconfidence in one's abilities or because of too little self-confidence. And also, because information doesn't get passed on in time within one's own camp. In his previous life when he watched TV dramas, he often couldn't help but criticize those plotlines that were triggered by 'a sentence not fully expressed.' Wouldn't it be solved by just speaking out? Keeping secrets upon secrets, making big secrets from small ones?
At times like this, Wu Wang was very decisive. He directly connected with his mother for communication. At the same time, his Primordial Spirit sank into the Yan Emperor Token and actively called upon Emperor Yan of Shennong.
He recounted in detail to his two strong backings the entire process of becoming acquainted and familiar with Sanxian Daoist, as well as the Dao charm of Emperor Shun captured by the Sleep god, the stolen dream, and the contents within that dreamscape.
After listening, Cang Xue's reaction was much like Brother Sleep God's: they both told Wu Wang not to act rashly.
When Shen Nong learned of this, he was silent for a while and then said slowly, "Wu Wang, could you bring this Sanxian Daoist to me?"
"If we show any peculiarities, is there a chance the Heavenly Emperor might respond?" Wu Wang explained with some worry.
"Wu Wang, you needn't worry too much," Shen Nong said soothingly with a laugh. "You can rely more on us old bones, and there's no need to force yourself to do anything. Just do everything within your capacity. Just like the incident today, it's fortunate you spoke in time; otherwise, a grave mistake might have been made. I am the Human Emperor; it is my duty to plan for the Human Domain, and even more so for the future of the Human Domain. My greatest wish is to leave a Human Domain without external threats in the hands of successors, to end this suffering that has persisted since ancient times."
Wu Wang asked, "What grave mistake are you referring to?"
"Emperor Shun operates with comprehensive considerations; what you see may only be what he wants you to see." Shen Nong laughed a few times and said, "Arrange for me to meet with Sanxian. Don't interfere with the rest."
"Alright." Wu Wang agreed. Seeing Lin Suqing bringing tea over, he felt a lot more at peace in his heart.
