That instant, Hogus felt as if he had been struck by lightning.
It wasn't just the overwhelming intent to kill that unnerved him, but also the terror transmitted from the Evil Eater Chainsaw in his hands under the scrutiny of that handsome face.
It was a terror he had never experienced before.
Ever since he unearthed this chainsaw from the American ruins, he had become irresistibly infected by the endless hunger and ferocity dwelling within it. He was intoxicated by the whispers that echoed incessantly in his ears, growing increasingly ancient and grotesque by the day.
Even as he was scorned and despised for his fall from grace, the Power he wielded was indescribably strong and wild, beyond defamation. Having become one with the chainsaw's bloodline, he had turned into an abyssal beast that fed on blood. In a symbiotic relationship, he provided the chainsaw with blood, and it, in turn, provided him with Power.
But now, he felt an unprecedented fear from the malevolent Source Substance pulsating in the chainsaw.
It was as if, through that blood-stained visage, he had glimpsed a nature more ferocious and insane than his own.
He was being watched by malice that lurked in profound darkness and by Predators from a higher dimension.
Quivering.
He stepped back in astonishment. Blinking in disbelief, he tried to get a clearer view of the increasingly blurry figure. But after a moment of darkness, Huai Shi's smiling face materialized before his eyes…
So clear, so ruthless.
Just an arm's length away.
Gazing at his twisted expression, Huai Shi smiled, "What are you... looking at?!"
In front of Hogus, Huai Shi raised his palm, fingers clenched tight. His cyanotic skin revealed streaks of crimson, as if made of glowing hot iron.
He threw a punch!
The Drummer thundered.
Instinctively, Hogus tried to block with the chainsaw. But before his hand could even rise, he was enveloped in darkness. It was as if he'd been hit head-on by a rampaging truck and sent flying backward.
On Huai Shi's arm, muscles burst and then rapidly repaired.
The torn skin sealed back together, with only wisps of blood-red mist rising.
Huai Shi advanced.
From the shattered rocks, Hogus screamed, struggling to crawl out, only to feel himself being lifted upwards uncontrollably.
A palm had clamped onto his forehead, yanking him up from the ground.
As if uprooting a carrot.
Fingers slowly tightened.
Screaming in excruciating pain, his skull moaned.
Under the infusion of Apocalypse and deadly poison, Hogus screamed in madness, wildly swinging the chainsaw, resisting aimlessly.
But his screams quickly turned to roars.
Countless blood vessels abruptly extended from the chainsaw, burrowing into his body and frantically draining his flesh and blood, roaring thunderously.
Mangled with metal and bone, the chainsaw spun wildly. Eyes popped from its spine, bloodshot and looking around aimlessly, before finally fixating on Huai Shi.
Hogus had turned completely pallid.
Devoid of all color.
Since his blood had turned into a scarlet blaze fueling the chainsaw, the Evil Eater Chainsaw roared as it swept across, colliding with the Axe of Anger, sparks flying.
"Eat... eat... I must... eat..."
In midair, Hogus twisted like a Spider, ignoring the sound of his neck snapping as he broke free from Huai Shi's shackles.
He landed, scuttling on all fours. His speed was swift as the chainsaw blended into his bones, fusing his entire arm into it.
The Ghoul had been eroded by this vicious Border Relic, transforming into an inhuman, fierce monster that shrieked hoarsely at Huai Shi.
As if that could scare away the enemy.
His answer was a descending Axe Blade.
With the friction of the Enchanted Gloves, gray electric light from the Source Material Transformation clung to the Axe Blade. It burst forth with a fierce thunderclap in Huai Shi's leaping cleave.
Amidst the roar, the spinning chain shattered, sending splintering bits of bone flying.
Hogus clutched the Axe Blade in desperation, lifting the chainsaw integrated into his right arm and striking at Huai Shi's face.
The Axe Blade dissipated in an instant.
The Sacrificial Knife swung horizontally, becoming firmly wedged within the spinning Sharp Blade.
Then, the Sword of Virtue was raised. Striking forward, it ripped through Hogus's chest, tearing open a vast gash from which putrid Plasma splattered.
The deformed body was hurled backward, but from the gash in his chest, countless Teeth emerged, and twisted innards lashed out like tongues.
His entire chest had turned into a ravenous maw. The chainsaw, now part of his body, became a spinning set of Teeth. The broken form suddenly bolstered itself, lunging at Huai Shi once more.
Frenziedly preying.
Huai Shi stepped back. His Thunder Light Axe Blade deftly sketched an arc, then rose up and slashed at the leaping monster.
The crisp sound of a skull shattering rang out.
Then, electricity scattered, causing the carcass infested by the Evil Eater Chainsaw to scream in paralysis.
As Huai Shi waved his hand, the Sacrificial Knife lodged firmly into the gaping maw on Hogus's chest. It wildly drained all life essence, which transformed into exquisite engravings and Crystal Stones on the blade.
The flesh withered.
The Sword of Virtue, held inverted, was raised and plunged down.
It completely penetrated the creature's spine.
The Evil Eater Chainsaw let out a piercing scream. Its countless eyes shattered, meeting their doom under the thin line of light from the slaying Sword Blade.
In that final moment, Hogus's shattered face struggled to lift. His skewed eyes, filled with resentment and fear, glared deathly at Huai Shi. "What in the world... are you..."
"The Envoy of justice."
Huai Shi emotionlessly drew his Sword Blade and crushed the last vestiges of consciousness.
The Source Substance dissipated.
The Electric Saw Ghoul met its demise.
In the dead silence, Huai Shi looked around and asked expressionlessly, "Anyone else?"
Shadows beneath the vegetation swayed, but no one responded.
"If not, I'm leaving."
Huai Shi snickered, sheathed his sword, and turned towards the White Horse.
The shadows writhed slightly, as if in anger. But when Huai Shi turned back to look, they shrank back into the darkness like frightened birds.
Huai Shi shook his head. He bent down, washed the blood from his face in the babbling brook, then picked up the reins of the White Horse and continued onward.
Before leaving, Ai Qing seemed to look back unintentionally at Amber, who lay unconscious on the ground.
They departed.
「After a long while」
A pale-faced man slowly crawled out from the shadows of the vegetation. After removing the shadow realm breathing device from the corner of his mouth, he gasped violently for air.
Sweat soaked his back.
He had nearly been killed just now.
Damn it, four hundred million... Can you spend it if you're dead?
The man glanced at the urging message on his phone and spat discontentedly. After cursing out the intermediary who had assigned him the task, he hung up the call.
He was still trembling with residual fear.
But soon, his eyes lit up as he looked at the scattered belongings around him.
Even a mosquito's worth of flesh is meat; it's better than making the trip for nothing.
After stripping the equipment from the bodies of the deceased, he turned back to the unconscious Teenage Girl on the ground. He rubbed his hands together, unable to help swallowing.
His breath quickened.
"I bet you have a daring idea."
Suddenly, Li Jian Amber, who was supposed to be unconscious, opened her eyes and watched him calmly, "I suggest you pack away that daring idea. Then, place the items in your hands on the ground..."
The man paused, grabbed the items, and turned to run.
Gunshots roared.
He fell to the ground.
Amber emotionlessly put away an ornately decorated flintlock pistol, stood up, and methodically picked up the equipment from the ground, piling it together.
When she turned back to look at her bento box, all she saw were the shattered remains and the rice balls that had fallen into the mud.
"Show some respect for food, damn it."
She looked in the direction Huai Shi had departed, her annoyance finding no outlet.
Her phone rang in her pocket.
"Hello? Director? Yes, I've been knocked down and nearly died."
Amber tilted her head, lit a cigarette, and complained helplessly, "Why do I have to do these jobs that only make enemies?"
"Isn't temp work for just that?" Her Older Cousin's unconscionable laughter came from the phone. "Besides, if Elder Sister Three went, wouldn't the whole flavor change? After thinking it over and over, you're really the best choice..."
Amber sighed and flicked her cigarette ash.
"I'm not afraid of offending people, but is it useful?"
"Just imply it enough to make the point. If you say too much, you give others something to talk about. That little girl is so smart, she'll surely understand, right?"
"Who knows?" Amber shrugged.
"Yeah, who knows?"
After a brief silence, Zhu Hongchen couldn't help but sigh, "I hope that young man will be okay... Xuan Niao Old Man is going to scold me again for interfering in Astronomical Society matters. This really wasn't worth the trouble."
Amber didn't take his cue, just smoked her cigarette quietly, looking in the direction Huai Shi and his group had fled. Suddenly, she asked, "What do you think, will he really give up?"
Older Cousin didn't answer.
Everyone knew the answer, but no one wanted to see that outcome.
In the end, Zhu Hongchen could only sigh, "You've had a rough time, Amber."
"Isn't this what temps do?"
Amber smoked her cigarette with a defeated expression, shook her head, and sighed, "It's so frustrating. The masterstroke I devised to deal with Luo Xian never got a chance to shine, and I couldn't even beat Huai Shi. This world really has no justice! Director, can you consider giving poor Little Amber a raise for the emotional trauma?"
"Er... How about a commendation and urging everyone to learn from your exemplary deeds?"
"Forget I asked."
Amber pursed her lips, disgruntled, hung up the call. She quietly finished her cigarette, stubbed it out, gathered the loot she had collected, and turned to leave.
But as she walked, she couldn't help but look back over her shoulder.
She didn't know if it was envy or pity.
"Good luck, Lord Prince,"
she murmured softly, "There's really not much time left for you..."
