Abyss Sequence

Chapter 29: The History of Blue Star (Part 2)

"Why do you say that?" Sasa aptly raised the question.

Ximen Tiesuan grinned and said, "Because Blue Star was not originally connected with the Abyss from the beginning; otherwise, during our archaeological digs, we would definitely uncover some remnants of giant beasts. The problem is that most of the giant beast remnants discovered so far are dinosaurs, with very few suspected of being 'modern' remnants. According to our tests, their time of death is only a few thousand years ago."

I see!

Sasa and the others suddenly understood, realizing they had forgotten that archaeology could detect the time of death of remains using instruments.

"Currently, some old-era news reports can still be found, which mention the discovery of unidentified giant beasts and giant remains. Researchers at the time believed that these giant beasts and giants were some kind of mutated species. It wasn't until the Abyss descended and Magic Power reappeared on Blue Star that they realized these remnants were not so-called 'mutated species,' but rather demons and humans."

Ximen Tiesuan elaborated on what he knew: "From this, we can infer that the Abyss formed a connection with Blue Star during a specific past time frame, which is likely between fifteen thousand and twelve thousand years ago. As for why it was that time period, I can't explain it well. Let's not dwell on that and return our focus to the theme of the 'Saint.'"

"Engraving is clearly a manifestation of legacy and wisdom, not something that naturally exists. Since you know about the 'Saint,' you should also understand how a Saint emerges—by battling strong foes, and after defeating them, obtaining a large amount of Magic Power and elevating their existence. That is a Saint. Past Saints might have ascended by consuming demons, whereas Yan Luo, you entered a deadly-class demon and acquired a large amount of Magic Power by bathing in its blood, thus achieving ascension. From this, we can deduce that the emergence of Saints is simpler than that of Engravers."

"Yes, it seems counterintuitive; clearly, the number of Saints is quite rare, yet it's easier for them to come into being compared to Engravers!"

Sasa and Li Xinyue both turned their gaze towards Yan Luo.

Yan Luo had already recounted the experience of obtaining this physique; many on Blue Star knew that he battled a deadly-class demon as an ordinary person, nearly perishing alongside it.

The birth of a Saint is indeed that straightforward, much more so than the complex study and inheritance required for engraving.

All it takes is courage, strength, and a bit of luck to become a Saint.

Unfortunately, these qualities are not something everyone possesses; an existence like Yan Luo is as rare as a precious gem, possibly not emerging among even billions of people.

Ximen Tiesuan continued: "The emergence of Saints can propel the evolution of extraordinary powers within humanity; those with low Magic Power adaptability can receive bodily enhancement through blood bestowal, while those with Magic Power adaptability gain the ability to automatically absorb Magic Power. The former represents a tremendous boost for a tribe, but the latter poses danger.

"Why? The answer is simple: without Engraving, those with Magic Power adaptability who venture into the Abyss or high-concentration Magic Power environments may experience drunkenness symptoms. If their bodies continue to automatically absorb Magic Power, with it accumulating endlessly within them, it could lead to death!

"In this scenario, the 'Samurai' came into being as a class—after receiving blood from a Saint and surviving, those with extremely low Magic Power adaptability could obtain bodily enhancement; they are absolute Superpowers compared to ordinary people, naturally superior to them. Understand that this was an era of civilization's dawn; possessing such powerful abilities and given their rarity, doesn't this provide the basis to become a distinct class?"

So history can be explained this way!

Sasa couldn't help but let their mind wander and asked, "Then Professor Ximen, is the caste system on the South Asian Subcontinent derived from this too?"

Ximen Tiesuan smiled, revealing that Sasa's understanding was quite aligned with his thoughts.

"That's correct; you're very smart. The caste system arose from this! As we know, until Sakyamuni was born, there was no legacy of engraving over there; they relied only on Saints as Brahmins and Samurai as Kshatriyas to confront the Abyss and demons. Those with Magic Power adaptability couldn't receive blood, thus they were denigrated as Vaisya, Shudra, and Dalit. Ironically, there seemed to be a method of detecting Magic Power adaptability over there; those with high Magic Power adaptability often became Dalit, perhaps because the Brahmins believed these individuals were closer in constitution to demons!"

Having answered Sasa's question, Ximen Tiesuan returned to the topic at hand: "After the emergence of Saints and establishing the Samurai class, countless years passed. Perhaps due to a chance discovery, or someone realized that demons could continuously absorb Magic Power and remain alive, they began researching demons. By dissecting demon corpses, humanity obtained engraving, after which civilizations began to flourish."

"What about Ancient Indian civilization?" Sasa was particularly curious, since Ximen Tiesuan had just mentioned that until Sakyamuni was born, that civilization did not possess a legacy of engraving.

Ximen Tiesuan smiled knowingly, understanding Sasa's curiosity, and said, "Though there is no historical evidence to prove this, we suspect that the Brahmin class was aware that the emergence of engraving might cause upheaval in the caste system, so they continually blocked this knowledge. At that time, there was no concept of information sharing as today; each civilization tightly guarded its engraving legacy, so Ancient Indian civilization had no opportunity to access engraving.

"Information becomes distorted as it spreads. By the time Sakyamuni was born, there probably weren't Saints among the Brahmins, so they didn't understand why to block the existence of engraving. Thus, Sakyamuni developed their engraving after becoming a Saint, allowing people of any caste to attain cross-class status by becoming Monks. That's where Buddhism originated. Until the decline of the Magic Power environment, engraving became extremely difficult, allowing the caste system to regain the upper hand."

Sasa and the others nodded repeatedly; interpreted this way indeed made sense.

Then Ximen Tiesuan continued: "The history of Saints is roughly like this; after the emergence of engraving, our history started transitioning from being dominated by Saints to being led by Engravers. The gods in Greek mythology were likely some powerful Engravers, as Saints didn't possess those special abilities.

"The special abilities of Saints are only a few; their bodily functions are exceptionally strong and can be continuously strengthened. They can also bestow their blood, enhancing the bodies of those with low Magic Power adaptability and granting the superpower to automatically absorb Magic Power to those with adaptability. Moreover, they seem to be able to foresee the future, although this is a result of their enhanced perception and brain after strengthening. In fact, the special abilities of Saints are limited to these."

Sasa blinked in confusion and asked, "So... that's it? Professor, are those the only abilities Saints have? No others?"

Ximen Tiesuan shook his head, "No, because the abilities of Saints are derived from the root of 'humanity.' They can only enhance existing human capabilities and cannot possess other special abilities."

Upon hearing this, Sasa turned, exchanging a glance with Yan Luo with tacit understanding.

Sasa took a deep breath, turned back to Ximen Tiesuan, and said, "Professor, did you know? Yan Luo is also a Saint."

Ximen Tiesuan was a bit puzzled but nodded, "Yes, I know he is a Saint, so what about it?"

When they arrived, Sasa had already admitted that Yan Luo was a Saint; Yan Luo possessed all the abilities that a Saint had.

So Yan Luo was definitely a Saint; what's strange about that?

While Ximen Tiesuan was perplexed, Sasa said, "During his previous battle with the enemy, since the enemy had set up a weightlessness field, he used individual Magnetic Fields to intersect with the Earth's Magnetic Field, achieving the goal of flight—Yan Luo can fly!"

"...Ah?"

Ximen Tiesuan was dumbfounded.
