The Forensic Doctor Better Than a Detective

Chapter 91: Clues Under the Magnifying Glass

At this moment, Li Jian and Wan Junjie walked out of the Youyuan Hair Salon.

A promising clue had inexplicably come to a dead end.

Wan said, "Boss, do you think the proprietress might be lying? Does she really not know the real name?"

Li Jian glanced around and said in a low voice, "I observed her just now; she didn't seem to be lying."

"Moreover, if she really didn't want to cooperate with our investigation, she could have just said she didn't know and dismissed us."

After listening to this, Wan said, "Exactly! If she didn't want to help us, she could've just refused outright."

He glanced back at the salon and said, "After more than a year together, really not knowing the name is a bit of a stretch."

Li Jian said, "Actually, I don't find it that strange."

"Did you notice there wasn't much hair on the salon floor?"

After thinking for a moment, Wan instantly understood.

"No wonder she didn't leave any real information; it makes sense now."

Li Jian said, "As far as this case is concerned, I find what that woman said quite credible."

"Are you saying that this woman named Xiaolan was taking refuge with her boyfriend?"

Li Jian nodded.

Subsequently, Wan picked up the photo in his hand, looked at it, and said, "Yesterday, we didn't know what the deceased looked like."

"Today, we know what the deceased looked like."

"Yet, we still don't know her identity. "

Li Jian lit a cigarette and said, "At least we're moving toward solving the case."

"Let's go! We continue investigating!"

Meanwhile, in the 403 office of the Back Mountain police station,

Jiang An said, "The left tibia of this headless female body had a past fracture in the middle section."

Zhang Yean quickly squatted down.

She hurriedly asked, "Where? Where?"

"The bone doesn't look unusual?"

Jiang An slightly shifted the magnifying glass.

"Senior, try looking through the magnifying glass."

Zhang Yean leaned in, observing the tibia through the magnifying glass.

The originally smooth bone suddenly appeared rough.

Zhang Yean said, "There are many tiny holes here?"

"Those are the nutrient foramina for the capillaries which supplied blood to the bone."

"That's not what I was pointing out, though."

"What is it then?"

"Did you notice a bony protrusion at the center of the magnifying glass?"

With Jiang An's guidance, Zhang Yean observed for a while.

She said, "It seems a part of the bone is slightly raised."

"That's a sign of a healing fracture."

Zhang Yean turned and asked, "The bone isn't cracked open, though."

"It's not cracked because the fracture area has healed."

Jiang An continued explaining, "When the human body fractures, callus forms at the fracture site."

"What's callus? Is it like a skin scab?"

Jiang An further explained, "Exactly, similar to a skin scab."

"In the fracture area, the originally smooth bone structure accumulates the callus to aid in healing."

Zhang Yean lowered her head, looked at the bone, and said, "So the fracture has healed; it must have been a long time ago?"

Jiang An said in a low voice, "Based on the healing and repair stages after a human fracture, I deduce this fracture occurred within six months before death."

"The fracture happened within six months?"

Zhang Yean said, "You previously estimated the time of death to be last November."

"Thus, the fracture time should be around May last year."

Jiang An nodded.

"Timed with the fracture's healing on the leg, it does fit the time frame."

Zhang Yean analytically said, "Then should we check hospitals for fracture patients around that time to possibly confirm the deceased's identity?"

Jiang An nodded and said, "That's one route."

"However, this fracture is special."

"Oh? Special?"

Looking again at the tibia Jiang An held, Zhang Yean inquisitively asked, "What do you mean?"

Jiang An answered, "This fracture is in the middle of the left tibia."

"From the healing appearance, it seems to be a wedge fracture."

"A wedge fracture?"

Zhang Yean's eyes widened, full of questions.

"Such fractures often result from impacts in traffic accidents."

"Additionally, given the fracture's distance from the foot, I deduce the lower leg was struck by a car's front bumper."

"This headless woman had a fractured leg due to a traffic accident six months before death."

Then, using the same method, Jiang An examined another skeleton with a magnifying glass.

At noon, Investigation Unit members returned one after another.

Li Jian and Zhang Chao, having returned, sat in the office discussing the morning's investigation.

Zhang Chao said, "Mr. Li, the police investigation this morning yielded no progress."

"Yet, the reconstruction photo of the deceased's head has been posted on community and factory bulletin boards."

"If there are any leads, we should get them promptly."

Li Jian nodded and said, "There's some pressure on our team."

"The deceased worked at a salon but left a year ago."

Zhang Chao quickly asked, "That's great! We can identify her at once."

Li Jian looked grave, taking a couple of drags off his cigarette.

"Unfortunately, it wasn't a legitimate salon."

"She worked there for a year, and no one knew her true identity."

At this point, Zhang Chao and others sighed.

Li Jian said, "However, it indicates the deceased lived here for a considerable time."

"We'll continue to investigate tomorrow; perhaps we can find some clues."

After a long time, he then asked, "Where are Jiang An and Zhang Yean?"

Everyone looked at each other.

Wan said, "When we left, I remember they were in the station."

At this moment, Officer Xiaofang entered with a document.

"Director, please sign for this document."

Zhang Chao received the document, signing while asking, "Xiaofang, have you seen Forensic Expert Jiang An?"

Xiaofang replied, "They're in the 403 office examining the bones."

Immediately, the pen in Zhang Chao's hand slipped.

He asked in shock, "Examining bones?"

Everyone else was equally astonished.

Xiaofang said, "Forensic Expert Jiang An was examining very carefully with a magnifying glass."

Two minutes later, Li Jian, Zhang Chao, and others went to the fourth floor.

When Wan pushed open the door to the 403 office, they saw Jiang An crouched over, conducting an examination.

Zhang Yean held a flashlight, turned toward the entrance, and said, "Mr. Li, you're here."

Li Jian and the others rushed in, glancing at the two sets of White Bone on the floor and seeing Jiang An holding a magnifying glass.

He crouched down and softly asked, "How is it?"

"Any new discoveries?"

Jiang An turned his head and said gravely, "I've found an important clue!"
