Marvelous Mecha

Chapter 776: Support

The Bermuda Galaxy was the scene of exceptionally fierce combat. In the past month, the Normandy Fleet could be said to have been on an unbroken winning streak, taking only five Earth days to fight from the edge of the galaxy to the deep space no man's land between the two great galaxies. Super soldiers played a pivotal role in this battle, as adversaries kept clashing—from the Bermuda border all the way to the Black Devil Border, engaging every time they crossed paths. The current situation was an even 5V5, meaning both the enemy and our forces had five super soldiers. By the numbers, the 55 standoff left no advantage to either side—after all, if you have five super soldiers, we do too. But this seemingly balanced situation was actually highly disadvantageous to the Federation. Indeed, five super soldiers were all the Federation could muster at that point, and originally there should have been ten. However, during the previous operation in Saudi, one was destroyed outright, resulting in the super soldier meant for Cangmu Kuang Qi's never seeing the light of day. This meant that the original ten super soldiers were effectively reduced to nine, and with Roland's departure from the Federation, the count of nine was further trimmed down to eight. In fact, had the Federation managed to keep its number of super soldiers to eight, the situation would not have deteriorated to its current state—after all, at that time, it was 8 against 4, with the Federation having eight super soldiers, and Saudi just four. But following two campaigns in Mardis, Mu Tou was sacrificed, and although Hugo did not perish in combat, the outcome was no different—the inability to pilot a mecha meant the Federation's already precarious combat strength was further reduced by two tenths. To a certain extent, Mu Tou's significance on the battlefield surpassed even Hugo's, as a sniper lurking in the thick of the fray was an existence even top soldiers would dread facing. With Sky Shadow wounded, the remaining six super soldiers were further reduced to five on an already weak foundation. On the other hand, Saudi had constantly been nurturing their strength through combat, maintaining an unbeaten position in successive battles regardless of how many Federation soldiers they encountered. If not for the several interventions by Revenge Shadow Rider, their current situation would undoubtedly be infinitely better. Of course, the current faceoff was still 5 against 5, with the Federation's Ophelia, Angelina, the Haier Brothers, and Dovir. A closer look at these remaining Federation super soldiers would reveal that they were either too young and inexperienced or of an academic bent. Angelina, admittedly a veteran, had only recently entered the White Robe Stage, along with Ophelia. And the rest, although elite, were still a step away from the true ace level. Despite their potential being ahead of their peers, this seemingly negligible gap was, in reality, not so easily overcome. The Haier Brothers' combat prowess was not simply about the rank they held; they had to be present together to unlock their full potential. Even against two or three aces, if they fought together, they could hold their ground; the obvious drawback, however, was that if one brother was absent, they almost ranked at the bottom in one-on-one situations. Naturally, in repetetive operations, the Military Department had considered the overall situation, thus the Haier Brothers had never faced Saudi forces alone, but that did not eliminate the possibility of it happening one day. Looking at Saudi, Jiu Ling was a super ace, Xia Mu a seasoned ace, Mary was an ace in all but name, Hei Feng a newly established ace, and the undead sniper—though not an ace—held a battlefield significance surpassing that of aces, even exceeding them. The comparisons made the disparities clear, and if it hadn't been for the initial appearance of Revenge Shadow Rider, who rendered Xiuluo unable to continue fighting, the current circumstances could have been even worse. Therefore, on the surface, our forces boasted two aces: Angelina, representing the Military Department, and Ophelia, an academy graduate. Nonetheless, the newly promoted White Robe, Ophelia, stood no chance against Jiu Ling, and even Angelina, with her Mental Ability, would be suppressed when faced with Jiu Ling. The only way to suppress Jiu Ling would be for the Haier Brothers to act together, which was clearly not a viable strategy, because once the Haier Brothers engaged Jiu Ling, the battlefield would immediately evolve into 3 against 4, with Angelina, Ophelia, and Dovir up against Hei Feng, Xia Mu, Silver White Sword, and the undead sniper. At that time, the undead sniper wouldn't directly join the fight; instead, he would hide in an unknown spot on the battlefield, the most dreaded potential threat. Thus, the current policy of the Federation was to prefer the X Ability Wielder Angelina being pressured by Jiu Ling over neglecting the sniper. In the early stages of the war, it might have been possible to occasionally see one or two super soldiers acting alone, but not anymore. Every major force was moving in groups—top pilots like those of the Blue Electric Rain were also accompanied by at least one or two elites during missions. Besides the always solitary Revenge Shadow Rider, there was really no second person who preferred to act alone. But now Revenge Shadow Rider was gone, and not just him. Looking back on that grand era—a veritable storm of competition—it was truly a time of beautiful memories.
