The veteran driver drove like a ferocious beast, swift as a ghostly shadow, scaring the living daylights out of the two passengers seated behind him.
When it comes to driving, an experienced driver isn't judged by speed alone, but rather by their grasp and control over the finer details. While riding with an expert at the wheel, the car may be moving fast, yet you'd feel incredibly stable and secure. But with a novice, even if they aren't driving as fast, you'd feel uneasy, that sense of impending disaster is a natural human reaction. And right now, that's exactly how the driver made the two of them feel.
Hugo spoke earnestly, "Driver, please slow down. We're not in a rush. Look at the traffic on the road, it would be bad if there were a scratch or a bump. Safety first, right?"
"Hahaha... Young people are so cautious, but I'm not boasting when I say I know this road like the back of my hand, could even find my way with my eyes closed."
Even Feng Yi was alarmed after hearing this, "Driver, you really shouldn't drive with your eyes closed."
"Of course not," the driver laughed, indicating it was just a joke. "I've been running around all day trying to earn enough for a down payment on a house for my child. It's mealtime, and I'm rushing home to grab a bite, so I've subconsciously sped up a bit."
"Hehe, it's only natural to hurry home for a meal, but safety is paramount. Nothing is more important than your health, especially when you drive for a living and need to be extra cautious."
The driver agreed with Hugo's words and nodded, asking, "Are you two also heading to the Combat Power Tester company for a job interview?"
"Interview?"
"Yeah, a good number of the young people coming from the airport these days are off to interviews at the Combat Power Tester company. If my kid wasn't in school, I'd have wanted to send him there to work too."
Neither of them knew what the working conditions at the Combat Power Tester company were like, as they usually didn't pay attention to these matters. Hugo casually chatted with the driver, inquiring, "What's so good about working there?"
"Hehe, start at ten, finish by three, not a tiring job, and it comes with lots of benefits. It's better than civil service jobs or those internet livestreaming gigs."
Hugo listened with a puzzled expression. Working from ten to three, totaling four hours per day, seemed within the realms of normal working hours in any country, especially in this digital age where most manual labor is replaced by machines, leaving humans to focus more on mental work and time consumption.
Seemingly noticing Hugo's confusion in the rearview mirror, the driver added, "The key thing is the high salary, especially the year-end bonus. I've heard that long-standing employees could earn enough in bonuses at year's end to buy a studio apartment outside of Maraca. Unlike me, running a broken-down car all day long just to scrape together a down payment for my kid's place."
Hugo remarked, "I hear the property prices here are sky-high. Based on a regular income, even in Maraca's outer ring, a month's salary could, at most, purchase a couple of square meters."
"Exactly, you tell me," the old driver became more animated as he discussed the topic and seemed to find common ground with Hugo. "But what can we do about it? It's all for the kids, for the next generation. You can't let the young ones lose at the starting line, especially when the level of education here is the best in the world. There's no choice but to give it our all with the life we've got."
The driver's words were tinged with the bitter realities of life. As the economic capital of the world, it wasn't just the Atlan Federation sending their children here – including the Silver Alliance Rekart, the Empire of Bergheide, anyone with resources saw it as their top choice.
This old driver had small, single-lidded eyes and had the look of an honest person, chubby with an amiable and approachable demeanor. Yet, as he talked about these matters, he became more aggrieved and heartbroken until his eyes even seemed moist…
But even after Feng Yi and Hugo exited the maglev, they did not leave an extra dime for the driver.
That… that was rather inconsiderate.
"Damn, that's all? Little brother, have some empathy for the hard-luck story, couldn't you give a bit more?"
Give your sister more, there wasn't even time for a proper goodbye. Despite the merry atmosphere in the car, once outside, everyone went their separate ways. As Brother Feng would say, anyone who can afford to buy a house here is no fool. Not only does this old guy own a house in Freedom Port, but he's also scrambling to gather a down payment for another one for his son. You might have provided for your child, but could you leave some space for others, huh?
Apart from that, Feng Yi learned of another issue during the trip: the Special Elixir for the WBC Syndrome. He thought it was necessary to ask Blade Warrior about the progress of its development. Was it still in the experimental phase?
The most pressing issue, however, was to find Blade Warrior to treat Hugo. Of course, Feng Yi wasn't sure if Blade Warrior could definitely cure Hugo or restore him to his peak condition, but the implantation of mechanical prosthetics was certainly within reach – that much he could guarantee.
Upon arriving at the specified location, after a not-so-lengthy wait, the identity verification system finally accepted them, and Blade Warrior, along with Yita, came out of the room. She stretched languidly, looking Hugo up and down with a sense of surprise that this stranger had come to this place…
