Marvelous Mecha

Chapter 619: 562

The battlefield was shrouded in gunpowder smoke. In a state of distinct disparity between enemy and friendly forces, forty Federal Army soldiers managed to annihilate nearly a hundred Black Devil Mechas, including one driven by a Red Cloak.

But in the end, the brave soldiers were buried under the rubble. It was an inevitable destiny that came with choosing to be soldiers, a responsibility they all shared. Unfortunately, none of the refugees in the Relief Center survived.

Through the light screen, officers from around the world who bore witness to the battlefield alongside the Federal Army took off their caps in solemn respect.

To the civilians, with such a group of fearless guardians who readily charged to the frontlines, what more could they demand of their country?

Traveling in an uninhabited sandy plain thousands of miles long, Feng Yi was oblivious to everything happening at the Val Temple. However, he felt an ominous sense of unease. He was at such a level that he could feel faint vibrations on the ground, sensing the slightest abnormalities far off.

The direction pointed towards Val Temple. Was it an earthquake or was he just getting anxious? No, earthquakes were scarce in elevated regions. An earthquake occurring just as the concert concluded was too coincidental. Feng Yi took out the tiny dinosaur, Eggy, still inside the Space Crystal to inquire about it.

After a two-second hesitation, Eggy's face showed a seriousness never seen before, saying solemnly, "Something major occurred over there."

"What did you say?" Feng Yi asked, rarely seeing such a serious look on Eggy's face.

"Let's watch this as we move." Eggy emitted two beams of light from its eyes, forming a virtual projection that moved along with Feng Yi...

Shortly thereafter, Feng Yi started to understand the situation. In fact, he had an vague hunch about it when he first saw the projection. Unfortunately, he had already covered many hundreds of kilometers and even with his speed, he wasn't able to reach the battlefield instantly.

At that moment, he was sprinting quickly in a high frequency leaping motion. Feeling that his speed was still too slow, Feng Yi suddenly exploded with energy, reaching themillion-level Blank Paper Realm. As his foot took off, he was immediately airborne.

This technique was called Air Travel, a high-speed movement technique that Feng Yi had mastered during his cosmic journeys.

"Never use that move. Stop!" Eggy quickly warned that more than 200 satellites were simultaneously locked onto the Val Temple area.

Upon hearing this, Feng Yi was shocked. Had Eggy not reminded him, his identity would have easily been exposed. During sensitive times like these when the Federation urgently needed faith, the exposure of the identity of the Revenge Shadow Rider would strip him of his legendary status. Furthermore, considering the chaos in the sky's chain reaction, this war might not be winnable at all.

Thinking about this, Feng Yi appeared in his black Combat Suit with a motion of his thoughts. Assisted with a face mask and Eggy's help, his identity should be well concealed.

After some time, when Feng Yi finally came, the Black Devil Army was long gone. Black-clad soldiers were now under the satellites' surveillance, and the lenses were also focused on the Black Devil Army's previous location.

As Feng Yi looked around, the destroyed town had lost its former appearance. Some rooms were still spewing black smoke, and bodies were scattered all over the ground. Amongst them were Federal Army and Devil Army soldiers but the majority were innocent civilians.

No survivors from the Relief Center. In other words, Guo Guo might have died. As the drizzle soaked his face, a wave of weakness suddenly came over Feng Yi. He staggered forward a few steps... and saw a sight that further shook him: the body of a Federal Army soldier named Huang Zhennan lying in a pool of blood.

Feng Yi checked Huang Zhennan's breathing and quickly took out a healing herb from the Space Crystal. "Hey, old chap, wake up. Don't sleep just yet."

As if responding to the stimulation, Huang Zhennan's eyelids fluttered open laboriously. He could no longer speak coherently and stuttered, "Didn't expect to see you again. I always missed the days at the Roland frontline."

"Stop talking, swallow this herb. That's an order."

Upon hearing the words "an order," a knowing smile warmed his pale face. "Ha! You were just a lieutenant back then. Remember our duels? We wouldn't be friends if not for them."

"Of course, I remember. How could I forget? To be honest, you're a better shot than I am."

"Tough nut to crack... you finally admit it." His last words were laced with satisfaction just before the fight slipped completely away from him, dropping the IS7 sniper rifle which had followed him for many years from his hands.

Seeing this, Feng Yi urgently lifted Huang Zhennan up, looking for a nearby hospital. "Damn it! I told you to eat the herb! Don't fall asleep on me!"

He tried to wake up Huang Zhennan repeatedly. "Remember how we attacked the Empire camp together, how you always risked your life to save the refugees and were always the first to run forward? But now it's different. You're a Federal Colonel. You've become silent, you've aged, you laugh more, just like a fallen pebble from the mountainside that has been reassigned to the second front-line, your sharp edges smoothed out and your past passion extinguished. But why are you still fighting like this? Answer me?"

Tears welled in Feng Yi's eyes, but he did not stop screaming. "Yes, you are right. In fact, I have always known. You are a true warrior who never gives up. You still want to give off the remaining heat. In the end, you dedicated your youth to the army and left your life on the battlefield."

In the end, Feng Yi didn't have the strength to move anymore. He and Huang Zhennan fell together.

He asked himself, how could he not miss the times they spent together in hardship? Those endless memories took him back to that early summer. Yes, we were at the Roland frontline, struggling day and night. It was because of you we were able to attack the Pross outpost; it was because of your efforts many war prisoners were rescued; you were the one who rescued the refugees and shared your food with them. You were a surefire sniper, who could easily take down a Red Cloak criminal. You were a Federal Colonel who would rather shoulder the heavy duty of a foot soldier at the frontlines. You were once my brother in arms, fighting side by side, but now it's time to bid you goodbye.

Feng Yi's hands were shaking... His heart was burning with fury. Every time he thought of his dashing comrade and his vibrant visage after tactical planning, it felt as if his heart was being tugged at.

Time flies, things and people changed. He had lost too many valuable connections—first Grandpa Lasso, then Sister Guo Guo, and now, a brother who fought with him in the trenches was gone too...

As his trembling hands struggled to pick up the IS7 sniper rifle, which had not yet fired a single shot, the man in black fell silent. Looking at the rapidly chilling body, his face, visible from the camera of the Sky Eye, was of the Revenge Shadow Rider, but it was almost colorless due to the gloominess.

It would be a storm of revenge. The memory of fresh blood would have to be borne by the evil ones completely.

A strong wind came, carrying an aura of dark power. Suddenly, an ominous air of war and murder came, suggesting slaughter to come.

"Roar!"

A roar accompanied by a display of almost abnormal phantom movements caught everyone's attention—the central figure in the screen, clearly in pursuit, was heading straight for the Black Devil Army.
