Marvelous Mecha

Chapter 497: The Warrior from Afar_1

John rode the armored jeep back to the camp, with a persistent feeling of being followed. His years of combat experience made him keenly perceptive, far beyond an ordinary person. However, each time he looked back, there was nothing off about his surroundings, not even a Ghost Shadow. Was he just being paranoid? He shrugged off the strange sensation and the military vehicle went on its way...

Elsewhere in the rainforest, Feng Yi watched from behind dense foliage, his gaze now elsewhere. Once he knew exactly where the resistance was based, things would become easier. He spent the next two days observing the surroundings of the secret camp, and the results not only surprised him.

The secret camp was not so much a resistance army as it was a small tribe. Around 2000 people lived here, with less than a quarter serving as fighters. Their living conditions were extremely harsh, with only wooden houses and green tents serving as shelter. The women there could only eat one meal a day, their yellowing, emaciated skin a testament to their malnutrition. Only the soldiers who fought every day were allowed an extra meal. Food was an incredibly scarce commodity in this camp.

The two things that the resistance soldiers did each day were to scrounge for necessities, and to battle with enemy troops. It took them six hours to venture out and back, all while avoiding imperial soldiers, and bringing back items necessary for survival was risky.

The local civilians overwhelmingly supported these rebels, brave warriors who stood for equality. Some of them were escaped slaves, some were farmers unable to afford the tax, and others came from colonies or slums. With the clean and honest reputation of the resistance army, they were able to hold out in their struggle.

However, it was an undeniable fact that these people lacked effective combat strength. Through several days of observation, Feng Yi had come to know the approximate number of their military resources: five mobile suits, including four Sha Meng and one Land Terminator Mark II, twenty armed jeeps, seven tanks, and countless light weapons.

One day, an unexpected guest was brought to the secret camp bound in ropes by the sentries. It was Feng Yi. John looked at him but saw no fear on his face, as if the situation had nothing to do with him. This only made him suspect Feng Yi more.

John scanned Feng Yi with his cold eyes and then demanded: "Civilians never come here. Tell me, what's your name, where are you from, and what are you doing here? Don't try to lie, or else..." As he spoke, John tightened his grip on his gun, as if warning him not to provoke him.

Feng Yi casually glanced around. He saw children playing in the distance and women looking at him with worried eyes and fully armed soldiers ready for combat at any moment. He said, "My name is Feng Yi, a soldier from the Atlan Free Federation, in a foreign land. The reason I've ventured all this way to be here is to gather resistance forces to counter Saudi's growing ambition. From my observations, you are not a well-trained armed collective and do not have the ability to fight against imperial soldiers."

"And then what? You intend to strengthen this army?"

"Exactly."

John laughed upon hearing this, his eyes full of mockery. He found it hard to believe Feng Yi's words, saying, "In the end, are you planning to betray us? Are you just saying this to escape?"

"Hehe, I have never thought about escaping."

"Oh, do you already expect the worst?". John wasn't surprised with Feng Yi's plan in mind but didn't anticipate such a response from Feng Yi who said,"No, you're too weak. I could escape whenever I want if I wished."

As he finished speaking, the ropes binding Feng Yi turned into dust. This wasn't the result of struggling. There was no struggle. Everything happening before him felt unreal.

Seeing this, John's heart tightened. He had heard legends of X Ability Wielders of such caliber, but they were just that- legends. Yet, here was one right in front of him. His special power allowed him to unbind ropes without moving a muscle. Wondering what other abilities the man had, John worried about the consequences if he carelessly let such a man go. John, being decisive, shot at Feng Yi without hesitation.

The gunshot immediately put the entire secret camp on guard. The camp went silent, every eye watching this unfold. The bullet was caught and spinning at high speed between Feng Yi's fingers. As the bullet fell to the ground, John was taken aback, his forehead beading cold sweat...

What did a 7.62 caliber mean in reality? At such a distance in battle, everything blurs, you hit what you aim at. One should not be beguiled by the Hollywood depictions of gunfights. Fictional heroes can talk tactics, romance, and pull off miraculous escapes. Few survive a direct hit from a 125mm shell, let alone the shockwave, even in the vicinity. Fragments of the shell could turn a man's internal organs into mush.

Why else are battle-hardened veterans so tough? They know that not even a shell hole can protect from a shockwave, let alone what's happening right now. John was completely taken aback, but he tried to control his emotions and said: "Who... who are you really?"

Feng Yi smiled and said, "I am me. A soldier of the Atlan Federation. Now, I have a special mandate from the federation. For a noble mission; for gathering forces for the resistance; for protecting the home that needs to be protected; for upholding inviolable dignity, I bravely infiltrated Saudi territory in secret. But no matter how strong I am personally, when facing the imperial forces, I am nothing. This secret camp, although it has 2000 people, has fewer than 500 true fighters, and even fewer mobile suits. The scant resources here will run out soon."

Having heard this, John had no reason to doubt Feng Yi's intentions. At first, he had his suspicions, but after hearing Feng Yi's explanations and seeing his demonstration, he had nothing to say against his plans. If Feng Yi intended to betray them and inform the imperial army, why would he go through the trouble of coming here to explain everything?

"Warrior, I must apologize for my earlier rudeness. Do you have a plan?" John asked. He suddenly hit his head in frustration, quickly inviting Feng Yi to meet with Elder Duncan, the true leader of this force.
