Marvelous Mecha

Chapter 441: Beat to Death_1

Not a few female soldiers chitchatted during the moving process. Women are notorious for being gossipmongers. They initially talked about their training, family, goals, and dreams, but they managed to turn the conversation around to Instructor Feng.

"Handsome, what's your name? Lend a hand, won't you?"

"Well... I'm Feng Yi. Nice to meet you."

"I don't care if you're Feng Yi or a lost wind, just hurry up. This equipment is heavy."

Feng Yi was speechless, initially planning to familiarize himself with the crew, but no sooner had he gotten started than he was roped into being the errand boy for an unknown female soldier. Well, alright then. In the base, rank didn't matter. He was here during a busy period anyway. Despite his somewhat stern speech at roll call, he knew that taking respite during normal rest breaks is totally fine, so long as training was not hindered.

"By the way, which branch of the God's Thorn are you from?"

"Well, actually, I am not…"

"Never mind. You're out of your depth. Did you know? My granddad is General Albas, impressive, huh? You helped me today, so remember to speak up if you have any problems."

Feng Yi nodded dumbfoundedly, "It seems every female soldier I've encountered was impressive?"

"Hey, boy, what are you trying to imply? That I got here by trading favors? Be careful with your words, they can cut deep. Challenge me if you dare."

"Alright, alright, I surrender." Feng Yi quickly raised his hand in surrender. If he didn't stop her now, there would be no end. He didn't dare to continue this line of interaction with women. It's weird how he always winds up being the bad guy in seemingly peaceful talks.

There was still some time before breakfast, and everyone was unusually cheerful. No one expected the first day here to be a day of rest. After finishing their chores, they usually killed time by playing cards, shooting the breeze, or using the Virtual Combat Machine.

However, on the day of departure, the commander broke shocking news to everyone! The usually teetotal God's Thorn would allow drinking on Mars, but only during rest periods. This was unimaginable in the Capital military district. You could say that every other team could drink, though in secretive sips but God's Thorn was different; its rules were too tight; you weren't even allowed to smoke, let alone drink.

Before long, everyone finished their immediate tasks. On the way to the dining hall, The God's Thorn maintained their traditional manner — they walked briskly, and sat upright. Their military style was very standard.

As soon as the adjutant gave the order to sit, the sprawling dining hall filled with the ceaseless chatter of bowls and chopsticks, creating a percussive symphony. The trained young people not only maintained a high level of discipline, but they also ate impressively quickly; even the slowest girl finished in less than 10 minutes. This was thanks to the tradition passed down through the troops — if you're slow, you'll be left with no food.

After the meal, came free time. Soldiers in groups of three or two chose to familiarize themselves with the geography of Mars. Some walked around to get a taste of this planet with half the gravity of Earth. Under the influence of simulated gravity, there was no discomfort. After eating, it was beneficial to walk and explore. Also, some came out to appreciate the rare scenery on Mars — such barren planets are uncommon in the Northern Galaxy.

Feng Yi found a good spot to relax, buried his face in a textbook – specifically, an 18+ romantic novel. He read and ruminated on something; eventually, he fell asleep. As an instructor, he lacked the far-ranging vision and enlightenment typically associated with his role.

The rest of the soldiers exhibited an unprecedented level of joy and enthusiasm. They finished breakfast and looked forward to lunch. After lunch, they anticipated dinner. In the evening, they could hit the bar for free drinks and have a good chat. Life was good; it was sweet and relaxing. Were they here for intensive training or to enjoy themselves? Remember, a soldier from the God's Thorn had never tasted such sweet life.

However, many veterans of the God's Thorn did not share this sentiment. To be honest, they all had a growing, uneasy feeling. The more relaxed their routines became, the more intense the feeling. Nobody's complaining about physical training and long runs. They're soldiers, after all! But the first day on Mars saw the instructor acting unusually gentle, a definite bad sign.

After a day of blending in, during dinner, newly acquainted comrades started to whisper: "Did you hear? We may be called into action tonight."

Action? What the hell is that? In the God's Thorn, sudden action was commonplace. Three days this, five days that — it wouldn't be strange if you were called to action two or three times a day during intensive training. According to statistics, during the intensive training period, each member of the God's Thorn typically lost around 3-5 kilograms. You could say they were well-fed and well-rested, but their bodies' metabolism was an irreversible process.

"Heh, who cares about the sudden call for action? Only cowards worry about this stuff. Having served for 12 years, I've had more calls to action than holding my gun."

Those who were busy discussing among themselves didn't expect the call to action, rather, who arrived was the long-absent Instructor Feng. As an instructor, there was nothing much to say at this point. To tell the truth, Feng Yi wasn't like those other instructors who were idle and liked to make demands. Rest was just that—rest. It wasn't right to hammer these soldiers day in and day out. Only with a good rest could they face the new day with their best spirit.
