Marvelous Mecha

Chapter 426: Persisting Through Wind and Rain_1

The audience watching the Shadow Rider formation was about to explode. Barely taking a few steps forward, it was struck by lightning, severely damaging its armor. Fortunately, Revenge Shadow Rider emerged unscathed, which was an indication that its individual strength might be enough to resist lightning damage. After all, an individual with power of a certain level can be immune to electrical damage. This is not the case for mecha, but bio-mecha could minimize such damage. This was why Bergheide had been urgently searching for bio-mecha prototypes. To their disappointment, at this moment, there was no bio-mecha prototype on Feng Yi, but only a fully evolved entity lacking only weapons.

Since being struck by lightning, the movements of the Revenge Shadow Rider shown on the light screen seemed a bit hesitant. Then, without hesitation, it advanced forward. The system continually displayed its route choice and the optimal route for the audience in front of the screen. Even if the Revenge Shadow Rider's judgement was not 100% correct, it was nearly there.

But before many steps, another flash of lightning crashed from the sky. At the speed of light, there was no way to evade it. The repeated, intense blows had everyone rooting for the Shadow Rider formation sinking into deep worry. Could it be in danger? No one could tell.

Feng Yi, was also stunned by the lightning strike. It wasn't fatal, but it was uncomfortable, and it caused significant internal damage to the mecha. Struck a few more times, and it would be all over. But the journey had to go on and action needed to be taken. Some lightning strikes could be anticipated with a crisp or loud rumbling just before they occurred.

In response, Feng Yi kept an eye out, deciding to throw his titanium alloy knife into the air as a lightning rod every time he heard thunder. However, there had been no thunder and the Revenge Shadow Rider had managed to progress safely, though clumsily. It was worth noting that the lightning stage posed more dangers than just lightning, including countless hidden dangers like floods, hurricanes, and magnetic storms that disrupted normal machine judgement. But with the C device already broken beyond repair, Feng Yi had to rely on his experience and judgement to respond to all these hazards.

That said, for a pilot at the level of the Revenge Shadow Rider, the sand and rocks flying around in the high-speed winds were no different than bullets. Not only did the Shadow Rider have to adjust its trajectory based on wind speed, but it also had to dodge threats from all directions. Each of its maneuvers could be a lesson in a textbook.

Swish, swish, swish...

The rocks whizzing by were as forceful as bullets, yet the clumsily designed 0001 managed to evade them at the last moment by continuously somersaulting, sidestepping, and rolling. The nearly hundred-level test that even top-tier pilots couldn't complete was successfully tackled by the Revenge Shadow Rider, an impossibility became possible. This disruptive scene was now being broadcast live to audiences worldwide.

In an instant, the 96th level was also cleared. The 97th level was the same as the 96th, but with added virtual opponents. For a warrior at the level of the Revenge Shadow Rider, the introduction of a few virtual rivals, or even the Red Cloak, wouldn't pose a problem. However, in such harsh conditions, his attention, nerve response, fatigue, and stress resistance would all continuously change with the passage of time.

Truth be told, this type of masochistic and twisted test wasn't even considered by the officials to be something someone could complete. Even those from opposing forces unwillingly struck a truce at level 95. Any further would be masochistic, not a challenge. However, the Revenge Shadow Rider was repeatedly challenging people's perceptions. After level 96, it once again surged through level 97, pushing into the 98th level with a bumpy journey.

On his body, numerous wounds appeared from the gusts of wind that brushed past him. His clothes were also soaked in sweat from the exertion. It was undeniable that at this moment, Feng Yi didn't know how much further he could go. Level 98 might be his limit, but he wanted to see where his limit lie. Hence, he didn't intend to give up, even at this point.

The 98th level was a puzzle with no solution. By the time Feng Yi had reached this level, he had forgotten how he completed level 97. If you ask why, the reason is simple. Feng Yi didn't have time to recall his previous experiences and insights. Any negligence would lead to Phantom Knight 0001 being at risk of exploding. But each time he cleared a level, he didn't rest in celebration. Once certain battles commence, they can't take a break. Otherwise, all previous efforts would be wasted. The body's nerve reactions are not always as obedient as we'd like them to be.

The netizens were completely dumbfounded. They had forgotten how this thing moved up to level 99. Not only had they forgotten, Feng Yi himself had also forgotten. By the time he entered level 99, Feng Yi was already in a strange state, somewhat similar to the legendary realm, and with some illusion of subconscious control over the mecha. At least now, the clear thoughts in Feng Yi's mind could sense the changes in his body. These changes often brought about a unity that could only be achieved on reaching the body's limit, it was mysterious but hard to explain.

As obstacles roared towards him, Feng Yi's hands, which were operating the controls, gradually left multiple afterimages. His breathing became increasingly heavy. Although the Revenge Shadow Rider seemed smoother than before, Feng Yi, the pilot himself, felt an unprecedented sense of oppression. It was as if his body was moving along with his subconscious, out of his control.

This wasn't a good sign. Eventually, two completely different voices appeared in Feng Yi's mind. What did he want, victory or defeat? If he desired victory, he could easily achieve it by letting his subconscious control the battle. But if he wanted to have full control over his body, he would inevitably face defeat.

Upon this realization, Feng Yi fell into silence. He suddenly felt as if he didn't know himself anymore. Amidst his introspection, the Revenge Shadow Rider was nearing the end of level 99. He knew that the moment he stepped into level 100, he would certainly fail. Even his subconscious wouldn't be able to help. What puzzled him was why he developed another consciousness. This was completely opposite to the beliefs he had adhered to all his life. Was he afraid? Was he dodging? Was he running away?

This wasn't him. But why...? By the time he reached level 100, the Revenge Shadow Rider was not the same as before. It didn't move, standing still and seemingly gazing at its closed hand without any reaction.

Humph! He was disgusted with himself in his current state! With a snap between his tightly clasped fingers, it seemed as though a mysterious black light had burst from 0001's palm. Feng Yi's eyes suddenly cleared up. "Huh!" A dark power suddenly enveloped his entire body, and in an almost imperceptible void, a psychic coupling magnetic field connected to his brain waves was suddenly severed.

In a brightly lit room, a soft sigh echoed... "It looks like I can't control him in the short term. This person's psychic power is no less than mine. How rare."

At the same time, the silent Revenge Shadow Rider finally let out a ground-shaking roar: "Huh."

Level 100, comprising elements of absolute difficulty from levels 1-99, is a supremely difficult and masochistic level that is impossible for humans to complete. With a large element of randomness, the stage spans over a hundred kilometers. There is no time limit, and successfully piloting the mecha to cover the hundred kilometers would be considered as clearing the level.

It might sound simple, but when facing the myriad elements on the screen, one must admit a hard truth. Without even mentioning one hundred kilometers, you won't even be able to move one kilometer. In this era of electronic warfare, the Revenge Shadow Rider, armed only with a titanium alloy blade and a laser gun, has become the target for millions of monsters. Coupled with the effects of climate, environment, excessive fatigue, and myriad other factors, the chances of the Revenge Shadow Rider winning can only be said to be at an all-time low.

Without wasting time on talk, Feng Yi made his choice in the most direct way. Onscreen, the Revenge Shadow Rider turned into a brilliant light streaking across the battlefield, under a suppressive barrage of fire.

What the people saw was no longer an awkward, slow mecha. It was a mechanical vessel able to channel the power of faith, enduring a staggering 30 times the average gravity, weaving its way through the laser blasts with movements so exaggerated it was mind-boggling painting a picture of breakneck speed and survival against impossible odds.

He did it. Who would have thought the Revenge Shadow Rider would make it to the 100th level? But this level was just the beginning. The enemies he had encountered so far were merely lowly Red Cloak trainees and mock targets — essentially coarse dummies.

As time went by, the conditions surrounding the Shadow Rider became visibly worse. The tranquil and beautiful village transformed into a battlefield and the mock targets turned into a meteor shower raining down from the sky, launching wave after wave of undiscriminating attacks against the Revenge Shadow Rider.

The ground also concealed invisible mines and self-destruct alarms. Nearly all the viewers had stood up. The Revenge Shadow Rider was done for. This was an indiscriminate attack.

The Revenge Rider's Shield moved to intercept an incoming, smaller meteor. With a flicker of its energy blade, it shattered the small meteor, triggering concealed threats hidden in the dark — mines, traps, biochemical weapons, and equipment specifically designed for mecha.

With a swish, the Revenge Shadow Rider spun away, disappearing quickly from the meteor zone. Before he could leave, countless biotic mechas replaced him. This was no longer a number you could express with a simple figure. Each step could squash a cluster of the enemy. In Feng Yi's mind, a horrifying term popped up: 'Beast Tide'.

With an explosive sound, the mecha brutishly crashed into the beast tide, then appeared in a completely different direction at an even faster speed. On this constant shifting battlefield, the Phantom Knight 0001 left trail after trail of afterimages, repelling all attacks with its body.

The battlefield rang out with the clinging, clanging, and booming noises of a rain of bullets. The ceaseless echo of gunfire sounded like a chapter ripped from an epic saga. The laser beams highlighting the serene backdrop, while the roaring of the explosive shells signaled climactic releases, all while a tragic symphony of war and steel was being played out.

Through the large screen display, people also could listen to the constant battlefield information provided by the automated notification system of the Revenge Shadow Rider's C device.

"Successfully evaded."

"Armour not penetrated."

"Ricochet."

"Attack dodged."

"Main gun failed to inflict substantial damage."

"We have withstood the enemy's firepower."

"The enemy failed to penetrate our armour!"

"The bullet has been deflected."

"An excellent dodge."

His maneuvers were unpredictable; his defense was invincible. The driving skills were so stunning that they touched the soul. The distance was tenuous as the artillery slipped past the Shadow Rider. As the rain of bullets covered the screen like a swarm of locusts, what came next was a form of rebirth. It wasn't so much a return as it never left - this was the undefeated legend of the federation.
