Marvelous Mecha

Chapter 283: The Wandering Poet Bai Zhexian_2

Bai Zhexian was rather joyful about it all.

According to him, a construction site in Triangular Star has been plagued with frequent freak accidents - fatalities, even. Initially, people didn't pay much attention to this, but as construction progressed, the accidents became more and more frequent. Of course, there have been attempts to contact him through various channels, but he didn't show up. These tasks were all about timing.

A certain rotund worker had already lost two of his metaphorical 'lights' on his shoulders. If all three 'lights' were snuffed out, the person was finished. This worker was naturally a skeptic. For a while, strange occurrences started to frequently happen around him. He began to experience hallucinations, hearing terrifying noises just outside his hearing range. At first, he didn't pay these any mind, but as time went on, the occurrences grew more and more intense. He would see a clear path ahead, yet suddenly bump into a wall while walking. If a truck happened to be in front, it would mean imminent danger.

This troubled him significantly. He spent a lot of money on medical treatments and fortunetellers but to no avail. Faced with the dilemma that neither modern medicine nor mysticism could resolve his issue, he slowly warmed up to the idea of ending his own life.

Until one day, he encountered a wise man in a pub. In fact, this so-called wise man was none other than Bai Zhexian himself. As a famous poet of his era, Bai Zhexian was quite perceptive. He spotted the darkness in the worker's forehead - an indication of a haunting spirit - and casually warned him to be careful before leaving.

Bewildered, the worker immediately sought information about Bai Zhexian.

Bai Zhexian told the worker that he might face some misfortune soon and to take care of himself.

Upon hearing this, the worker immediately collapsed in tears and knelt on the ground, begging for help to save his life.

The complex world is full of connections and cause and effect- inevitable destinies. Fate brought the yin object to the worker, and fate also brought Bai Zhexian into his life. All is destined, just in different ways.

Bai Zhexian swung his folding fan forcefully and then tapped the worker's forehead gently, asking him how he felt. Was he feeling better?

The worker claimed that he indeed felt much better, the heavy feeling in his head was gone.

Bai Zhexian told him to go home, and he would visit him in the evening. For now, he didn't want the worker to cling to him as he still had things to do.

The worker, not understanding but knowing he had met a wise man, conversed for a few more sentences before keeping quiet.

From a metaphysical perspective, the worker was suffering from a case of "Ghost Covering Eyes". The dark miasma presented on his forehead indicated the presence of an entity. With a minor trick, Bai Zhexian temporarily alleviated his condition, keeping him safe for a while. Simultaneously, he left a mental power mark on the worker's forehead, allowing him to locate the worker through his power.

That night, Bai Zhexian appeared at the worker's house.

Upon seeing Bai Zhexian, the worker fell to his knees without a word and begged him to save his life.

Bai Zhexian indicated that there was no need for such formalities, and all would be clear once they entered the room. However, upon entering the room, Bai Zhexian's eyes could not help but narrow. The room was not very large, a suite covering no more than 60 square meters. Oriented towards the sun and void of any geomantic curse, it should have been difficult for ghosts to inhabit such a place. The only explanation was the relentless haunting of a spiteful ghost or a tormented soul of a suicide victim, repeating its death over and over.

Bai Zhexian circled the small room numerous times, seemingly wandering aimlessly but actually utilizing the Heavenly Gang steps. The strike of his folding fan channeled the moon's brilliance, banishing any evil. Suddenly, a note echoed throughout the room, the final note of the Demon-breaking Chant strummed by Bai Zhexian. However, the room remained calm, showing no signs of abnormal disturbance.

This was also a puzzling point for Bai Zhexian, the situation appeared to be getting complicated. He had said the room should not be affected, there should be no link to whatever was transpiring. Furthermore, he failed to notice anything unusual about the fat man, who appeared to be just like any ordinary person. The only odd element was that despite his poor fate manifested in dark, unlucky energy, Bai could detect no ghosts or spirits on him.

That night, Bai questioned him about various aspects of his life, including his family relations and whether any unusual events had occurred recently. The man, very forthright, admitted that there were none. However, a multitude of problems had arisen at his construction site.

At this point, Bai Zhexian began to pay serious attention to the series of events that had unfolded at the construction site. To the uninitiated, the site appeared no different from any ordinary construction zone. However, when looked down upon from above, one might notice that the construction site bore a striking resemblance to a coffin. Futhermore, the coffin was not a yin object, but rather a device to suppress yin objects.

Regrettably, the commencement of construction work implied the disruption of feng shui. Only after probing deeper did Bai learn that aside from the huge coffin being excavated at the center of the site, four other identical coffins were being dug out at intervals of several hundred meters. This formation, referred to as a pentagram, was made up of these coffins. Perhaps, Freedom Port should have originally been known as "Five Coffins"?

Of course, everyone has their own version of the story. It could all be a strange coincidence or the result of a mysterious fate. The best course of action would have been to replace the five coffins back in their original locations as a deterrent. But the coffins had been damaged by the excavator during construction, and they were just empty shells.

At this point, replacing them would make no difference. After fully understanding the situation, Bai realized the gravity of the problem. It was not that other scholars from the mystic guild hadn't noticed the crisis, but rather, once the coffins were damaged beyond repair, it was very difficult for ordinary people to suppress them without making matters worse.

Even for a well-versed poet like Bai Zhexian, this pentagram formation was inherently risky. They were bearing the consequences of somebody else's past actions. Who would have imagined that such an error in excavation could lead to so many accidents, causing over a hundred casualties? Rather than terrifying, this place would be better termed as cursed. Any unlucky soul who encounters it, or inadvertently gets embroiled, would struggle to free themselves. Even Bai Zhexian had to tread carefully when dealing with curses.

Mary was like a newly appointed official, trying to make a mark. Solving this issue was her first task upon joining the federal citizenship. Of course, Bai didn't know about this. He simply stumbled upon the cause and effects of the issue and decided to accept the task from the Reward Guild.

According Bai Zhexian, Feng Yi had an extraordinary air about him — fiery and imposing. He exuded a terrifying aura that overshadowed Bai's. He seemed like someone who had been on a battlefield, killed people, and seen blood. Ghosts and spirits would not dare approach him. It's such a pity he didn't understand mystic arts, otherwise, he could have asked him to be partners in this deal.

The 500 honor points were just a side benefit. The federal government would also offer a handsome reward. However, such affairs were not easily understood by ordinary people — even if he were to tell them, few would believe him. After all, their extraordinary existence was already beyond their comprehension.

Feng Yi, after listening for a long time, was still unsure about what was real and what wasn't. The poet's casual exterior hid a surprising sense of responsibility. Although Bai's clean white shirt was discolored and grubby, his demeanor was spotless and pure. His disposition reminded him of Lasso, the hermit. He seemed to traverse above the mundane life, leaving quite the impression on people.

After taking a hefty swig of his drink, Feng Yi made his proposition: "Perhaps Brother Bai would consider joining the Reward Guild?"

"What benefits does it come with?" Bai Zhexian asked, taking a sip of his own.

"Do you think double the honor points sounds appealing? And you will enjoy the treatment as an elder with monthly allowances."

Damn! Even though his own movements were unpredictable, he couldn't refuse the benefits that were right in front of him. With a snap of his fingers, Bai Zhexian accepted the deal. His acceptance, however, coincided with another question from Feng Yi that left him pleasantly surprised.

Feng Yi was curious to know how many volumes the Jungle Traps series, which was hard to find online, had published so far and if he could get him a handwritten copy.

From surprise to delight, Bai Zhexian expressed, "You, my friend, I will definitely keep." As they exchanged books and goods, laughter filled the air, signaling the beginning of a mutual understanding.
