Marvelous Mecha

Chapter 229: Place a Bet_1

The surprise was so sudden that at this moment Augustins still found it hard to believe everything shown on the screen. The Courageous, though a notable recent model from the federation, was just average compared to frontline mechas from other countries, and nowhere near the exclusive standards of Jiu Ling's model.

Whether it was control, stealth, armor, detection range, power system, acceleration and steering, terrain adaptability, equipment configuration, and in every other respect, there was a world of difference compared to the Devil Angel. Yet, it was this very mecha that defeated the Devil Angel. Believe it or not, but Augustins was having doubts.

Without a doubt, Saudi had lost against Jiu Ling and the latter's defeat would have a domino effect on the third defensive line. In other words, even if Jiu Ling was expected to have a psychological deterrence effect by being stationed at the second line, the third line could not be easily captured. This result was so unexpected that even Feng Yi himself had not foreseen it.

What a wildcard from the federation! When the general asked Feng Yi on how he managed it, to his surprise, Feng Yi simply said he didn't know. He felt the Devil Angel was too terrifying and he could not evade it, so he frantically started mashing buttons out of fear and somehow ended up winning. And that was it.

Most didn't know what to make of Feng Yi's explanation; with their limited understanding, his story seemed incredibly hard to buy, making them suspect he was simply telling tall tales.

No matter what others believed, Jiu Ling couldn't believe it. Pulling off the kind of attack Feng Yi did would require countless complicated commands, far beyond just randomly mashing buttons. After all, even a single error in command input could create irreversible safety risks, and the system's C device would forcibly interrupt the operation to reset itself.

Of course, it's not to exclude two possibilities. One, the commands were automatically inputted by brainwaves. But this feature was assuredly not present in the Courageous model, and not even her Devil Angel had this function.

Second, it could be a mere stroke of luck. Jiu Ling was certain that his opponent had inputted at least dozens of commands in that instant. In other words, the probability of success was the equivalent of raising 1 to the power of several tens, but of course, this was all in hindsight.

Augustins was now deeply troubled. "Blanche, what exactly is that kid's background?"

Blanche simply smiled, "General, you've asked this three times already. During the Wind Thunder phase, his performance in the mecha aspect was pretty average, and nothing notable."

"That may be true, but what's your opinion on him?"

"If it's gold, it's bound to shine. Since it's not shining, he must be hiding something."

"Ah! That clever boy." Augustins sighed deeply. Dealing with Feng Yi was complicated; if he said he wildly pressed anything, then that was it, whether it was true or not.

Indeed, Blanche had already received news about Feng Yi from the Wind Thunder and relayed the information to Augustins. Both of them had a good laugh; that cheeky kid was both cunning and tough.

Successfully capturing the third line coupled with Saudi taking a heavy blow, ideally, they should take this opportunity to break the second line as well. But the two lines were too far apart, and extending the battlefront over time would only slowly drain their morale.

Due to inadequate preparation, in this blitzkrieg, Augustins had not considered defeating the enemy in one blow, let alone have a subsequent strategic plan. He had simply simulated the optimal casualty rate.

So, all he could do was abandon the plan to continue breaching and instead gave his soldiers a two-day break to maintain their high spirits.

The young solider who'd been torn in half had become today's number one hero. His bravery and fearlessness earned him a third-class medal for bravery which Blanche was to award in the absence of the general. The atmosphere at the camp full of silly old men was electric, especially when a beauty like Blanche herself was to hang the medal on you.

Poor Feng Yi had gained nothing besides praise from the old men. As the general said, he didn't even know what to give him. Whether Feng Yi won by luck or was just acting dumb, the fact that he managed to take down a Red Cloak elite was no small achievement. Forget about giving him anything, just report it to the Solar System Presidential Office.

However, the young solider who had earned the medal did not seem overly joyous. When Blanche asked if he was feeling unwell, he said no but didn't give a specific reason. Blanche didn't probe further and simply asked him to recuperate before swiftly leaving the room.

But the brothers knew the reason. The Revenge Shadow Rider hadn't come online for a long time, and as a die-hard fan, one could guess what was bothering him. Some tried to console him, "Bro, today's Friday. Maybe Shadow Rider will come online."

"Hmm, hope so." He just laughed.

Everyone was trying to console him. As the sergeant major, Feng Yi naturally had to do his part. He told the new soldier not to worry, assuring him that the Revenge Shadow Rider would definitely come online that day and even dared to bet on it.

While words of comfort were fine, there was no need to go to such an extreme. The greater the hope, the greater the disappointment. Some people immediately wanted to bet against Feng Yi.

As the sergeant major, he couldn't just back down from his words. So, he took up the bet. With their dull lives at the battlefront, a little bet was the only entertainment they could have. Without a second thought, Feng Yi staked everything he had.

Seeing this, everyone was shocked and all tensed up in fear of losing even their undergarments. Someone shouted, "Are you serious?"

"I am, I am." Life on the front line was all about surviving today and seeing tomorrow. Feng Yi seemed to have an air of detachment about him, as if he confronted the harsh reality of war with an open mind.

"I'll bet with you."

"Hold on, count me in."

"Me too!" Feng Yi was like a fat sheep ready to be slaughtered.

The wounded young soldier tried to dissuade him, but Feng Yi not only ignored his warning, but also dragged the bedridden into his bet too. He proclaimed that as two heroes, they should share their fortunes and misfortunes. If the young soldier had no money, Feng Yi would cover the bet for him.

Everyone was left speechless. However, it was the weekend, so there was some possibility that Revenge Shadow Rider might come online. But the probability was slight.

Once he was back in his room, Feng Yi immediately snatched the storage capsule from Eggy. He pulled out the combat machine, connected to the internet, and sent a message straight to Hans.

By now, Hans had been promoted to regional manager. Before, Hans was not well-liked, and everyone thought he was a fool. But now, the higher-ups in Star Wars had a high opinion of him because of the Revenge Shadow Rider.

Walking in his luxurious office, Hans, puffing on a cigar, was taken aback by the message. His sudden stumble and shock also caused his pretty secretary to jump in fright, as she had never seen such a flustered side of him.
