"Thanks to you, maybe we'll be safe," Amelia gave Feng Yi a deep look, her hand sliding gently over his, before she turned and walked away.
What Feng Yi couldn't understand was why this so-called goddess of Yingland was acting so unfazed, "Wait, you're too calm, aren't you scared?"
She paused and turned her head slightly, a shallow smile spreading across her lips, "Fear can't solve any problems, can it?"
Feng Yi had a sudden realization. Though Amelia's voice had been barely audible and he had not heard her clearly, her faint smile, demeanor and speech were exactly like a memory etched in his mind.
Amelia tossed her hair back casually before heading toward the Liquid Buffer Cabin without looking back.
The liquid buffer was transparent blue with high oxygen content and excellent adhesion. While submerged in it, one could breathe freely via oxygen bubbles. Lying in this liquid could also counteract acceleration over 100G, protecting people from any harm. As for higher gravity situations, it was hard to predict. This protective feature was something civilian spacecraft lacked.
With the ticking of the clock, officers started rushing into the Liquid Buffer Cabin in less than two minutes. Old Li was the fastest, as if he was desperately trying to find himself a good tomb. After making a prayer gesture, he plunged into the liquid and fell asleep instantly.
Four minutes later, only four people were left in the head cabin: Captain Kenneth, two navigators, and Feng Yi.
The navigators stayed because, once the acceleration was over, they would be awakened with special equipment to try to control the shuttle to escape the gravitational pull of the Black Hole. This process was fraught with uncertainties; they didn't even know if they could survive the acceleration. However, why Feng Yi chose to stay confused the other three.
The Captain asked, "Feng Yi, is there something else?"
"My physique should be able to withstand 20 times the gravity. I've also learned some navigation skills. I hope you can wake me up when the time comes."
The Captain seemed unsure upon hearing this. He stroked his glasses and asked again, "Are you sure? Remember that we only have three waking devices."
"I'm sure." Feng Yi nodded firmly.
Giving the current emergency situation, there was no time to test Feng Yi's tentative skills. Everyone was familiar with Feng Yi, so the Captain reluctantly conceded, "Alright, I trust you."
He then handed over his own waking device to Feng Yi.
One of the navigators swiftly input a series of commands into the auto-running system, and the four of them rushed into the Liquid Buffer Cabin. Twenty-seven seconds after their entry, a Bizarre electronic sound echoed in the silent shuttle.
"Acceleration countdown, ten, nine, eight, three, two ..."
With the end of the countdown, the lights in the shuttle suddenly went out, leaving only the safety lights flashing incessantly. Under a strong impetus, the shuttle turned into a beam of light with noises reverberating inside it as objects flew towards one end of the hull.
Twenty minutes later, the shuttle under frantic acceleration had increased its speed to subluminal, moving in the direction of the Black Hole.
Following a stinging sensation, a dew-like surge of electricity suddenly jolted Feng Yi awake. Realizing this was the interior of the shuttle, Feng Yi quickly vacated the Buffer Cabin even though his body felt somewhat uncomfortable. The continuous strong shaking was hard for him to adjust to. He stumbled over to the electronic door, typed in a series of passwords, causing the cabin door to slowly part in the middle.
The interior of the shuttle was pitch-black, and apart from the safety lights, Feng Yi was unable to see anything. Using the faint light, he struggled to make his way into the head cabin.
In fact, Feng Yi didn't know anything about navigation. However, he had a compelling reason to stay.
As for why, it was simple. Chances were high that the two navigators might not survive, and even the outcome for the Captain's body was uncertain. As he had guessed, the two navigators did not wake up with him. They most likely would not...
Of everyone present, Feng Yi was most likely to survive. Despite lacking any navigation experience, if he had Eggy, the results may even surpass those of any other navigator.
At this moment, the atmosphere within the shuttle was exceptionally eerie, eerie enough to make one feel intimidated. It was a sense of unutterable loneliness and despair. If the shuttle fell into the singularity, these people would forever be separated from the world.
Feng Yi discovered that their current predicament wasn't as predicted. The shuttle hadn't escaped the Black Hole's gravitational pull nor fallen into the singularity. Instead, it was continuously orbiting the Black Hole like a satellite...
Now, the escape velocity of the shuttle wasn't enough to be torn apart by the Black Hole. However, it also couldn't escape it. It seemed to have struck a delicate balance with the Black Hole's gravitational pull. In hurry, Feng Yi took out Eggy.
"Boss, where are we? I feel something is wrong, no, very wrong."
"You're right, we're on the edge of a Black Hole."
"Damn it, are you joking with me?" As soon as Eggy's radio wave connected with the Intelligent Brain, the little guy instantly froze, "Boss, why are we here?"
Feng Yi briefly explained what had happened, "You're able to control the shuttle, right?"
"Yes, but how do we get out of here?" Despite Eggy's intelligence being on par with a child's, it was well-versed in standard theory but could not come up with a solution.
Feng Yi said, "There is a way, though I'm not sure if it will work. Check how much more we can increase our velocity."
Two seconds later, Eggy provided a detailed answer, "The velocity can be increased by 9.985273% at most, which will take approximately one day. This is the ultimate sum of the remaining energy of the shuttle for acceleration."
"So you mean, if we had more energy, we could continue accelerating?"
"Yes, but…"
"But what?"
"Obviously to escape. Our distance from the Black Hole is constantly decreasing."
"Damn it, why didn't you say this earlier?" Feng Yi groaned, "Ok, accelerate now, quickly."
"We're accelerating. What should I do next?"
"You know what a whirlpool is, right? My plan is to use centrifugal force to approach the Black Hole and then fling the shuttle out of the gravity well. It's a very precise calculation and the last resort. I need you to push the shuttle to its maximum speed while still keeping enough energy for it to return. Otherwise, even if we escape the gravity well, we'll be pulled back by the Black Hole once we've exhausted our energy."
Eggy had no objections and completely agreed with the plan. The navigator said the ferry could increase its speed to 9.985%, as the remaining small decimals would consume a large amount of energy. This increase would only take 2 hours.
Two hours later, the shuttle was still unable to escape its restraints. The limit on speed could not be broken, and all they were really consuming was time.
