Marvelous Mecha

Chapter 210: Being Played_1

Old Li comforted them, "There is no need to worry too much.

Our fates are predetermined. Though this route is slightly unstable, there have not been significant accidents yet.

Space transportation is fraught with many unknowns and human understanding of the universe is far too one-sided. Just take it easy."

Old Li's half-vague, half-forceful remarks gave Feng Yi a quite startle, but after thinking it over, he relaxed.

"Listening to him drone on is even more tiring than playing a few rounds of Star Wars in my cabin." thought Feng Yi.

They had half an hour before the space shuttle completely left the signal range of Alpha and performed a Space Jump.

That was plenty of time to play a game.

Without feeling too rushed, Feng Yi went back to his cabin and made a cup of tea.

Just as he was about to play Star Wars, he felt a slight tremor from within the shuttle.

This disturbance was pretty subtle, only someone with his sensitive perception would have noticed it.

Suddenly, the screen showed a 'network disconnected' alert.

He logged out and tried logging in again, only to see the same message after about two minutes.

Despite several attempts, the longest he managed to stay logged in was five minutes.

Thinking that the issues were resolved, he tried again only to be disconnected in less than a second.

Suddenly, Feng Yi recalled what Old Li had said.

"Could it really be a problem with the route? If so, that would be so uncanny."

Feng Yi took Eggy, who was sleeping soundly, out of the Space Crystal and explained the situation to him.

He asked Eggy to check what was going on.

After observing for a few minutes, Eggy's expression turned serious.

"There seems to be a subtle counteracting interference.

It seems to be an effect of the gravitational waves of a red giant star and a Black Hole."

"Shouldn't this be classified as a normal phenomenon in the universe?"

"I am unsure.

I can only sense slight interference from the gravitational waves to the shuttle through sixth-dimensional speed.

Under such interference, the Intelligent Brain is unable to accurately correct the navigation data, and we might deviate from our current route."

Feng Yi was stunned, "Can the deviation data be calculated?"

"Based on the frequency and duration of the shuttle's trembling, I can get a rough estimate.

But I cannot give an accurate conclusion.

We're like a floating bottle in the sea, oblivious to the external changes.

We can only speculate."

"I see." Feng Yi shook his head, not too worried about minor deviations in the coordinates.

Often times in interstellar travel, the coordinates need continual adjusting.

But what Old Li said did give him some trepidation. Clearly, many things in space were unpredictable.

Dying on a battlefield was one thing, but dying here was a different matter entirely.

Feng Yi no longer felt like playing Star Wars and went straight to sleep.

There were no worries that couldn't be forgotten after a good sleep.

And so, he lay down and went to sleep, with the baby dinosaur resting on his belly.

The shuttle was continually accelerating... Finally, when it was about to perform the jump, a tremor echoed throughout the space shuttle.

The rubber dinosaur, like a ball of flesh, tumbled off the bed and hit the door with a 'bang.'

The baby dinosaur seemed unfazed.

It glanced left, glanced right, then jumped back onto the bed and continued sleeping.

Soon after, both man and dinosaur were jolted awake by the alarm.

Feng Yi immediately told Eggy to take cover in the Space Crystal, left his cabin, and saw that the space shuttle was a chaotic mess.

Many crew members were running back and forth in the hallway.

"Hey, what happened?"

"It's a big problem." The man hurriedly left a sentence and rushed towards the control room.

Feng Yi still didn't know what was going on.

Under such circumstances, he probably wouldn't be much help.

Even though he knew some DIY repair methods which might be more convenient than those of the professionals, the problem probably wasn't with the shuttle itself, or it wouldn't be this chaotic.

"Old Li, what's the situation?" Feng Yi found Old Li. If it was a technical issue or other difficult problem, maybe he and Eggy could help.

"It's unclear at the moment. Those crew members only said there was a malfunction during the jump, and many of the electronic instruments are not displaying correctly. As for the specific cause, we'll have to wait for more information."

Feng Yi nodded: "I know a little about some makeshift repair methods, I might be able to help in a pinch. I'm going to sleep, don't forget to call me if you need anything."

Hearing this, Old Li's eyes lit up. He knew that many master craftsmen came from the grassroots. Although their theoretical knowledge might not be up to a trainee's level, their practical skills are definitely better than those theorists. He said, "Are you a local mechanic? Do you have any knowledge about warships?"

Feng Yi shook his head helplessly, "Most of my experience had been with mecha hardware. I've seldom delved into spaceship malfunctions. During the few times I had to, do you know what I found?"

"What's that?"

"That they're all the same."

"Hahahaha..." Old Li laughed heartily, "Boy, that's a bold statement. Fine, if there's a problem later, I'll call you first. Go and get some sleep."

Feng Yi shrugged, and was about to return to his cabin when he heard a mockery of his behavior, "Tsk tsk, what a carefree man. You can still sleep in this terrifying environment. Aren't you nervous at all?" Amelia said with a naughty smile and a gloating face.

Who wouldn't be nervous in this situation? Feng Yi was no exception. Although he was naturally optimistic and able to go with the flow, the problem was that Amelia was onboard the same shuttle. But this woman was standing by his door, hands on hips and looking completely unperturbed.

Amid this emergency, Feng Yi ignored the mockery and asked, "Do you know what the problem is?"

"The direction of the Space Jump was off, and we probably entered a region of disordered magnetic fields, causing many of these momentary malfunctions in many electronic devices. The chances of this happening aren't even one in a hundred. It's only incidentally mentioned in textbooks. That's why many navigators usually overlook the possibility of strong magnetic fields."

As expected of Amelia, she quickly made an effective judgment.

If the electronic equipment fails, we should switch to using backup navigation equipment. Feng Yi said:

"You should tell the captain about this, instead of coming here to taunt me."

Amelia retorted: "Are you scared?"

This question caught Feng Yi off guard. Who wouldn't be anxious about this? Life and death can be lighter than a feather or heavier than a Mount Tai, and of course, he didn't want to die for nothing. His answer was straightforward, "Of course I'm scared."

Hearing that, Amelia thought for a moment, stepped into Feng Yi's space, and he felt a fragrance breeze. She leaned closer to his ear and said in a low, deliberate voice, "But...scared...doesn't...help..."

Feng Yi had a feeling of being played and looked at Amelia with complex eyes.

Amelia seemed quite satisfied with Feng Yi's facial expression. She wore a slight smile, "The strong magnetic field in the universe usually won't last long. I was just scared you earlier, but isn't there a feeling of surviving a disaster?"

Damn! This... woman is clearly playing tricks on him. Knowledge about the universe at this level usually belonged to graduate students. Feng Yi was speechless. He was self-taught and had never had formal education, so of course, he wouldn't understand these things.
