Marvelous Mecha

Chapter 1065: Inner Desire_2

This is the greatest fear for every frontline soldier. On the battlefield, their primary concern isn't death—it's whether they'll have a good commander.

As the saying goes, "A brave soldier fights alone; a brave commander leads an entire battalion." If your superior is an incompetent fool, even the best elite troops can be completely ruined under his command. Conversely, under the leadership of a peerless general or an unparalleled talent, even a mediocre unit can be transformed into a force with the spirit of champions.

Soldiers aren't truly unafraid of death; it's their trust in their commander's tactical abilities that allows them to entrust their fate to such hands. But to take control of one's fate ultimately conjures a timeless saying: "A soldier who doesn't aspire to be a general is not a good soldier." Only by becoming a general can one possess the power to turn the tides.

Across the world, every soldier has heard these words, yet only a rare few ever rise to such heights.

Thus, soldiers don't necessarily expect to become generals themselves; rather, they long for a good commander to lead them.

As a high-ranking commander, you may be remembered through history's ages or forever disgraced. The higher the position, the heavier the responsibilities. Each order must undergo countless simulations and assessments based on the evolving situation.

Resulting either in crushing defeat or immortal glory.

Why do Federation soldiers yearn so fervently to join the Scorching Flame Corps and hold Feng Yi in such reverence? This desire surpasses their admiration for Greedy Wolf. It certainly isn't as simple as official propaganda, nor is it merely about his numerous extraordinary battlefield achievements, or solely because of Feng Yi's unique status.

It's because Feng Yi was once a soldier himself. He understands the struggles of every soldier; he has walked the path that all warriors tread. His shadow overlaps with each soldier's own, making him a source of pride for them. Feng Yi's current stature is built through sheer determination from the very grassroots level. He possesses the courage of a soldier, the aura of a warrior, and the toughest of backbones.

This is the fundamental difference between Feng Yi and other commanders. It's for this reason that, when faced with missions, Feng Yi always prioritizes the lives of his soldiers.

Without confronting the threat of death, without enduring the baptism of artillery fire, one can never truly comprehend the despair of being in the thick of it. Such experiences are beyond the grasp of most high-ranking commanders, who often fail to understand or empathize. Their considerations focus on completing tasks at minimal costs to secure promotion opportunities or mechanically executing orders.

But Feng Yi is different. He is willing to risk his own life, charge into the battlefield, and penetrate enemy ranks to save a soldier. As a general, this clearly isn't part of Feng Yi's responsibilities. Yet, he is who he is—a unique national hero who grew from soldier to general.

Soldiers respect such leaders from the depths of their hearts. What reason could frontline brothers have to hesitate in entrusting their lives to such a dependable figure and fighting alongside him to establish their dominance? Under Feng Yi's leadership, his team has never disappointed the nation, the people, or their fellow soldiers.

As a human being, he has personal motives—everyone does. But even those motives are cherished by his troops, because he stands up for them. What soldier wouldn't dream of following a leader who protects their comrades through thick and thin?

At first, Zhang Xiaobo didn't understand these things. He only wished to join an ordinary Space Fleet, find some mundane job, and occasionally pilot a mecha to fulfill a childhood dream. That would have suited him just fine.

For this reason, he specifically asked Feng Yi out for a drink. Rumor had it that Emily was stationed in the Normandy Fleet, which wasn't on the frontline battlefield. Reluctantly, Feng Yi agreed to introduce him to Amelia, though he made no promises as to the outcome.

In the end, Zhang succeeded. He joined the Normandy Fleet, proving that Feng Yi indeed carried great influence.

During his time at the Mars military base, his excellent training results caught Amelia's attention.

Zhang Xiaobo recalled how young he had been then. Upon meeting the young female soldier, he couldn't resist showcasing his Gundam skills—and before he knew it, he became famous. As an advanced pilot, the Normandy Fleet wasn't short on talent, but since the fleet hadn't yet reached the frontline and lacked any Red Cloak operatives, Zhang was temporarily appointed as a mecha instructor.

Of course, Zhang wasn't the sole instructor—Elvis was also involved.

Although Elvis hadn't undergone the intense special training at the Mars base, he had studied closely with Feng Yi for a long time back on Earth's Capital Planet. As a result, Elvis wasn't a solitary force in the Normandy Fleet; rather, the fleet also had Elvis as a formidable counterpart to Zhang.

The two refused to concede to one another, and during this period of mutual competition, their skills and familiarity with mechas rapidly increased. In less than two years, both successfully reached the threshold of Red Cloak prowess from their initial advanced pilot rank.

When the fleet finally went to war and reached the frontline, their first battle saw Zhang Xiaobo and Elvis achieve outstanding military success.

They hadn't even realized that their strength had grown so significantly. Training was one thing, but facing the enemy in direct combat was a completely different experience.

Driven by these achievements, the higher-ups conducted a thorough evaluation of their capabilities and confirmed that they possessed strength nearly on par with Red Cloak operatives.

However, at that time, the fleet didn't actually have any Red Cloaks. Red Cloaks had to be requested temporarily from the Military Department. During a confrontation between super-soldiers, the higher-ups decided to allocate Red Cloak reinforcements to support the super-soldiers rather than the Normandy Fleet. The fleet was given only one command: "Hold them off as much as possible and wait for reinforcements."

No one expected Zhang Xiaobo and Elvis to take down an actual Red Cloak in that battle. Their combined efforts didn't reach the seamlessness of the Haier Brothers but reflected the rapport developed through accumulated experience.

It was only then that the upper echelons truly began to take Zhang and Elvis seriously.

Word inexplicably spread—perhaps via some loose-lipped individual—of their connection to Feng Yi, noting that both had once been his disciples.

What did it mean to be trained by Feng Yi? The answer was clear—Mu Tou served as the perfect example: a super-soldier.

Indeed, although Elvis and Zhang Xiaobo weren't officially designated as super-soldiers and remained slightly below that rank, their skills were not far off from Red Cloak pilots. With their flawless teamwork, they even had an advantage when confronting Red Cloaks.

Ultimately, as the Normandy Fleet advanced to the frontline, Greedy Wolf temporarily revoked the fleet's allocation for a Red Cloak operative and replaced it with Elvis and Zhang Xiaobo as interim holders of this responsibility.

This infuriated Amelia to the point of nearly swearing—to her, having a Red Cloak was an indispensable necessity for every fleet, barring exceptional circumstances. The Normandy Fleet clearly fell into that exceptional category.

Truthfully, Zhang Xiaobo and Elvis also felt like swearing, though as lower-ranking officers, they lacked a voice. In any case, they were officially promoted and became the heroes of their dreams. Yet, reality played out far differently from their idealized visions.

All they had wanted was to pilot mechas and live out a romantic fantasy. They hadn't sought the weight of responsibility thrust onto them.

But the less you desire something, the more fate seems to bring it to you. The higher-ups remain keen-eyed—your stellar battlefield performance only convinces them further that you're capable of handling the toughest jobs.

Thankfully, the situation wasn't entirely grim. During one encounter with enemy super-soldiers, our forces finally dispatched a super-soldier to support them: Dovir. Among super-soldiers, Dovir's skills were considered the lowest tier. Yet, it was clear the higher-ups hadn't abandoned Elvis and Zhang Xiaobo but rather aimed to uncover their potential.

Soon afterward, a White Cloak pilot faced Zhang, Elvis, and the super-soldier Dovir simultaneously. However, after just one confrontation, the White Cloak abruptly turned tail and fled at dog-like speed.

Indeed, this greatly exceeded the expectations of Zhang Xiaobo and Elvis. At that time, Dovir was still in the Red Cloak stage. A one-on-one match between him and a White Cloak pilot was almost certainly a losing battle. Even with the addition of another Red Cloak operative, the most achievable outcome would've been a draw at best—yet the enemy fled.
