Marvelous Mecha

Chapter 848: The Unfulfillable Promise (Happy Valentine's Day)

"If you want something done right, do it yourself." Feng Yi calmly said while looking at Jiu Ling's aloof face.

Normally, Jiu Ling would have just reached out and taken it, but the mood today was special. Even if she had to endure, just as the expression on Jiu Ling's face changed, Feng Yi casually handed a few skewers of barbecue into Jiu Ling's utensils and added, "As if, I was just teasing you. Seeing you looking like a little wife who has been wronged, there, now you can eat without my feeding you."

This guy was absolutely terrible. Nobody should bully like that. Yet she knew that Feng Yi didn't mean to be purely annoying. On the contrary, her heart felt warm. But the more Feng Yi behaved like this, the more she... wanted to fight back. Jiu Ling lightly bit her silver teeth, really wanting to pounce and ravage Feng Yi right there and then.

Hmph, if it's eating we're talking about, then I'm not afraid! She stamped her foot and picked up a skewer of meat, petulantly opening her cherry lips. But still, she sniffed it and licked it before finally biting off a big, juicy piece of meat.

After chewing slowly for a few seconds, Jiu Ling's expressions changed three times in those seconds, clearly displaying curiosity, savoring and sheer surprise on her face.

If there's a word to describe what she's feeling right now, it would be "Wow!" It was delicious. As a super-soldier, she usually ate nutrition meals, which, despite their high price and average taste, had precisely measured portions. Compared to these street foods, it was like heaven and earth, one above, the other below.

The skewers of meat were quickly wiped clean by Jiu Ling. She didn't even notice how fast the food on her plate disappeared. Thankfully, Feng Yi silently handed her a few more skewers, while he himself started gulping down draft beer, "So, how's the taste? Not bad, right?"

"Well, it's okay. Just okay, though... Hey, what are you laughing at?"

"This, I'm laughing at your beautiful way of eating," Feng Yi blurted out without knowing how else to answer, but why did it feel more like he was flirting?

Jiu Ling's pretty face blushed to her ears. The barbecue tasted so good, and she had never eaten it before, that she completely let go of herself, showing her embarrassing side, "It didn't mean anything like that..."

Feng Yi laughed heartily, "What does it matter? Eat if you want, make a fuss if you feel like it. Emotions aren't meant for pretense. Look, like this." He said as he picked up a skewer and began to devour it wantonly. His barbaric actions fit the street atmosphere perfectly, as if that's the only way to truly enjoy barbecue.

Jiu Ling's small mouth turned into an 'O' shape, unaware that as he ate, Feng Yi suddenly started coughing. He actually choked...

As Feng Yi's coughing continued, Jiu Ling couldn't help but cover her lips with a light chuckle...

Actually, she wanted to keep a straight face, but for some reason, being with Feng Yi always made Jiu Ling feel at ease and relaxed, her heartbeat quickened, as if any awkwardness could be easily dissolved under his Rafael-like subtle humor.

"You finally laughed."

"I did not."

"You..." While speaking, Feng Yi pretended to cough again, and this time Jiu Ling couldn't hold back, her laughter ringing out like silver bells...

"See, I told you you would laugh. Some people just won't believe it."

"Smooth talker!" Jiu Ling tried to come across as defiant, but she couldn't resist Feng Yi's humor. She tried to keep her expression serious, then suddenly turned and said, "Rafael, you jerk."

Feng Yi fell silent. He didn't want to avoid the topic, his expression no longer jesting. In fact, his reason for seeking out Jiu Ling today was to talk things through, "Jiu Ling, we're both soldiers."

What Feng Yi said didn't seem wrong. The difference between them was just a matter of perspective. If one were to blame, it should be the world, the terrible war. Jiu Ling mulled over the word 'soldier' for a moment, falling into deep thought.

"Yeah..." Feng Yi rarely expressed such genuine emotion, "As soldiers, as frontline commanders who can decide the fate of their subordinates, we bear much more than ordinary soldiers. Whether it's because of our duty, differing stances, or strategic needs, sometimes we must make choices at these crossroads, which means giving up other things. I hope you can understand my difficulties."

"There's no blame, fundamentally speaking you haven't used me. But I genuinely feel upset about your deceitful behavior!" Jiu Ling's voice became low again, "Fortunately, the war is over, and that doesn't seem too bad, but what, in your eyes, am I really?"

Feng Yi was at a loss for words. He carried a heavy emotional debt, from Sheng Qiangwei to Nangong Qi, and now Jiu Ling—it could be said that with Sheng Qiangwei, he chose to give up for reasons unrelated to her, undoubtedly reducing Feng Yi's burden to some extent.

Nangong Qi was a different story. It was like a car accident that wasn't handled well, unexpectedly developing into a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship. Feng Yi wasn't heartless, on the contrary, what goes around comes around. Precisely because of his own mistakes in the past, he decided to take responsibility.

He had once promised Nangong Qi that when the war was over, he would go see her. Now, before he could fulfill the promise to Nangong Qi, Jiu Ling suddenly appeared, leaving him wondering how to explain it all.

At that moment, Feng Yi felt overwhelmed, as if he were on the brink of madness.

However, perhaps because of his physical condition, Feng Yi let go of much of those feelings. Fortunately, he came clean with Jiu Ling, admitting that he had met a girl while on a mission, and he recounted the whole story to Jiu Ling.
