The Cat jumped onto the counter once the line was gone. The mood in the coffee shop quickly returned to normal, and he finished his coffee.
"Maybe that was our goal today…" he muttered.
"Not at all," I said with a grin.
The two trolls packed up the books from the table and headed out. The guy gave me a quick nod before the door closed behind them.
"They were the assignment," I added quietly.
The Cat's head snapped in that direction. "How can you tell?"
"Just a feeling I got…" Not to mention that weird trick of the light. "Though, kicking out those asshats felt good. I appreciate your help there."
"Of course, though if we are done do you think we could get everyone else to leave and close up the shop?"
I chuckled at the Cat's question. "I'm not going to close early. You can go nap in your chair. We need to stay open at least until mid-afternoon. Keep consistent hours and such."
The Cat grumbled in reply, but didn't leave the counter. Though, he curled up into a ball and appeared to nap.
The rest of the afternoon passed quickly, and sadly we sold out of the coffee cake. By three o'clock the place was empty. "Betty, can you lock the door?"
It snapped shut at my request and I turned to the Cat. "You really don't like coffee shop days?"
"No, they make little sense to me, but you do well with them."
I nodded and picked the Cat up, pulling him close. "I'm thinking we sit on the roof for a bit and rest our feet. Maybe get some take-out if that sounds good."
The Cat purred in my arms in agreement.
I didn't need to rest my feet since I'd worn my boots. My feet felt amazing. My suggestion was an excuse to try to relax for a bit. "Have you ever seen a TV?"
"What's a TV?" asked the Cat.
"Oh, do I have a surprise for you." My mind raced as I wondered if I could get a TV delivered and connected to stream TV shows and movies. "I can show you on my laptop." Already, I tried to think of the best shows to introduce the Cat to. I even had a TV show in mind that involved Elves, magic, and an evil lord. Hopefully, the Cat would enjoy the show.
Stolen novel; please report.
Once in my room, I set the Cat down on my bed, and checked on Indigo. She hadn't moved from her spot, and I gave her a little pat before grabbing my laptop. "I'll order our normal Chinese order, in case she wakes up." Yet, I doubted she would wake up soon. It didn't feel like she was done yet.
I set my laptop up to watch the first episode of the show, then ordered food. It wouldn't take long to get here. By the time the food was ready, the Cat hadn't moved an inch. His eyes were locked on my little screen, mesmerized at what was going on.
I paused the show, and he turned to look at me.
"Are elves like that on your world?" he asked seriously.
"It's a story, like a bard would tell, only you can see it…" I tried to explain how TV worked, what actors were, how special effects were created, but the Cat didn't care about that. He just wanted to finish the show.
I plated up food for him and myself, but he didn't touch it at all. Instead, I ate spicy noodles as the Cat stayed glued to the screen.
A chirp, followed by a flash of purple that landed right next to my plate, almost caused me to dump my food over my bedspread.
"Indigo!"
The bookdragon didn't look different. Her size hadn't changed at all.
"Food!" She dove headfirst right into my plate, chasing after my noodles.
I chuckled and held the plate steady as she devoured every noodle that was left.
"Dumpling soup?" she asked, looking at me with gigantic eyes.
"Of course," I said with a smile. "It's downstairs. That is not an eating-on-the-bed type of food. Cat…"
He still watched the screen, and I picked up Indigo to head to the kitchen.
"How was your sleep?" I asked, carrying her.
"Long, but I feel better. Hungry…"
"Well, there's lots of food."
Indigo nuzzled into my chest leaving bits of red spicy sauce on my t-shirt, but I didn't care. Clothing could be washed.
"I missed you too," I mumbled as I entered the kitchen. One-handed I pulled out her soup bowl and poured in her favorite.
Then she climbed into the bowl and chased after the dumplings like she always did.
At least she was awake, safe, and could now speak better. Though, that might be me, too. I ate some spicy chicken, along with the rest of the noodles, as she finished the entire bowl of soup. The physics didn't work, but I tried not to think about it. Once she was done, she crawled back into my arms after rinsing off.
"Tired again…" she mumbled.
"It's okay if you need to rest more…" I lied. I didn't want her to go back to sleep for days at a time, but if that was what she needed, that was what she needed.
"Just nap…"
I carried her back upstairs and found the Cat trying to figure out how to get to the next episode.
"How does this thing work?" he growled, then he spotted Indigo in my arms. "When did she wake up?"
"You were in the middle of the show." I didn't set her in the tower. Instead, I kept her in my arms. "She said she needs to nap a little more. She can speak much clearer."
"Well, she's growing up."
I frowned at that. I thought dragons grew up slowly, over centuries, not this quick.
"I see food has arrived as well," added the cat.
"Yep. You really like that show." He had gotten completely sucked in.
"Your world's magic is strong," said the Cat around bites of what was probably cold chicken. "Very strong."
