I rub my chin at the modified display. Apparently, I now own a fleet of two, with my current flagship being the Timbergrove. It's kinda funny when you consider that the larger, stronger Peregrine is pulling the smaller, weaker, flagship.

Continuing down, I find that the levels of my crew have increased over the past week, with Irmgard obtaining the largest overall jump. Five levels in class and six in a job isn't something normally possible without a lot of knowledge and experience.

As I continue down, I notice something rather significant. Yuto hit a milestone just now. At sixty, he should have gotten a new skill- one deserving of his level.

"I'll need to ask him what it is," I mumble aloud.

I glance up into the sky, taking note of the two ships and numerous floating cards. After staring for a good minute, I lower my head and turn to Red.

"I'm done here."

"Acknowledged"

On my return to the waking worlds, I leave the confines of my room and make my way into Emmas. The Gemma is, as usual, hunched over her table. I hop onto the table and startle her away from the book she'd been reading.

"Quasi! You should knock." She admonishes, though more against me startling her than anything else.

I ignore her and point my paw at the book. "Studying?"

She blinks and refocuses her thoughts. "Ah, yes. Alvar gave me a book on Ice and snow runes. It's complicated, but also useful. With a bit of practice, I can add some of these runes onto weapons- well, once we have a forge, that is."

I nod slowly. "We hopefully will, otherwise I'll figure out a way to install one. Anyway, I heard it was done."

She perks up, then smiles shyly. She leans under her desk, open a chest, and then slaps two gauntlets on the table. "They are, but don't expect anything really impressive. It's the best I can do with my skill level."

The gauntlets on the table are actually quite impressive looking. They are jet black in color with a silver runic lining across each individual scale. Underneath the scales is a combination of steel plates, chainmail, and leather to keep the scales connected.

With a thought, I call up the item description.

Name

Wyvern Scale Gauntlets Of Fire Resist.

Rarity

Exceptional - 7 Runes.

3(1-Durability) 1(3- Fire Resist)1(1-Impact Resist)

Description

This armor is +60% more durable, +50% resilient to heat, +50% resilient to Impacts.

Sustain

The author's narrative has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

0.11% Mana Regen per Minute.

"It's different from my previous ones." I comment. "Is this going to be durable enough? Whats with the fire resistance?"

She rubs a scale softly. "Alvar recommended it after I explained the old gauntlets and what happened to them. He said Wyvern scales are as strong as steel once runed with a little durability. He also explained that the scale used is naturally resistant to fire, so adding a fire resist rune would be easier. I added the impact resist to hopefully survive the explosions you keep producing."

It's not like I'm trying to blow up my arm. It just happens!

"Mind if I try them out?"

"Go ahead," She pushes them to me.

I hop off the table and shift into my Fenrimorph form, minus the scales on my arm. Putting the gauntlets on, I find that they fit rather perfectly and snugly. Testing them out, I find the weight slightly heavier than just having scales on my arm.

"Are these that much more durable than just covering my arms in scales?" I ask in a deep, heavier tone.

Unbothered by my form, she leans into her seat. "Yes. Any equipment that has mana running through it to power runes is going to be naturally more durable. This scales with how much the sustain cost is. It's why legendary equipment almost never has resistances added to it and is rarely ever damaged from usage."

That's honestly good to know.

With a thought, I transform back into my feline form, the gauntlets left equipped for when I transform back.

"Doesnt that mean someone wearing a full set of covered legendary armor is nearly indestructible?"

She shrugs. "Maybe. I've read books of [Knights] in full runic armor, but none of them were considered indestructible."

There's probably some kind of restriction I'm missing, then.

"Well, hopefully I don't have to fight anyone like that, though I can probably just throw them off a ship if I do. Anyway, I'm going to go visit Myers. You continue what you've been doing."

"Bye," she waves as I leave and make my way to the deck. Once on the deck, I transform into a bird and fly my way to the other ship.

"With the Peregrine pulling the Timbergrove at over twenty knots, we can take some of the less safer paths to get to our destination sooner. We've got enough supplies to make it to Brothers Rest, which is- "Myers raises a finger and taps on the map at what looks like an elongated, oval island. "-Here. The island has a tower in the center, an Inquisition dock on Sparkhold, and a major merchants guild on Fumehold."

I flick my tail slightly as I paw the island on the map. "Fumehold and Sparkhold. Are they cities or towns, or districts? Who rules them?"

Myers places a finger in the middle of the island so as to split it into two. "They are cities, though young ones. The cities are ruled by two brothers who are in competition with each other.

"Oh? What do they compete on?" I ask.

"Runic body modifications."

I perk up. "Oh?" I wave a paw. "Mind expanding on that?"

Myers strokes his beard. "Do you remember that [Pirate Captain] you fought with the enlarged arm?"

I nod. "I do. He had a hell of a lot of strength and speed." My tail flicks. "Is that where he got the modification from? Seems useful."

I wonder if those runes can improve my base stats- or even better, my control! Then I could actually hold proper weapons. With my strength, I could use a sword. A very big sword. Like, massive, to the point it looks less like a sword and more a thick piece of metal.

"It can be." Myers acknowledges. "Though my experience dealing with anyone who has such a modification is limited to [Pirates] and [Mercenaries]."

So, modifications for combat. Good to know.

"How long until we arrive?"

"A week, maybe less." He says. "Sooner if the weather stays good. Did you want to dock at Sparkhold or Fumehold first?"

"Sparkhold! I want my new ship."

Myers snorts. "I figured as much." The old man leans back into his chair. "Is there anything else you wanted to ask me?"

"Yes," I lean forward. "I have a question about the [Sub-Captain] class."

"What question?"

"Leveling. Is it normal for a [Captain] to gain levels because of the actions of the [Sub-captain]?"

"It is, though generally rare." Myers grins knowling. "Irmgard obtaining the Peregrine gave you job levels, didn't it."

"I'm a level twenty-four [Captain] now." I say. "And I did nothing to obtain it. I wasn't anywhere near my ship either."

"You delegated your leadership by giving authority to Irmgard. Your choice of the individual to delegate has resulted in obtaining a ship exponentially more impressive than your current vessel. Both you and the [Sub-captain] will level from that." Myers explains.

"Still, that's a lot of levels. Also, doesn't that mean I can get all of my [Captain] levels through the actions of my [Sub-captain]?"

The old man nods slowly. "You can, but it will be slower than you doing the actions yourself. Also, few [Sub-captain's] with any degree of competence can easily quit being a [Sub-captain] and become a full-fledged [Captain] with all the levels and some of the skills getting transferred."

I lean back into my hind-legs and cross my paws. "I see. Well, Irmgard leveled substantially. She's at the point of becoming advanced in both class and job. And I know that upgrading classes changes the class based on your actions. So, what would happen if I gained my next level solely through the actions of my [Sub-captain]?"

Myers opens his mouth to speak, but pauses, then tries again, only to pause. He grabs his beard and starts lightning pulling it down. He even looks up as though deep in thought. After a good half minute, he lowers his head and makes eye contact. "I have no idea."

When Ayda joined Quasi as a part of his crew, she'd done so on a whim of desperation and anger. After watching so many of her former teammates getting slaughtered, on top of watching bad leadership leading nearly to her own death, she'd immediately decided to get away from the Boulderglades guild as soon as possible. Joining Quasi's crew was a decision solely based on the [Captains] and his crew's combat ability. She'd been impressed with how he dealt with the golem and then more so at dealing with the [Bounty Hunter].

She'd believed Quasi to be a competent [Captain] with a large ship and a crew numbering in several dozens. In retrospect, she should have asked more questions- better questions. If she did, she'd have realised that their ship is only of frigate class and that their crew numbers only fifteen if you include the child.

Granted, her choices at the moment weren't impressive to begin with. She could join a random [Captain] or another [Mercenary] group, neither of which were appealing. Regardless, her choice is made and she'll stick with it until a better one reveals itself.

She leans back into the wall, watching as an explosion of fire excretes into the ship's hull, the flame slightly more focussed than the previous attempts.

At the very least, she can't complain about boredom.

Another explosion, this one also an improvement.

"Twist it more and delay the ignition." She says.

"I'm trying," Quasi growls out. He punches again in his monstrous form, blasting a jet of flame from his charred arms. "But it's difficult to keep the activations both moving how I want and cascading over microseconds."

Ayda snorts at the deep growled whine of a [Captain] blowing himself up to learn to cast spells.

"Of course it's going to be difficult. You're trying to learn a technique that took me nearly a decade to perfect in less than a week." She explains, omitting the fact that his progress has already advanced in years since she'd shown him the technique so coveted by her house.

He punches again, improving ever so slightly while simultaneously further cooking his arms.

Cascading spells is a technique in which you make the runes activate at separate moments but within an incredibly low timeframe. This produces stronger spells in comparison to activating all of the runes at the same time. For fire spells, this technique is exceptionally more powerful as the cascading runes exponentially increase the temperature.

Quasi punches several more times until she sees a slight lick of blue to the flame. Just as she leans forward to congratulate him on a major milestone, she pauses as Quasi shifts his head while his fur bristles and tail swishes.

His maw shifts downward to what seems like a frown.

"Is something wrong?" She asks hesitantly.

"Kinda." Quasi answers, a bit of confusion in his voice. "I'm hearing a voice asking for freedom," Quasi explains. His frown deepens to something of annoyance. "Also, I'm apparently its mother."
