«It's been a week since my birthday, and not only have you still not given me my present,» Melania grumbles «But you even canceled our deal—where you'd give me your dick every day in exchange for my blood. I'm really not happy, you know? Don't tell me you've got another woman. I'd get jealous, you know that.»
It's a little past two in the morning. We're walking back from John Hawkley's villa after another brutal training session. John insists on training us personally—apparently, he's seen some kind of potential in us—and tonight, I finally understood what the deal between him and Melania really was. She never cared about her father—she never has. All she ever wanted was to escape the boring life of a human and get fucked by an incubus. I hate to admit it, but those creatures aren't just insanely powerful—they're sex machines. They've got a tool that could give a horse an inferiority complex, and they know exactly how to use it. I'm honestly jealous. I heard Melania screaming her lungs out during the hour she spent with Raelos in the guest room at John's place. She came out completely wrecked.
I'm taking her home now, then heading back to my beloved Isabelle—the mother of my child. Or maybe daughter; we still don't know, though deep down I obviously hope it's a boy.
And yeah, Melania's right. Ever since I found out I'm going to be a father, I haven't touched her—not even with a finger. But it's not just her—Elaine, Mrs. Fenwick, Professor Ashby, Mrs. Lunsford, any random other milf I used to mess around with. I've buried all of that. What kind of man would I be if I spent my nights cheating on the woman I love, the one carrying in her womb the fruit of our love—the blood of our blood? —A shitty man, that's what. Isabelle and I always took every precaution, and if she still ended up pregnant, then it must be fate—a message from the so-called God of Vampires saying, «Ren, it's time to straighten up before Isabelle finds out about your affairs and it's too late.» Message received.
«But listen to yourself… you fuck at least two different men every day, and you're the one who's jealous?» I snap, my tone dripping with sarcasm.
«So what? My pussy belongs to everyone, but my heart only to one—and that one was you, Ren! You broke my heart and left a void that no one can ever fill!» she whines, clearly exaggerating.
«Seems to me that void's been more than filled…»
«Stop talking to me like I'm some random slut,» she growls, glaring daggers at me.
She literally said three seconds ago that her body belongs to everyone… Women are really something else.
Finally, we reach the entrance of Elaine's apartment building—the one where Melania's been staying for the time being. She told me they'll be moving soon; apparently, her mother Britney finally found a steady job as a clerk in a renowned sporting-goods chain. Together with the money John pays Melania for being under him, it's more than enough to keep a roof over their heads.
«So... I'm going upstairs now. Thanks for walking me back,» Melania murmurs shyly, lowering her head, her cheeks tinted with a faint blush.
And now what's with her? Why this sudden change in attitude? She's never shown even the slightest hint of being a shy or modest girl. Yeah, confirmed—women are so damn strange.
«Y-Yeah, see you tomorrow night when we go to John's... I'll pick you up at the usual time,» I reply, still confused.
Out of courtesy, I wait for her to go inside first, but she doesn't move an inch. She just stands there, staring at the ground, rubbing her thighs together, mumbling—like a nervous schoolgirl who wants to say something but is too embarrassed to speak.
«Ren...» she whispers so quietly it's almost inaudible, still not lifting her eyes from the asphalt. «So... is it really over between us...?»
«I must've missed the part where there was ever something between us,» I reply flatly.
«Stupid... we fucked every night, and I know you liked it as much as I did! I'm not blind! Sure, at first you only did it to stop me from getting into trouble by using my powers in public and risking attracting the attention of some Monster Reaper, but things changed over time, I'm sure of it! You even stopped my father from taking me to N'Raeth by making a deal with a man you despise! Why did you do that? Don't tell me you cared that much just because you liked my blood...» Melania sobs, clenching her fists.
«I only did it for Elaine,» I answer in a cold, detached tone, looking away from her. «If something bad had happened to you—if you had vanished one day, or worse, been killed by a Monster Reaper—it would have crushed Elaine. That's all.»
Bullshit. I'd be lying to myself if I said I didn't feel anything for her. Sure, calling it love would be an exaggeration, but I can't deny that I've gotten somewhat attached to her over these past few weeks. Still, what we had—this carnal, intimate thing between us—is something that can't go on anymore.
«That's a lie...» Melania mutters. «It's just a filthy lie! I love you, Ren—I really do... I never thought I'd say that, but it's true. If I go with other men, it's only to satisfy my natural succubus needs, not because I actually want to. I only want you, believe me... I'll never go with anyone else again, I swear on my life. I know you're going to be a father soon, but I don't care—I'll raise that child as if it were ours. And if being a parent makes you happy, then we'll give him as many brothers and sisters as you want... we'll be a big, happy family—I really mean it! So please, Ren, don't abandon me!»
A sharp pain squeezes my chest as thick tears start streaming down her flushed cheeks.
I never wanted to be a father—and even if I had, definitely not with her. Besides, from what I know, succubi and vampires can't even reproduce. It's just a situation I've found myself in, but one I intend to face like a man, together with the woman I love—Isabelle.
I turn sharply, giving her my back.
«I'm going home. Goodnight, Melania.»
«Ren, please, wait... I want to stay with you a little longer. I'm not sleepy at all, and tomorrow's Saturday, so there's no school. Let's walk around Manhattan a bit more, okay?» she begs in tears, grabbing the hem of my hoodie.
«Goodnight, Melania,» I repeat firmly, leaving her behind as I stride away.
She stays there, frozen in place, watching me walk away, her sobs echoing faintly through the quiet street.
