Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

When Jiang Baiyan wasn’t smiling, there was an inexplicable coldness in his eyes, like the edge of a hidden blade.

Shi Dai called him, “Jiang Baiyan.”

At the sound of his name, he looked up, and that chill vanished completely.

“You should get one too.” Shi Dai said with utter confidence. “Look, everyone else is wearing new clothes today. As the old saying goes, a family should look neat and tidy together.”

Jiang Baiyan: …

A very ancient proverb indeed, its history probably dated back to about a second ago.

Shi Dai continued, “Besides, you always wear white. Don’t you want to try something different?”

“Something different?” Jiang Baiyan repeated quietly.

He remembered her saying not long ago that he looked good in white.

Did she not like it anymore?

“For example, black, green, or pale moon-white…” Shi Dai said. “White looks good on you, but maybe if you try another color, you’ll find a different kind of charm.”

She tried to imagine Jiang Baiyan in black.

He would probably look cold and intimidating… maybe even a little dangerous?

After studying her for a brief moment, Jiang Baiyan smiled gently. “All right. What color do you want to see?”

He said it so naturally that Shi Dai was momentarily speechless.

What did he mean by ‘she wanted to see’?

It sounded as if——

Fine. She did want to see.

“I think any color would do.” Shi Dai said honestly. “You’d look good in anything.”

A faint smile tugged at the corner of Jiang Baiyan’s lips.

Before him stood the girl in her red gown of luxurious sunrise satin, brilliant as morning clouds, the golden-threaded patterns outlining her slender figure.

She looked like a vivid, radiant lady from a painting.

His gaze brushed lightly over her, then drifted away. After a pause, he reached out his right hand.

Shi Dai followed the movement of his arm and couldn’t help letting out a soft “eh?”

Jiang Baiyan had picked a red robe.

——He actually chose red?

Before this moment, countless possibilities had crossed her mind, but never this one.

In her impression, Jiang Baiyan was always calm and cool, his white robes clean and unadorned, like a handful of pure frost.

Crimson, on the other hand, was bright and rich; it was too bold, too vivid, the complete opposite of his usual style.

Seeing the astonishment on her face, Jiang Baiyan asked quietly, “You don’t like it?”

Shi Dai quickly shook her head. “No, it’s not that.”

“This young gentleman has the bearing of a crane and the poise of a pine.” The shop attendant said with a smile. “He would look good in any color. Allow me to take you to the fitting room, young master.”

Jiang Baiyan followed the attendant away, and not long after, Shen Liushuang emerged from the inner chamber.

She was tall and well-proportioned, her muscles firm and defined from years of sword and blade training.

The dark green robe suited her perfectly, like ink spreading gently over water, tracing the upright silhouette of a pine tree.

Noticing Shi Dai’s gaze, Shen Liushuang seemed to blush slightly and lifted a loose strand of hair by her temple.

“It looks beautiful.” Shi Dai clasped her hands together, her eyes shining brightly. “Big sis…”

With those sparkling eyes and that eager, affectionate tone, she looked just like a small puppy wagging its tail. Shen Liushuang couldn’t help but laugh, then turned to the shop attendant and said, “I’ll take it.”

Shi Dai immediately jumped in, “Today’s my treat. Why don’t you pick out another one, too?”

“Mmm, this one looks great on Liushuang.” Meng Ke said with a raised brow, pointing at another gown she had her eye on. “A white dress should suit you as well.”

Shi Yunsheng wasn’t good with words. He thought he ought to say something nice to make Shen Liushuang happy, but after thinking for quite a while, he could only squeeze out, “I think so too.”

Shen Liushuang rubbed his head with a smile. “What’s that you’re holding?”

Shi Yunsheng raised his arm, revealing a pitch-black mask in his hand.

In Great Zhao, this kind of thing was also called a “substitute face,” believed to bring blessings and ward off evil.

Zijin Pavilion followed the Lantern Festival custom and displayed many such masks. He had little interest in the colorful clothes, but his eyes had immediately caught on a painted wolf-head mask.

Shi Dai smiled. “It’s a little wolf. Let me help you put it on.”

After a moment of hesitation, Shi Yunsheng obediently lifted his head.

The mask was made for adults, so it was a bit too big for him.

Shi Dai placed it over his face, tied the ribbons securely, and carefully adjusted the position.

Her movements were gentle and focused, and accompanied by her faint scent of plum blossoms, it was also calm and reassuring.

Beneath the wolf mask, Shi Yunsheng’s black eyes peered out. “Thank you.”

“There’s no need for thanks.” Shi Dai stepped back and patted his head. “All right now, my little brother looks heroic and gallant.”

Shi Yunsheng said nothing, only let out a small, quiet chuckle.

The sound was light and fleeting, brushing softly past her ears, and just then, from the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of red.

Jiang Baiyan was coming out?

Shi Dai instinctively turned her head.

She froze.

Beauty strike.

Jiang Baiyan’s features leaned toward the refined and strikingly attractive, his peach-blossom eyes naturally carrying a trace of tenderness, their corners tinged with a languid allure even when he wasn’t smiling.

The crimson robe on him burned like fire, accentuating his broad shoulders and long legs; the skin visible beyond the fabric was so fair it seemed like freshly fallen snow.

It was as if a blaze had suddenly ignited within her field of vision, so stunning it made one’s heart ache.

He held a dark belt in one hand, fastening it around his waist with casual ease, his robe slightly disheveled, his expression nonchalant.

Shi Dai blinked slowly.

As the belt drew tight, it outlined his narrow waist and the fluid curve of his lean figure——

So slender.

She realized she had been staring too long and felt impolite. She was about to avert her gaze when Jiang Baiyan lifted his eyes.

The corners of his lips curved upward, faintly red and thin, and the tiny black mole by his mouth deepened that smile.

He smiled soundlessly, his gaze soft and shallow, meeting hers directly.

It was like a peach blossom blooming at the corner of his eyes.

In the next instant, Jiang Baiyan lowered his head again and finished fastening his belt.

Shi Dai: …

What was that?

Just now… it felt like she had been hooked by a fishing line.

Shi Jingcheng looked somewhat surprised. “That outfit… actually suits you.”

Meng Ke quickly followed, “Truly a face like flowers beneath the moon.”

Shen Liushuang: …

Shi Yunsheng: …

They couldn’t bring themselves to say it.

Shen Liushuang frowned slightly. Where did this fox come from? Did he have to smile at her sister like that?

A’Li widened its beady eyes in protest: We foxes are very proper, we don’t do that!

Wait. How could I, a dignified Fragment of Heavenly Law, admit I was a fox?!

Shi Yunsheng took off his mask so he could see more clearly.

Who would have thought that within the modest Shi residence, there were actually two flamboyant, peacocking beauties.

He puffed his cheeks, gripping the ferocious wolf mask in both hands, and turned its gaping jaws toward Jiang Baiyan’s direction.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
