Afterwards, Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng went to pay their respects to the Emperor and Empress.

As expected, both the Emperor and Empress Xiao were deeply shocked, and they immediately asked what had happened to Gu Jiao’s face. Gu Jiao valued her dignity, so she naturally did not reveal that it had been a gecko cinnabar.

“I used a kind of medicinal liquid to remove it.” Gu Jiao said.

“What kind of medicinal liquid… is so miraculous?” Empress Xiao asked, clearly wanting some for herself.

Gu Jiao thought to herself: No, you don’t want this.

“Aunt, how has Little Seventh been lately?” Seeing the conversation about to drift into an unspeakable direction, Xiao Heng quickly shifted the subject to Qin Chuyu.

Qin Chuyu studied in the prodigy class at the Imperial Academy together with Little Jing Kong; the two were very close friends, along with another boy, Xu Zhouzhou, the youngest son of the Minister of War.

At the mention of her son, Empress Xiao’s attention was successfully diverted. “He’s almost ten years old now, yet he’s still just like when he first entered the academy. Loud and boisterous all day long…”

After visiting the Emperor and Empress, the two spent the rest of the day at Renshou Palace and only took their leave from Grandaunt as dusk fell.

Gu Xiaobao clung to Gu Jiao’s arms, refusing to come down.

“You like to go home with sister?” Gu Jiao teased him.

“Yeah.” He answered immediately.

Yao shi: “…” What about your mother then?

Gu Jiao looked at him with a smile. “Just now, you called me sister.”

Gu Xiaobao: “Didn’t.”

Gu Jiao: “You did, you called me.”

Gu Xiaobao: “Didn’t.”

Gu Jiao: “What didn’t you call me?”

Gu Xiaobao: “Sister.”

Gu Jiao: “There you go!”

The tricked Gu Xiaobao: “…”

Gu Jiao burst out laughing and carried the adorably silly little boy into the carriage. Halfway through the ride, Gu Xiaobao had already fallen asleep in her arms.

Yao shi carefully took him over, then said to the two of them, “It’s getting late now, you two should hurry back.”

After bidding farewell to Yao shi, Gu Yan, and Gu Xiaoshun, the two got into another carriage and returned to the Princess Mansion.

The two of them had originally planned to first go and pay their respects to the Princess and the Marquis, but as soon as they entered the courtyard, they were informed that Marquis Xuanping and Princess Xinyang had taken Little Yiyi out to enjoy the lantern festival.

Gu Jiao let out an “oh” and said, “So their second spring has arrived.”

“Is that really how you use that phrase?” Xiao Heng glanced at her with amusement. Yet with that glance, once again, he found himself unable to look away.

She was like a peach just ripening, her whole being exuding an irresistible charm.

Sensing the heat in his gaze, Gu Jiao asked curiously, “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“Are you still tired?” He asked softly.

He was asking if she was still tired from that activity, but Gu Jiao didn’t catch the nuance. She thought he was merely asking whether entering the palace had tired her, so she shook her head and replied, “Not tired.”

An hour later, all the servants of Lanting Courtyard walked out, their faces flushed red.

Tonight, they would not need to be on duty again.

……

In the Marquis Changping Estate.

Gu Jinyu had just finished bathing. Wearing a thin, cool crimson night-robe close to her skin, she sat upon her bridal bed.

“Chunliu, do I look pretty like this?” She asked.

“You look beautiful!” Chunliu answered sincerely.

It was no flattery. Her young miss truly grew more and more breathtaking by the day, like a fairy descended to earth.

Her figure had matured, her posture was graceful, her skin smooth like congealed cream. What word other than beauty could suffice?

“Go and see how Third Young Master is.” Gu Jinyu instructed.

“Yes.” Chunliu responded briskly and went off.

After about half a quarter of an hour, Chunliu returned, looking embarrassed.

“Third Young Master still won’t come?” Gu Jinyu asked, her face expressionless.

Chunliu hesitated and said with difficulty, “Third Young Master is coughing very badly. He said he fears passing the illness to you and that you should go ahead and rest. Tonight, he’ll sleep in the study instead.”

“Illness, always illness!” Gu Jinyu clenched the handkerchief in her hand.

On her wedding night, she had been full of longing as she married into the Marquis Changping Estate. That her groom hadn’t come to fetch her was one thing, but to think he also didn’t come to her bridal chamber on their wedding night!

She had been married into the family for three days, and for all those three days he had been ill. To this day, she still remained untouched.

Gu Jinyu steadied her emotions and instructed Chunliu, “Go tell Third Young Master that my body is healthy and I am not afraid of catching his sickness. Ask him to come and rest in the bedchamber.”

For a woman to say something to this extent was the same as casting aside all her pride and dignity.

If he still refused to come——

She had grown up within the household, and no one understood better than her just how difficult the days of a woman out of favor could become.

She must not follow down the same bitter path as those other women.

“Yes.” Chunliu braced herself and went once more to the study.

However, the result was no different from before. Young Master Quan still insisted on resting in the study.

Chunliu said, “But Third Young Master did say that he must properly nurse his health tonight, and tomorrow morning he will accompany young miss back to her maiden home.”

Hearing this, Gu Jinyu’s expression finally eased somewhat. “So Third Young Master truly is sick, it is not that he does not wish to come, but that he fears passing the illness to me. This shows he cherishes me.”

Chunliu nodded rapidly, “Exactly, Third Young Master truly cherishes you! Otherwise, why would he cut his own finger and let people take the ‘blood’ to present to the Marchioness?”

Gu Jinyu let out a sigh. “You are right, Third Young Master is a thoughtful man, I should not let my mind wander.”

Chunliu smiled. “That’s the spirit! Shall this servant help you prepare for rest?”

“Mm.” Gu Jinyu did not object.

Chunliu loosened the hairpin from her hair.

Gu Jinyu asked, “Tell me, how do you think things are with my elder sister? To marry the same man twice, only she could come up with such an idea.”

Chunliu gave a cold snort. “If you ask this servant, the Little Marquis should have long since grown weary of her. Who could keep looking at the same face for four years without becoming sick of it? And besides, she looks so ugly. The Little Marquis only married her because he was forced to. She may have saved the lives of the Empress Dowager and His Majesty, and she may have relied on her medical skill to treat Duke An of the State of Yan, but aside from that, she has no other abilities at all. In my opinion, the Little Marquis only took her back as a mere ornament. As the years go by, she will certainly suffer.”

Gu Jinyu lowered her gaze and smoothed the corner of her robe. “She and the Young Marquis have been married for four years without bearing any children. Tell me… why do you think that is?”

Chunliu, combing her mistress’s hair with the wooden comb, sneered, “Of course it’s because she cannot give birth! So she turns out to be nothing more than a hen that cannot lay eggs! Young miss, you can rest assured. Her days in the Marquis Estate will not be easy.”

Gu Jinyu let out a faint sigh. “She is my elder sister after all. In my heart, I still hope she will be well.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
