Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)
Of course, everyone knew the situation in the State of Yan was not as calm as Shangguan Yan made it sound. The influence of the ten great noble families alone was enough to give her endless headaches.
And her absence had another reason: she feared Princess Xinyang did not wish to see her.
Inside the study, Princess Xinyang sighed. “It’s all in the past now. I’ve long since let it go.”
After Gu Jiao left, only the mother and her two children remained in the room.
In her arms, Little Yiyi opened her wide eyes and stared at her mother, as if trying hard to understand what was troubling her.
Shangguan Qing shook his head and said, “You’ll probably have to tell her yourself. Otherwise, with my mother’s temperament, she’ll never be able to get past it.”
Princess Xinyang suddenly asked, “When do you plan to go back?”
Shangguan Qing’s eyes widened. “What, Mother, are you trying to chase me away?”
Princess Xinyang glanced down at the daughter in her arms. “Both you and your brother are here with me. Your mother will be lonely by herself.”
Shangguan Qing raised his brows. “Then why can’t my younger brother be the one to go back?”
Princess Xinyang lifted her gaze and looked at him. “Your younger brother has already found himself a State of Zhao wife. Do you also intend to marry a State of Zhao wife?”
Shangguan Qing said with a perfectly straight face, “Well, it’s not impossible. If it’s someone like you, Mother, I might consider it.”
Princess Xinyang had been speaking to Shangguan Qing with a heavy and sorrowful heart, yet his last remark left her torn between laughter and exasperation.
That aside, Shangguan Qing truly did have plans to return to the State of Yan.
After all, he had two mothers. He had already decided he would live half a year in each place. Besides, he loved roaming about anyway.
At the end of all three letters, the same matter was raised: the identity of the two children.
She was uncertain which of the brothers would be willing to assume the role of Great Yan’s Crown Prince, or whether both would, or perhaps neither of them.
She respected her sons’ choices, whatever they might be, and would gladly accept any outcome.
This was also what Princess Xinyang had always struggled with in her heart. For this reason, she had not yet revealed the children’s true parentage to the Emperor of Zhao.
Princess Xinyang said, “Your mother has no objection, and truthfully, neither do I. You should discuss it with your younger brother.”
Shangguan Qing’s eyes flickered. “Shouldn’t you… consult with my father as well?”
Princess Xinyang’s expression darkened in an instant. “No matter which one of you it is, you are both his sons. What is there for him to lose?”
Shangguan Qing rubbed his nose sheepishly.
He had only mentioned it in passing, but look how furious his mother still was.
It had already been a whole day and night, and she still hadn’t cooled down.
Perhaps because she heard the word “father,” Little Yiyi suddenly seemed to remember such a person. She began twisting her head toward the outside, even trying to sit up.
Princess Xinyang instantly regretted it. Wasn’t bringing up her father at this hour just asking her to look for him?
And sure enough, Little Yiyi, who always had to be coaxed to sleep by her father each night, let her emotions surge at once. Her tiny mouth quivered, and with a wail, she burst into tears——
Little Yiyi was a baby with astonishing perseverance. If she wanted to cry for her father, then she would make sure to cry her father over.
Other children would tire themselves out after a while of crying, but as a baby full of energy, such a thing never happened with her.
Princess Xinyang would sometimes think she spoiled her too much. Perhaps it was better to let her cry, and after a few tries she would learn that this trick was useless.
But this child was truly stubborn. Even when her throat grew hoarse from crying, she still refused to stop.
Marquis Xuanping appeared right on time at the doorway of the study, strutting in proudly as if to flaunt his position in the household.
“Is Yiyi looking for her father? Yiyi’s favorite person really is her father, isn’t it?”
He asked with that infuriating tone of his.
Princess Xinyang shot him a glare, and without a word, she handed their daughter over to Shangguan Qing.
Shangguan Qing sighed inwardly. His bookworm younger brother really didn’t have it easy all these years, always caught between their parents.
The little one was wailing loudly. Shangguan Qing pursed his lips and hurriedly handed her over to her father.
The moment she reached her father’s arms, she stopped crying, though her small face was still full of grievance.
This pained Marquis Xuanping deeply. Hugging his daughter, he gave Princess Xinyang a disapproving look. “Qin Fengwen, how could you…”
But Princess Xinyang sent him a sharp look like a blade.
Marquis Xuanping instantly switched tone without pause, “How could you raise our daughter so wonderfully?”
And thus the father was completely defeated.
The siblings both turned their heads away at the same time, unwilling to watch any longer.
……
Meanwhile, though Gu Jiao outwardly left Princess Xinyang’s residence, she secretly circled back.
With one hand she vaulted into the courtyard and made her way to Xiao Heng’s room to look around.
“Hm, he really isn’t here…”
Princess Xinyang truly went all out to make sure this engaged couple followed the rules.
Gu Jiao pouted and returned to the carriage.
Tonight, Gu Xiaobao most likely would not wake up; he would probably sleep straight through until morning.
Gu Jiao pinched his little arm. The feel was not the same as pinching little Yiyi’s hand.
He wasn’t as chubby as Yiyi.
The two got down from the carriage.
Yu Ya’er carried Gu Xiaobao into the courtyard first. Just as Gu Jiao was about to step over the threshold, a slender, jade-like hand reached from her side and gently clasped her wrist.
She turned her head and saw Xiao Heng. He pressed a finger to his lips, giving her a signal.
She understood, and quickly said to Yu Ya’er, “I’ll go buy something! I’ll be right back!”
Yu Ya’er let out a puzzled “Eh?” and turned to look at Gu Jiao, but by then Gu Jiao’s figure had already vanished outside the gate.
“Why didn’t she buy it on the way back…” she muttered, while carrying the sleeping Gu Xiaobao into the house.
Yao shi was making wedding clothes for Little Jing Kong. The reason was that Little Jing Kong had once seen Xiao Heng’s wedding clothes at Princess Xinyang’s house, and he had declared that since his “bad brother-in-law” had them, he must have them too.
“Where’s JiaoJiao? Didn’t she come back with you?” Yao shi set down her needlework and reached out to take her son.
Yu Ya’er replied, “She did. She came back to the gate with me, but then she remembered she hadn’t bought something, so she went out again.”
“I see.” Yao shi didn’t suspect anything. Carrying Xiaobao back into the room, she added, “By the way, Yu Ya’er, go fetch some hot water. I’ll give Xiaobao a bath.”
“Yes, Madame!”
Yu Ya’er happily went to draw water.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
