"Are you sure that kind of herb grows in the mountain behind your home?"
Marquis Xuanping asked, his tone more serious than ever before.
"No."
Chang Jing lied without hesitation.
Marquis Xuanping nodded. "Very well then. Are you going back on your own, or shall I take you there myself?"
Chang Jing said, "I already told you, we don’t have it."
Marquis Xuanping went on with his plan, unfazed. "Or should I just write to your father and tell him I’ve kidnapped you, and demand he exchange you for the purple herb?"
Chang Jing blurted out, "There's no such thing behind our house… I misspoke earlier…"
Marquis Xuanping shook his head and said, "Forget it. Hidden Night Island is located in such a remote and obscure place that ordinary scouts wouldn’t even be able to find the entrance. I’d better go there myself."
Chang Jing was speechless.
Just like that, his little disguise fell apart, and he had basically handed a poisoned pill over to Zhu Zhangkuang for free.
Marquis Xuanping said, "Go pack your things. We’ll leave first thing tomorrow morning."
With a face full of grievance, Chang Jing walked off next door.
Gu Jiao asked Marquis Xuanping, "By the way, what’s with Chang Jing? Did you know he’s the young master of the Hidden Night Sect?"
Marquis Xuanping answered wearily, "I only just found out. One of the swordsmen beside Gongsun Yu mentioned it. Back when I met him on the roadside, he was filthy and half-starved, chest nearly touching his back from hunger. I asked him where his home was, but he refused to say. I told him to come with me, he wouldn’t agree at first… eventually, I beat him a few rounds."
Chang Jing knew martial arts, so Marquis Xuanping never really believed he was from an ordinary family.
However, since the boy kept his identity tightly sealed, Marquis Xuanping had assumed he was on the run from some powerful enemies.
Marquis Xuanping looked at Gu Jiao and asked, "You seem like you’ve known all along?"
After all, she hadn’t looked the least bit surprised when she heard "Hidden Night Island."
Gu Jiao replied honestly, "When I first arrived in the State of Yan, I followed Nangong Li to a pawnshop and overheard him speaking with a trusted aide. That’s how I found out about Chang Jing’s identity."
Marquis Xuanping turned to Ye Qing, who was standing nearby, and said, "It seems the people from Hidden Night Island have had some dealings with the Imperial Advisor's Hall of the State of Yan."
The Sect Leader of Hidden Night Sect had even once personally visited the Imperial Advisor's Hall, and during the visit, had also been granted an audience with the Emperor of the State of Yan.
Ye Qing responded, "My master did have some personal ties with the Lord of the Hidden Night Island. If General Xiao doesn’t mind, I’d be willing to accompany you all to the island."
After all, Marquis Xuanping had more or less "abducted" the other man’s son. Now going to ask for medicine, they naturally wouldn’t agree so easily.
But with a disciple of the Imperial Advisor's Hall mediating, it would smooth things over considerably.
Meanwhile, Chang Jing was furiously packing his things, full of resentment.
Marquis Xuanping walked in, gave him a look, and asked blandly, "Do you really hate the idea of going back that much?"
Chang Jing was feeling stifled.
He had finally managed to run away from home, and now he would have to go back only to be locked up again by his father.
Marquis Xuanping said, "If your father bullies you, I’ll beat him up for you."
Chang Jing replied without hesitation, "That won’t do."
His father might be annoying, but he couldn’t let others bully him.
From that, Marquis Xuanping understood. Chang Jing didn’t have any deep-seated conflict with his family. He was just a rebellious young brat.
"Forget it, you can go ahead and beat him." Chang Jing sighed. "Not like you’d win anyway."
Marquis Xuanping: "..."
And so the plan to go to Hidden Night Island was settled. In order to make Chang Jing willing to lead the way, Marquis Xuanping finally bought him a box of glass marbles he had long been drooling over.
The journey to Hidden Night Island was not an easy one, especially with winter fast approaching. There was a high chance of encountering deadly blizzards while crossing the icy plains.
Chang Jing said, "Once the tenth month arrives, my father forbids anyone from leaving the island."
It was simply too dangerous. Human strength meant nothing in the face of natural disaster.
"We need to cross the northern ice plains of Yan before the blizzards hit. If you bring your son along, we won’t make it in time."
Which meant Shangguan Qing could not come along.
Marquis Xuanping agreed, "Alright."
Chang Jing reminded him, “But coming back is extremely dangerous too. Even if my father is willing to give you those wild herbs, you’ll most likely be traveling back during the eleventh month or twelfth month. Those are the months when blizzards rampage across the ice plains.”
“I know.” Marquis Xuanping said without a hint of hesitation. “You and Ye Qing stay on Hidden Night Island. I’ll make the return trip alone.”
Chang Jing looked at him in astonishment. “You’re going to cross the ice plains alone for a month? That’s impossible!”
In truth, even with many powerful martial artists traveling together, the brutal weather on the ice plains was something no skill could withstand.
Yet for once, Marquis Xuanping didn’t carry his usual irreverent tone. He met Chang Jing’s gaze and said solemnly, “The antidote will be in my hands, so I will make it through.”
Twenty years ago, he had failed to save Xiao Qing.
This time, even if his body were to be shattered and his bones crushed, he would still bring the antidote back for his son.
By now, Chang Jing already understood the situation. He shot Marquis Xuanping a sidelong glance and said, “Didn’t you say it might not even be the antidote? It could just as well kill him.”
Was it really worth risking everything for something so uncertain?
Marquis Xuanping went to bid Gu Jiao farewell: “…Take care of Qing’er.”
It was said in a tone of sincere entreaty.
“I will.” Gu Jiao replied. “You’ve really decided to go?”
Marquis Xuanping said with resolve, “We leave at dawn.”
His decision was firm, so Gu Jiao didn’t try to dissuade him further. “Then I’ll pack some emergency medical supplies for you.”
Marquis Xuanping did not decline.
Gu Jiao opened her little medicine chest and took out burn ointment for frostbite, anti-inflammatory pills, iodine, gauze, and other emergency items. She bundled them up and handed the package over to Ye Qing.
“Remember to remove his stitches three days from now.” Gu Jiao said.
Ye Qing was slightly taken aback. “General Xiao is injured?”
Gu Jiao gave a soft “Mm” and said, “Gongsun Yu stabbed him. It was pretty deep cut and needed four stitches.”
And yet he was still heading to Hidden Night Island.
He truly didn’t care whether he lived or died!

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
