Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

This man donned in a kitchen garb had appeared once before. Both Xiao Heng and the old general recognized him and were not unfamiliar with his presence.

The two of them looked at him as he cupped his hands in a formal greeting, then, speaking in perfect State of Yan language, said, “Reporting to Your Highness the Eldest Imperial Grandson of Great Yan, my master wishes to ask what your decision is. Whatever the Crown Prince can offer, my master can offer as well. And what the Crown Prince cannot give, my master can still provide.”

Xiao Heng answered without hesitation, "I have no interest in getting involved in your State of Chen’s internal power struggles. If your prince has the ability, let him first secure the position of Crown Prince of the State of Chen."

The man in the kitchen garb let out a chuckle. “Does Your Highness truly believe that Crown Prince Yuan Tang would actually agree? Even if he does, he lacks the capacity to influence the situation. I fear when the time comes, he’ll only end up becoming a burden to the State of Yan.”

Xiao Heng replied in an indifferent tone, “All I know is that he is the one who holds the title of Crown Prince and your prince does not.”

That single line struck the man speechless, his face turning beet red in frustration.

Of course, he wasn’t really a kitchen worker, but a subordinate of the second prince of the State of Chen.

His anger surged uncontrollably, and with a sneer he spat, “It seems to me your State of Yan has grown arrogant for too long. Do you really think you can defeat both the States of Jin and Liang just by uniting a few lower nations? Delusional! Your State of Yan is already besieged from all sides! My prince’s willingness to cooperate with you is a gesture of generosity! The wise adapt to the times, don’t overestimate yourselves!”

The old general drew his sword in an instant, radiating a murderous aura. “You insolent brat! How dare you speak so disrespectfully to the Eldest Imperial Grandson of Great Yan!”

The man in kitchen garb shuddered from fear on the spot.

Xiao Heng said coolly, “Let it be, General Fu. He is not a subject of the State of Yan, and it is not our place to punish him. But I’ll trouble you, General Fu, to make a trip personally and escort this man back to Crown Prince Yuan Tang of the State of Chen.”

And just in time to deliver the victory report from Quyang City along with him.

Two birds with one stone.

At his core, Xiao Heng was the kind of man who preferred to do good without demanding recognition. But in the political arena, that simply wouldn't do.

Goodwill shown to an ally must never be hidden away. Every action he took that might benefit Yuan Tang must be made clear to him.

The man blanched and shouted in panic, “You wouldn’t dare——”

Before he could finish, the old general struck him down with a precise chop of his hand, knocking him to the ground. He then took out a rope and bound the man’s arms behind his back.

Xiao Heng’s tone remained composed and cold. “One after another, they all assume that the State of Yan is on the brink of collapse, rushing over to trample us while they think they still can. Go back and tell your prince: in this battle, the State of Yan will emerge victorious!”

……

Pucheng.

After a fierce and bloody struggle, the Black Wind Cavalry and the Shadow Division finally succeeded in breaking through the south gate of the city.

The flag of Great Yan once again fluttered proudly over its rightful territory.

The soldiers of the Reserve Battalion were all overcome with excitement. Who said the Reserve Battalion couldn’t fight? Didn’t they just take down the south gate with their own hands?

Zhao Dengfeng collapsed onto the ground, panting heavily as he gasped, “Those sons of bitches from the Han Family, they can really take a beating…”

It was an indisputable fact that the Han Family’s warhorses were remarkably powerful.

Together with the men from the Shadow Division, they had fought with everything they had, be it life, strength, and spirit. They were driven by unwavering conviction and sheer will, they carved a bloody path through those relentless foes!

“I’m completely dead on my feet…” Zhao Dengfeng panted without stopping.

Li Shen leaned on his sword for support, gave him a frosty glare, and said between gasps, “That’s what you get for wasting your body drinking and whoring all day long.”

Zhao Dengfeng was clearly displeased. “Hey, hey, hey! That’s just plain slander! When have I ever been indulging in wine and women? Everything I did was for show, just a front! You’re so rigid and stubborn! So what if I acted like I was siding with the Han Family? I spent their money to get my own things done, and then stabbed them in the back, now that’s what I call satisfying!”

Back then, he and Li Shen had left the military around the same time. The Han Family had hoped to recruit them into the shadows, working secretly to reconnect with remnants of the Xuanyuan Family.

Li Shen had refused outright. He vowed never to betray the Xuanyuan Family and walked away without even pocketing a single coin.

Zhao Dengfeng, on the other hand, was far more tactful and smooth.

Wen Renchong cast a sharp glance at the two men and said sternly, “You two, enough quarreling. Han Ye has escaped. Besides, there are still twenty thousand Han Family troops in the city, most likely under the command of Fourth Master Han. Our mission is far from over.”

“I know.” Zhao Dengfeng replied with a grin. Having quickly recovered his strength, he swung back up onto his horse with renewed energy and roared, “You little bastards of the Han Family, Grandpa Zhao is coming for you!”

Li Shen frowned and muttered, “Can you stop imitating the young commander’s way of speaking?”

Zhao Dengfeng chuckled mischievously, “Come on, just once. It sounds so cool!”

Wen Renchong glanced around warily. “Wait a second… where’s the young commander?”

Li Shen answered, “He was just up on the tower a moment ago——”

The three of them looked up at once, but there was no longer any sign of Gu Jiao beside the flagpole.

They exchanged glances, and an unshakable sense of foreboding surged up in their hearts all at the same time.

Wen Renchong’s gaze turned cold. “This is bad! It’s a trap! Up to the tower, now!”

“Hehehehe… walked right into it, you’ve walked right into it…”

A clear, bell-like laughter rang from the top of the city tower. It was Yue Liuyi.

She hadn’t escaped at all. Instead, she had used a concealed mechanism to hide herself in a secret chamber within the tower.

And now, there was one more guest in that secret room.

Yue Liuyi lifted her head with a bright, innocent smile, looking toward Gu Jiao, who was precariously standing atop a pair of crossed wooden planks. Her voice was soft, almost playful, “So, you’re the commander of the Black Wind Cavalry? You look awfully young. But since you dared to hurt me, I suppose I’ll have to make you pay something in return!”

It had all started when Gu Jiao climbed to the top of the tower. After she planted Great Yan’s flag on the rooftop, she had unintentionally caught wind of some strange movement coming from below the roof.

She entered the room and freed a bound civilian, only to trigger the trap that led to her current predicament.

The floor beneath her feet had abruptly retracted, leaving only two narrow planks crossed in midair beneath her boots, barely holding her weight.

And she couldn’t jump out, climb up, or drop down, because surrounding her was a prison woven from snow silkworm threads.

Hundreds of those silvery threads stretched all around her, dense as a spiderweb. Even with her silver-thread gloves, she could never destroy that many strands in an instant.

If she forced her way through, the most likely outcome would be her entire body being sliced apart. Perhaps only her hands would remain intact.

Yue Liuyi giggled and said, “What’s the point of saving some lowly civilian’s worthless life? You generals of Great Yan are always too soft and sentimental!”

Gu Jiao replied calmly, “This isn’t sentimentality. But I suppose someone like you will never understand.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
