Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

In the tenth month, the first snow of the year fell upon Cangxue Pass.

As night descended, Feng Wuxiu, wrapped in a thick cloak, paced back and forth in the snow outside the tent entrance, both hands tucked tightly into a hand warmer.

From time to time, he glanced expectantly toward the camp’s main entrance.

His attendant, visibly worried, stepped forward and advised, “Family Head, the wind is strong out here. You should go into the tent and warm yourself by the fire.”

The cold at Cangxue Pass was biting. Even as they spoke, their breaths turned into white mist, and the wind whipping across their faces stung like needles.

Feng Wuxiu let out a sigh and said, “I’m not going in. I’m waiting for my eldest brother.”

The attendant quickly reassured him, “Eldest Master will be fine. Nothing bad will happen.”

Feng Wuxiu, however, was filled with regret. “If I had known this would happen, I wouldn’t have craved those lamb steam buns.”

His brother had spent three years traveling down the mountain before finally returning home, and it had taken him another three months just to find his way out of the woods.

Now, once again, he had gone missing along the journey, and no one could say when they would see him again. Who knew if it would be next year or even later.

The attendant gave an awkward chuckle. “It’s not really your fault... you just made a casual remark, and who would’ve thought the Eldest Master would sneak out in the middle of the night to buy you some buns?”

It was a long story. On their way, they had passed by a rather well-known local steam bun shop, so popular that everything would sell out right after it opened at dawn.

To ensure his younger brother could eat the buns he longed for, Taoist Qingfeng had gone to wait outside the shop in the middle of the night.

And then... there was no "then." He disappeared without a trace.

Feng Wuxiu bore the burden of diplomatic negotiations and could not remain behind to search.

He had no choice but to leave a few guards to continue the search while he himself proceeded to Cangxue Pass, accompanying His Highness the Eldest Imperial Grandson.

Still filled with remorse, Feng Wuxiu added, “Also, I really shouldn’t have switched assignments with Wang Xu. If I had gone to Chishui Pass instead, I never would’ve come across that steam bun shop. And if I hadn’t seen it, I wouldn’t have gotten that craving.”

The attendant tried to lighten the mood. “Well, Chishui Pass has crispy duck. Fried in butter, brushed with honey and sprinkled with sesame seeds. It smells absolutely divine!”

Feng Wuxiu couldn’t help but swallow his saliva. “What flavors do they have?”

The attendant: “…”

Elsewhere in the camp, a man as graceful as a celestial immortal sat formally on his knees in front of a low table.

Dressed in a cloak lined with silver fox fur, he lifted a slender, well-shaped hand, dipped his brush in ink, and began to write a letter.

Outside, two muffled groans could be heard, and the air grew thick with the warm, metallic scent of blood.

Not long after, Long Yi entered the tent, his sword freshly wiped clean with snow and frost.

“That was the thirteenth wave, wasn’t it?” Xiao Heng remarked with a tone as calm and effortless as drifting clouds. “The State of Jin really is relentless.”

News that the Eldest Imperial Grandson of Great Yan’s Imperial Family was heading east for peace talks had caused a stir, drawing intense attention from the State of Jin.

On the road, they had repeatedly sent assassins to ambush him, each attempt carried three underlying motives.

First, to sabotage the peace negotiations with the State of Chen.

Second, to damage the morale of the Yan army by orchestrating the death of the Eldest Imperial Grandson.

Third, to sever the possibility of using the State of Chen as a pawn to counter the State of Qing.

Long Yi sat cross-legged at his side.

Xiao Heng turned slightly and brushed the snowflakes off Long Yi’s shoulder.

Long Yi remained quiet and still, showing no resistance as his young master moved closer.

There were very few people in this world who could approach Shi Tian so closely.

It seemed as if memories related to Shi Tian were gradually awakening within Long Yi, as his eyes and the aura around him had begun to shift in subtle ways.

Xiao Heng felt that Long Yi was slowly slipping away from him, but he made no move to stop him from regaining his lost memories.

He asked, “Long Yi, the letter I had you deliver to the State of Chen’s military camp, did you manage to get it into that person’s hands?”

Long Yi nodded.

Though still unable to speak, Long Yi was no longer entirely disconnected from communication as he once had been.

Xiao Heng smiled in quiet relief. “Long Yi, it’s time for you to start learning how to read.”

......

At the break of dawn.

Beyond the gates of Cangxue Pass, in an open space at the junction between the two territories, the Yan army had set up a temporary tent.

To demonstrate sincerity, Xiao Heng arrived early and waited patiently inside the tent.

The letter he had Long Yi deliver had specified the meeting time as one quarter past the hour of chenshi(7-9 am).

However, it wasn’t until the hour of sishi(9-11 am) that the agreed-upon envoy finally showed up, leisurely and unhurried.

The man stepped into the tent wearing a purple sable cloak. His figure was tall and well-built, his skin a healthy wheat tone, and his features were rugged and striking, but what stood out most were the eyes that seemed to always carry a smile.

He was none other than Yuan Tang, once a hostage prince of the State of Zhao, now the Crown Prince of the State of Chen.

Yuan Tang entered the tent with a smile, unfastened his cloak, and casually tossed it to the eunuch who had accompanied him. His eyes landed on Xiao Liulang as he said, “Oh? I was wondering who it might be. So it’s Lord Xiao. It’s been a while, how have you been?”

Xiao Heng had already revealed his identity in the letter he sent.

Raising his hand slightly, Xiao Heng gestured for him to take a seat.

Yuan Tang knelt opposite Xiao Heng, sitting comfortably and narrowing his eyes in a leisurely manner. “Xiao Liulang, what’s going on here? Weren’t you from the State of Zhao? How did you end up as an envoy for the State of Yan? I heard the Eldest Imperial Grandson of the State of Yan is supposed to be here for peace talks with the State of Chen. So where is he?”

Besides the two of them, only Long Yi, one eunuch from each side, and two death warriors of the State of Chen were present in the tent.

Xiao Heng responded with composed calm, “I am the State of Yan’s Eldest Imperial Grandson.”

“…Huh?” Yuan Tang froze in surprise.

The eunuch beside Xiao Heng poured tea for Yuan Tang.

Yuan Tang raised a hand to dismiss him.

The eunuch bowed and stepped back behind Xiao Heng.

Yuan Tang stared hard at Xiao Heng, scanning him from head to toe for a long while. “Xiao Liulang, are you messing with me? You clearly are——”

Xiao Heng cut him off with unshaken composure. “My name is Xiao Heng. Xiao Liulang was a temporary alias. My father is Marquis Xuanping of the State of Zhao. My mother is Princess Xinyang. My birth mother is the Crown Princess of Great Yan.”

Yuan Tang’s mouth dropped open in disbelief.

There was simply too much information at once for him to process.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
