Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

After finishing the last segment of the orange, Gu Jiao said, "There’s one more thing I need to tell you. In fact, this is the main point I wanted to talk about."

Most people, faced with such a serious atmosphere, would instinctively create some distance.

However, Xiao Heng didn’t do that. Instead, he moved his chair closer to hers, positioning himself near her side, and looked at her delicate profile as he said, “Alright, I’m all ears.”

Gu Jiao glanced at him and said, "It’s not anything pleasant, so you don’t have to listen so intently."

Xiao Heng smiled lightly and replied, "Even so, I want to hear it."

Gu Jiao paused for a moment before asking, "Are you fully aware of the charges against the Xuanyuan Family back then?"

Xiao Heng nodded. "I read the Xuanyuan Family’s files in the library pavilion. They recorded dozens of grave crimes—collaborating with the State of Jin, betraying the country, ceding border cities, persecuting loyal officials, embezzling disaster relief funds, privately crafting dragon robes, and plotting rebellion... The Xuanyuan Family’s ‘sins’ are countless."

Gu Jiao said, "What I’m about to tell you is related to the Xuanyuan Family."

Xiao Heng looked at her gently, signaling her to continue without worry.

Gu Jiao’s expression turned serious as she said, "I want to clear the Xuanyuan Family’s name. I want to bring down the Emperor of Great Yan."

This wasn’t a decision she made after learning about Jing Yinyin’s lineage; it was a seed that had taken root in her heart a long time ago.

She turned to Xiao Heng and continued, “You don’t need to join. The Emperor of Great Yan has no intention of harming you. Even if your identity is exposed, you are still the true Eldest Imperial Grandson. He won’t hurt you, nor will he harm Shangguan Yan again. Your real enemies are only the Crown Prince and those coveting the throne.”

Those people were far easier to deal with than the Emperor himself; the Emperor was simply too powerful a foe.

Overthrowing his imperial power was something even the Xuanyuan Family, which once commanded an army of a million, failed to achieve.

For Gu Jiao to challenge him would be an almost insurmountable task.

It was a battle with nearly no chance of victory. Gu Jiao could go to her death alone, but she didn’t want to drag Xiao Heng down with her.

“Aren’t we already doing this together?” Xiao Heng grasped her hand and looked deeply into her slightly startled eyes. “Sending the little monk home was never just your wish alone.”

“Risking everything for the one you love isn’t a privilege reserved only for you.”

“Is it that you’re allowed to face life and death for me, but I’m not allowed to brave fire and water for you?”

By the end of his words, his gaze grew heavy, as if deeply hurt by her. “We are husband and wife. Do you really… want to leave me behind like this?”

Gu Jiao was utterly defenseless against his pleading, puppy-like eyes. She froze in her wheelchair, completely forgetting what she had intended to say next.

Xiao Heng let out a long, melancholic sigh. “Do you not have faith in me, or do you not have faith in our bond?”

Gu Jiao stammered, “Ah, I… this…”

Debate was not Gu Jiao’s strong suit; fighting was.

Even with ten mouths, she wouldn’t be able to out-argue Xiao Heng.

Gu Jiao fiddled with her fingers, trying to find the right words, “But he’s your grandfather.”

Xiao Heng replied, “The grandfather who slaughtered my grandmother’s entire clan.”

Well… He had a point.

Gu Jiao asked, “Are you really sure you won’t regret this?”

“I won’t.” Xiao Heng looked at her, gently squeezing her fingertips. “So, may I join you now, my esteemed commander?”

What kind of flirtatious tone was that? How did a serious conversation take such a strange turn toward the end?

Gu Jiao glanced at his large hands, her eyes darting around. “I’ll have to think it over carefully and assess your qualifications as an ally.”

“And me as well.”

Shangguan Yan suddenly entered the room, leaning on her cane.

Xiao Heng, who had been planning to use his charm to win Gu Jiao over, was so startled by Shangguan Yan’s sudden appearance that he sprang out of his chair.

“Mother! When did you get here? How did you make no sound at all?”

“You didn’t hear me? I thought you knew I was here since you didn’t make further moves.” Shangguan Yan muttered under her breath. She approached the two, looked down at Gu Jiao, and declared, “I want to join as well.”

Gu Jiao turned to her. “Are you certain?”

Shangguan Yan gazed at the blue sky outside the window. “I’ve never been more certain. Fifteen years ago, I didn’t have the courage I have now. Losing the Xuanyuan Family, my mother, and my position as Crown Princess left me like a bird stripped of its feathers, devoid of the will to fly again. All I wanted was for my two children to live well. But after meeting you, I realized I was wrong—so terribly wrong.”

“It’s not enough for someone to simply survive. They must live openly and with dignity, without hiding in the shadows, without borrowing someone else’s identity to exist.”

“I failed once, but I hope it’s not too late for me to make amends.”

Even if it meant discarding her pride and shattering her unyielding spirit, she would complete the task she lacked the courage to face fifteen years ago.

“You’re really incredible, girl.” Shangguan Yan said to Gu Jiao.

“I know.” Gu Jiao replied.

The corner of Shangguan Yan’s lips twitched.

I’ve always been rather narcissistic, but I didn’t expect this girl to be even more so... At such a touching moment, with such heartfelt words, I almost shed tears, but she made me swallow them back down.

Was this how her uncles felt in the past?

It was true that the way of heaven was cyclical, and the Heavens showed mercy to no one.

Shangguan Yan glanced at the two of them, saying, “Do you have a plan? I suggest starting with military power. Fifty thousand Black Wind Cavalry horses won’t be enough.”

Gu Jiao responded, “The fifty thousand Black Wind Cavalry horses are just the beginning. I will reclaim all of the Xuanyuan Family’s military power.”

Even as she leaned on a cane, Shangguan Yan exuded an undeniable aura of imperial nobility.

She nodded decisively, exuding an air of authority, “Very well, I’ll be watching closely. You can proceed with your plans, and I’ll handle my preparations.”

Xiao Heng asked, “Mother, what do you intend to do?”

Shangguan Yan gripped her cane tightly, her gaze turning cold, “Reclaim the position of Crown Princess!”

......

That night, the family shared a meal in Shangguan Yan’s room. Afterward, Little Jing Kong nestled in Gu Jiao’s arms for a while before running off to the courtyard to play with Little Eleven.

Yu He brought over a freshly prepared bowl of medicinal soup for Gu Jiao.

Gu Jiao looked at the soup, lost in thought.

“What’s on your mind?” Xiao Heng asked.

Gu Jiao frowned slightly and said, “I suddenly have a question.”

Xiao Heng raised an eyebrow in curiosity, “What question?”

Gu Jiao replied, “The Imperial Advisor’s Hall provides medical treatment for all participants in the selection process. Fifth Master Han was seriously injured—why wasn’t he sent to the Imperial Advisor’s Hall for treatment?”

“He was taken directly back by the Han Family… Was his injury that severe?” Xiao Heng was unaware of the specifics, as the Han Family had not disclosed Fifth Master Han’s condition. He had assumed it was only a minor injury.

Gu Jiao recalled, “I was the one who injured him. At the time, he didn’t even have the strength to stand. With injuries that severe, wouldn’t it have been safer to treat him at the Imperial Advisor’s Hall?”

Xiao Heng furrowed his brows. “If that’s the case, then something about this situation doesn’t add up.”

Gu Jiao touched her chin thoughtfully. “There must be a secret… hidden in Han Ci’s situation!”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
