Chapter 958: Waiting for You
Editor: EndlessFantasy Translation
The thunderstorm had finally subsided, though the sun had yet to make an appearance, the air felt fresh and the weather was decent enough.
Deciding to make the most of the day, Gu Zi resolved to visit the Daqing Pig Farm in the countryside, bringing some food to Su Shen and, of course, to see him herself. She had already informed him of her plans over the phone.
She entrusted her three children to Su Jing, who was more than happy to take charge.
With a confident pat on her chest, Su Jing assured Gu Zi, “Sister-in-law, you go ahead and spend some time with my brother. Leave everything here to me!”
Gu Zi rolled her eyes but smiled, handing over a crisp hundred-yuan note. “Stop teasing me. Take this, and if you need anything for the house, go ahead and buy it. But make sure to look after Lele.”
Su Jing, though in her thirties, had never experienced such care from anyone before, especially not from someone younger. Surprised by the gesture, she accepted the money, a broad smile on her face as she sent Gu Zi off. “Sister-in-law, please take care! I’ll make sure to take good care of the kids!”
With a final wave, Gu Zi stepped out, leaving Su Jing behind.
As she walked down the familiar street, she reflected on the unexpected closeness she now shared with Su Jing. Perhaps it was true, she thought—when you are with the right people, everything falls into place. Even a rocky start can bloom into something meaningful. Su Shen was that right person for her.
Since the Su family moved to the city, it had been a long time since Gu Zi had visited the pig farm. As she arrived just in time for lunch, she was greeted by a group of farm wives bringing meals to the workers. The moment they saw her, they approached enthusiastically, calling out greetings, their faces lighting up with warmth.
As she walked with them, chatting as they went, one of the women called out teasingly, “Don’t you think you should hurry and find your husband? He’s expecting you.”
The playful tone was unmistakable, and Gu Zi blushed slightly, quickening her pace toward the office. The women exchanged knowing looks as they watched her retreat, their admiration unmistakable.
“Look at our boss’s wife, so young and beautiful. I’d fall for her myself if I were a man!” one of the women said, her voice filled with admiration.
“It’s clear the boss and his wife’s relationship is stronger than ever. To come all the way from the city just to see him—so enviable!” another added with a sigh.
Not long ago, there were whispers about Gu Zi from the village, but now, all anyone could do was admire and respect her. Even the pig farm workers, once skeptical, now regarded her with fondness and awe. Any lingering resentment was carefully kept to themselves.
Arriving at the office, Gu Zi found not only Su Shen but also Lin Cheng and Li Hua. As she walked in, she greeted them with a smile. “Hello, Sister-in-law, Brother.”
Seeing her, Lin Cheng and his wife exchanged glances, but neither appeared surprised. They greeted her warmly. “Gu Zi, you’re here. We’ve been waiting for you. Su Shen has something to discuss with us, but we needed you here first.”
Gu Zi made her way to Su Shen, who stood to pull her onto the sofa beside him. He leaned in slightly and spoke softly, “Do you remember when I mentioned there was someone I had in mind for something?”
Though it had been a week since they last discussed it, Gu Zi had been paying close attention and remembered clearly. “So, you mean the person you have in mind is my brother?”
Su Shen nodded, then turned to Lin Cheng and Li Hua. “Jin Long is leaving, and someone needs to take his place. After much thought, I’ve decided to offer Lin Cheng the position. What do you think?”
The statement left Lin Cheng stunned. He hadn’t expected Su Shen to offer him such a significant responsibility. He stammered, looking over at his wife, unsure of how to respond.
Li Hua, ever practical, raised a concern. “Su Shen, I’ve heard Lin Cheng say before that Jin Long was in charge of business operations. Do you really think Lin Cheng, with his honest and simple nature, can handle these negotiations? He may not get taken advantage of personally, but what if the business suffers because of it?”
Su Shen was undeterred. “Sister-in-law, honesty is an asset. In fact, it makes him more reliable. Clients trust people who seem grounded. Besides, Lin Cheng is more than capable. With a little guidance from me, I’m confident he won’t be easily deceived. This will be a great opportunity for him to grow.”
He turned his gaze back to Lin Cheng. “Let’s not beat around the bush. Lin Cheng, you’re the youngest man from Gu Zi’s family. I want you to step up, to become stronger. I believe you understand what I mean.”
