Chapter 1108: Competing

Ever since Gu Jin had seen Gu Yang’s martial arts, she began watching from the sidelines whenever Gu Yang trained Feng Jue. Each time, she’d casually observe, pretending to look at the sky as if she were just idly watching.

Gu Yang found it amusing. If she wanted to learn, why act shy about it?

Understanding her sister’s tsundere nature, Gu Yang took the initiative to ask, “Sister, do you want to practice with us?”

“Alright,” Gu Jin responded smoothly, acting as if it was no big deal.

Feng Jue glared at Gu Jin, his eyes sharp like a wolf pup protecting its territory from a rival.

Gu Jin, however, quickly realized that her little sister was a treasure trove of knowledge. She knew far more than what could be found in textbooks, so Gu Jin often brought her books to Gu Yang for extra lessons.

Gu Yang became Gu Jin’s teacher. Naturally gentle and patient, she adjusted her teaching style to fit Gu Jin’s understanding, answering questions and expanding beyond the textbooks to introduce additional knowledge. She even entertained Gu Jin’s more creative, off-topic questions.

Gu Yang soon noticed that Gu Jin had a natural inclination towards the sciences, showing particular interest in those subjects. So, she focused on nurturing that passion while also teaching her a bit of history and geography to give her a well-rounded education.

It was a comprehensive development!

Feng Jue noticed that Gu Yang was giving Gu Jin special lessons and he felt a little jealous.

So, he specifically went to the classroom and found an old, worn textbook. Waving it around, he asked Gu Yang about the incomplete sections in the back, using the excuse of studying to pester her.

Gu Yang quickly realized—she had discovered another genius!

Deciding to nurture both of these bright minds, she brought Gu Jin and Feng Jue together for joint study sessions.

When Gu Jin noticed the presence of an additional, annoying person in what had been her quiet study space with Gu Yang, her little brows furrowed in frustration.

But she was a mature child. She couldn’t lower herself to the level of these childish kids. As the older sister, she had to set an example.

So, she begrudgingly tolerated Feng Jue’s intrusion.

The two of them didn’t like each other at all. Outwardly, they looked down on each other, while secretly, they competed.

Time passed peacefully, and before they knew it, winter had arrived.

The children at the orphanage were still wearing thin clothes. Huahua and Duoduo, who used to play outside, no longer ventured out. Instead, they huddled together in their dormitory, wrapped in blankets, playing with ropes and stones.

Though called blankets, they were barely thick enough. Most were old, thin, and some even torn.

Gu Jin had moved into Gu Yang’s dormitory to continue her studies.

Concerned, Gu Yang approached Director Li of the orphanage, asking him to take care of the children’s winter clothing.

The children were still wearing old clothes donated by kind people, but there were hardly any winter clothes available, and not every child had something warm to wear.

Although the orphanage should have received donations from generous benefactors and funding from the government, Gu Yang had noticed during her months there that nothing new had been purchased. Something was off.

The food in the canteen was bland and clearly inexpensive.

It wasn’t hard to figure out where the rest of the funds had gone.

Inside his office, Director Li lounged comfortably, wrapped in a thick cotton jacket, warming himself by an electric heater while lazily munching on melon seeds and watching TV.

Suddenly, a cold gust blew through the room. He turned to see the door ajar and a little kid standing there.

Director Li waved dismissively. “Shoo, shoo. Don’t run around.”

Gu Yang, with her small but serious expression, spoke in a soft but firm voice. “Director, it’s cold and none of the children have proper clothes. Shouldn’t the orphanage buy some for them? Even if we can’t get cotton jackets, at least sweaters.”

The cold wind swept in again. Director Li frowned, pushing Gu Yang toward the door. “Sweaters? It’s enough that you get food and shelter! Now, go back and hide under your blanket,” he grumbled, closing the door behind her.
