Chapter 1447: Up to No Good

Qiao Wei and Shao Yunduan had amassed considerable wealth. However, Qiao Wei’s aim wasn’t merely to accumulate riches; she harbored a desire to take Qiao Xuan’s possessions.

This time, she had received a substantial sum of silver from someone, enough to provide two hundred taels. Nevertheless, she believed it was necessary to negotiate a lower price.

“Two hundred taels?” Qiao Wei sneered and cast an incredulous look at Mrs. Mao. “You’re just a girl. Do you genuinely believe she’s worth two hundred taels? Do you think Madame Shao is so easily deceived?”

Both Mrs. Mao and Mianmian were left bewildered.

Mrs. Mao’s eyes widened, and she stammered, “Miss, what do you mean?”

“I mean that Madame Shao is reneging on her agreement!”

“What?”

“That’s inconceivable…”

Though Mianmian’s voice was barely audible, Qiao Wei managed to catch her words. Feeling uneasy, she scoffed at her and retorted, “Why not?”

Under the weight of her piercing gaze, Mianmian involuntarily shrank. Despite her firm stance, she reluctantly replied. Lowering her gaze, she whispered apprehensively, “Madame Shao doesn’t seem like someone who would go back on her word…”

Qiao Wei, seething with anger, snapped, “What do you know? Who do you think you are? How long have you known Madame Shao? Do you understand her character? Do you possess the authority to determine her actions?”

“Unbelievable!”

“Don’t be upset, don’t be upset!” Mrs. Mao was taken aback by Qiao Wei’s sudden rage. She pinched Mianmian and urged her to kneel. “What are you saying? Hurry and apologize to Miss!”

Mianmian, terrified by Qiao Wei’s sudden outburst, had tears in her eyes. She dared not speak, let alone cry, and knelt in a pitiable and forlorn manner.

“Miss, please, refrain from getting upset. This girl is unable to speak; please, don’t be angry. Madame Shao’s conduct is quite deplorable! How could she act so unethically…”

Qiao Wei let out a cold snort. Having vented most of her frustration, she was starting to regain her composure.

With a disdainful snort, Qiao Wei turned to Ms. Mao and remarked, “Madame Shao’s untrustworthiness is hardly surprising. She may seem genteel, but I believe this girl is of good character. Since you’re here, how about I employ her?”

Ms. Mao was delighted and nodded, saying, “Alright! Thank you, Miss! Just give me the 200 taels of silver, and this girl will accompany you!”

“Two hundred taels?” Qiao Wei found it amusing. “Money doesn’t grow on trees. Look at this girl; is she worth two hundred taels? I only have twenty taels on hand. If that doesn’t suffice, then take her away!”

“What?…”

Had it not been for Qiao Xuan’s initial offer, Ms. Mao might have agreed to the proposal; after all, it was a substantial sum.

However, Qiao Xuan had initially promised 200 taels, and now that figure had dwindled to a mere 20 taels, which was unacceptable.

“This is far too little… Miss, could you add a bit more? Just a tad, please…”

Ms. Mao tried to negotiate, a hopeful smile on her face.

Mianmian was taken aback, clutching Ms. Mao’s hand and beseeching in a tearful tone, “Auntie, Auntie, I don’t want to go anywhere! I don’t want to leave! Please!”

Qiao Wei was strikingly attractive, but her temperament was far from pleasant. She regarded Ms. Mao with a disdainful gaze that cut like a knife.

Instinctively, Ms. Mao felt a sense of trepidation.

If she allowed Mianmian to accompany Qiao Wei, perhaps Mianmian should just stay with her uncle and aunt.
