Chapter 2707: A Bracelet

Chapter 2707: A Bracelet

After finally recovering slightly and wiping his mouth clean with the back of his sleeve, Lou Weizhe looked up at Yu Qi and Long Hui. He was astounded to discover that both of them still appeared perfectly calm, steady, and entirely unaffected by the gruesome, maggot-infested sight before them. At that exact moment, Lou Weizhe seriously began doubting his own spiritual strength and mental resolve.

"Did you two seriously not smell anything? How can both of you remain so completely calm in front of something as horrific as this?" Lou Weizhe asked weakly, his voice trembling slightly while his face remained incredibly pale.

"I am a doctor. I have seen many gruesome and stomach-churning things like this before during my years of medical training and hospital work." Yu Qi stated calmly, her expression remaining entirely analytical and composed as she looked at the body.

"I am a soldier. I have also seen scenes far worse than this on the battlefield." Long Hui added flatly, his dark eyes cold, sharp, and distant as he stared down at the rotting corpse inside the coffin without flinching.

"I see..." Lou Weizhe nodded awkwardly, a cold sweat breaking out on his forehead as he immediately understood the enormous difference in life experience between himself and the two literal monsters standing beside him.

Meanwhile, Yu Qi stepped a bit closer and carefully examined the corpse inside the coffin once again, ignoring the stench. Judging from the advanced condition of the body’s hidden tissues and bone structure, the woman had clearly been dead for a very long time already. However, the visible decay process itself seemed to have only started recently.

This coffin had most likely been specially modified with dark spiritual arrays or hidden mechanical components to function like a high-tech refrigerator, preserving the corpse and preventing the body from decomposing for months or perhaps even years. At some point recently, however, likely around the time of his death, the coffin probably lost its spiritual or physical power source and could no longer maintain the freezing temperature required to preserve the corpse properly.

Since the rapid decomposition process had only begun recently after the power source failed, it also perfectly explained why the police officers investigating the property earlier had never noticed any strange smell and had therefore completely failed to discover this hidden underground chamber during their initial sweep.

Suddenly, while carefully scanning the decaying body for any other clues, Yu Qi noticed something metallic shining faintly through the thick grime on the dead woman’s left wrist.

"Mr Lou, can you come over here and take a close look at this?" Yu Qi called out toward Lou Weizhe, her eyes narrowing slightly as she focused on the object.

Lou Weizhe immediately pinched his nose tightly with his fingers to block out the horrifying odour before cautiously stepping closer to the side of the open coffin. He lowered his gaze toward the specific, dirty object Yu Qi was pointing at.

It was an intricately crafted bracelet covered in ancient markings.

The moment Lou Weizhe clearly saw the bracelet’s unique design, his expression changed dramatically, and his eyes widened in instant recognition. Without caring in the slightest about the wriggling maggots surrounding the dead flesh, Lou Weizhe immediately reached forward with slightly trembling hands and carefully pried the bracelet away from the dead woman’s cold, stiff wrist. He then raised it closer to the night pearl’s soft glow to inspect the hidden carvings carefully.

"It is the anchor my master mentioned before!" Lou Weizhe exclaimed in complete shock, his voice echoing loudly throughout the damp underground chamber.

"So, we finally found it." Yu Qi let out a small, quiet sigh of relief, glad that their trip had not been in vain.

"Yes. With this specific bracelet, I believe the soul-summoning ritual for the girl will become much easier and far more accurate." Lou Weizhe nodded seriously, cradling the artifact.

"I hope so, too." Yu Qi nodded in quiet agreement.

"By the way, what should we do with this corpse now?" Lou Weizhe suddenly asked, looking back toward the disturbing coffin with a frown.

"Ma Chunwei probably got involved in dark magic and taboo rituals in the first place because of this woman. Most likely, he wanted to find a way to revive her somehow. Since Ma Chunwei is already dead now, this woman should at least receive a proper burial to let her rest." Yu Qi paused briefly to organise her thoughts before continuing, "Let’s report this discovery to the local police. However, you should be the one to make the official report."

"Eh? Why me?" Lou Weizhe asked, blinking in complete confusion.

"Because it would be much easier to explain to them logically. You are Chang Shunchun’s direct family member. You can tell the police that you wanted to investigate the site further to learn more about what she experienced while she was missing. That is your excuse for coming here today. While exploring the property out of grief or curiosity, you accidentally discovered this hidden room and found the hidden corpse. After that, we can simply step back and let the police handle the rest of the matter legally." Yu Qi calmly constructed the seamless cover story.

"I see. I understand your reasoning now. Then let’s do exactly as you suggest." Lou Weizhe nodded in full agreement, admiring her quick wit.

After finalising their cover story, the three of them finally left the dark underground chamber and exited the dilapidated house altogether. By the time they stepped outside into the fresh air, the sky had already begun turning dark, painted in shades of deep purple and black.

Lou Weizhe subconsciously turned around and looked back toward the old, decaying house.
